My dear fashionistas, welcome to a new fashion story on Mr.M’s blog. Today I am taking you to one of the most famous places in the world known as the Roman Spanish Steps, where I decided to present an outfit where French watchmaking tradition and Italian craftsmanship meet. The new Briston Streamliner Kennedy watch shines on my wrist, and the rest of the collection is made up of pieces that have been taking pride of place in my wardrobe for years.
Rome is a city that allows you to be who you really are. No need to pretend or force. It is this freedom that makes it the perfect catwalk that exudes elegance, effortlessly and without the need to prove yourself. An early morning in Piazza di Spagna, before the tourists arrive, offers a rare privilege, the steps just for you and your thoughts.
BRISTON: WHEN A FRENCH IMAGINE BRITISH CHIC
The story of the Briston brand begins in 2013 in Paris, when Bris Jaune decided to start his own watch house. This was not unexpected, Jaune had previously spent fifteen years working in the most famous houses of the world’s watchmaking industry. He started his career in the Richemont group, then worked for Cartier, then for Beaume and Mercier and Raymond Weil, and ended up as vice president for international marketing at Zenit, which belongs to the LVMH group.
The entrepreneurial spirit was not alien to him even in the family line. His grandfather, Jacques Jaune, founded the famous French brand Newmen in 1967, which certainly left a deep mark on the young Brice. With such a rich heritage and experience, it was only a matter of time before he started his own project. The result was Briston, a brand that combines French sophistication with British sporty chic.
BRISTON: A NAME WITH MEANING AND A MATERIAL WITH CHARACTER
The very name Briston was created as a tribute to the British spirit of that famous Oxford style that combines elegance and casualness, which was adopted in America in the 1950s by students of Ivy League universities. Among the most famous representatives of that style was John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the man whose name today bears the collection I will tell you about. Kennedy was one of the most elegant American presidents in history, known for discreet but sophisticated accessories and a wardrobe that combined casualness and sophistication.
What immediately set Briston apart from other brands was the use of acetate resin for making watch cases. This material is traditionally used in the production of luxury glasses, and Briston was the first to apply it to watches. Acetate for Briston watches is produced by the Italian house Mazucelli, a family business with six generations of experience in processing this precious material. Each case requires manual polishing, which gives each watch its unique character. The tortoiseshell acetate finish is reminiscent of the luxury glasses of past centuries, when real tortoiseshell was a material reserved for the wealthiest.
Since its inception, Briston has experienced remarkable growth. Today, the brand is present in more than fifty countries of the world, with almost a thousand points of sale. In 2018, the first Briston boutique store was opened in the Marais district of Paris, at 24 Rue de Poitou. That step confirmed that a relatively young watch brand can fight for its place in an extremely competitive market.
STREAMLINER KENNEDY: A WATCH INSPIRED BY THE AR DECO ERA
The Streamliner Kennedy collection represents the latest chapter in the story of the Briston brand. The inspiration comes from the American streamlined design movement of the 1930s, which made modern design its trademark. This movement has influenced everything from architecture and automobiles to trains and everyday objects. The name “Streamliner” recalls the famous American trains of that period that conquered the continent with their aerodynamic elegance. Geometric shapes, symmetry and subtle contrasts between straight and curved lines form the basis of the Art Deco aesthetic that permeates this collection.
The name Kennedy itself is not accidental. John F. Kennedy was a symbol of American elegant style of the mid-twentieth century, a mixture of casualness and refinement, without overstatement and without the need to prove it. Briston has incorporated this very philosophy into the design of this collection, creating a watch that is modern but with clear roots in classic watchmaking.
The model I’m wearing, the Streamliner Kennedy Auto, has a 36mm x 36mm square case made of brushed stainless steel with tortoiseshell acetate side panels. At the top of the case, at the twelve o’clock position, there is a crown decorated with a lapis lazuli cabochon, which adds a touch of sophistication to the entire watch. The dial is double-layered, with hollowed-out Roman and Arabic numerals on the upper layer and a delicate guilloche decoration in the central part.
BRISTON STREAMLINER KENNEDY: MECHANISM AND DETAILS THAT MAKE THE DIFFERENCE
At the heart of this Briston Streamliner Kennedy watch is the Japanese Miyota 9039 automatic movement, known for its reliability and slim profile. The hands are Dauphin-style, brushed steel with superlumina inserts that allow legibility in the dark. The seconds hand is made of blued steel, an elegant detail that is only noticeable upon closer inspection. The back of the case is transparent, so you can see through it the oscillating mass decorated with the brand crest.
The watch is water-resistant up to fifty meters and equipped with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. For everyday wear, this is the perfect combination of precision and durability. For this occasion, I chose a dark brown leather bracelet with a croco texture, which perfectly complements the warm color palette of my edition and gives the watch an even more classic character than the standard strap version.
HERNO: WHERE LAKE MAGGIORE BECOME FASHION
The jacket I’m wearing under the Spanish Steps comes from one of Italy’s most respected outerwear brands Herno. This family company was founded in 1948 in Leza, on the shores of Lake Maggiore in the province of Piedmont. The name of the brand comes from the river Erno, which flows past the factory and flows into the lake.
The story of Hearn begins immediately after the Second World War. Giuseppe Marenzi and his wife Alessandra Diana recognized the potential in the production of raincoats from cotton treated with castor oil. It is interesting that this oil was originally used as fuel in military aircraft, and the raw materials came from abandoned aircraft left after the war. From that humble starting point, Marenzi has built a company that today generates an annual revenue of around 184 million euros.
HERNO HISTORY FROM RAINCOAT TO WORLD SYMBOL OF ELEGANCE
In the 1950s, Herno expanded production into cashmere coats and a women’s collection. In the 1960s, international expansion began with the opening of stores in Osaka and Tokyo in 1968. During the 1980s, the company entered the North American market and began producing outerwear for some of the world’s biggest fashion houses, including Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton and Burberry.
Special attention is paid to ethical standards. Feathers for down jackets come exclusively from two sources: Siberia and Italy’s Lomelina Valley, with a strict ban on plucking feathers from live birds. Lomelina was chosen as a tribute to the origins of Alessandra Diana, wife of the founder and mother of Claudio. The company is open and in terms of production, the nylon coats are sewn in Romania, in plants directly controlled by Herno, while the final quality control always goes through Italian hands.
OUTFIT
Jacket: Herno
Watch: Briston
Turtleneck: Giorgio Armani
Trousers: Giorgio Armani
Sneakers: Fratelli Rossetti
Claudio Marenzi, the founder’s son, took over the management of the company in 2007 and brought a new vision without disrupting the brand’s identity. Under his leadership, the factory in Leza was renovated and became energy self-sufficient thanks to photovoltaic systems. All buildings in Leza are perfectly integrated into the surrounding landscape, in accordance with Marenci’s philosophy of respect for nature. For his contribution to Italian industry, Claudio was awarded the title of Knight of Labor by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in 2016. He was also president of Sistema Moda Italia from 2013 to 2018, and president of Confindustria Moda from 2017, an alliance he himself initiated to protect the values of Italian fashion craftsmanship on the world market.
HERNO: A JACKET THAT DOESN’T FEEL ON THE BODY
The LA GIACCA Herno jacket I’m wearing in today’s edition is a perfect example of what this brand does best – light, warm and stylish outerwear that is almost invisible. The model in beige with a slight sheen has a structure similar to a classic jacket, with lapels and buttons that give it a more formal character than a typical feather jacket. At the same time, the zipper under the fastening provides additional protection against the wind. The detailed photographs clearly show the quality of the quilting and the evenness of the filling, which are signs of superior craftsmanship.
Herno uses ultrasonic quilting on certain models, a technique that prevents feathers from penetrating the fabric. The nylon they use for the upper surface has a special finish that gives it a discreet shine, but doesn’t look too sporty or pretentious. It is precisely this middle ground between elegance and practicality that makes Herno jackets so sought after. The brand has also developed its own Herno Globe label under the slogan “Take care of your future”, which includes all sustainability projects from recycled nylon to low-emission production processes.
It is this ability to wear a feather jacket with wide elegant trousers and a cashmere roll, without losing sophistication, that makes Herno a special brand. The jacket looks just as good on the steps outside the Trinita dei Monti church as it does on a morning walk along the Tiber. That versatility is what the traveling man really looks for in his wardrobe.
GIORGIO ARMANI: SKILLS WITH A STORY IN EVERY SEAM
Underneath the Herno jacket, I felt an indescribable softness on my skin, a cashmere roll from the latest Giorgio Armani collection with embossed handwork. This piece deserves special attention because it illustrates what Armani has advocated throughout his life. The surface of the roll has a subtle wavy texture that catches the light in a unique way, creating a visual depth that is noticeable even in photographs.
Armani once said that he was the first to soften the image of the man in fashion. That philosophy is clearly read in this roll, the softness of the cashmere, the high collar that protects against the morning Roman wind and the embossed treatment that gives character to an otherwise simple piece. The beige tone fits perfectly with the palette of the rest of the edition, from the lighter Herno jacket to the darker trousers. The embossed work on the surface of the roll resembles waves or wavy lines, which gives a three-dimensional effect that is especially beautiful in detailed photographs.
Cashmere as a material has one amazing feature, it gets softer with each wear, provided it is properly maintained. A real cashmere turtleneck is not a one-season piece. It’s an investment that pays back through years of comfort and elegance. A high collar, especially in such delicate processing, requires tailoring precision that can only be gained through many years of experience. Armani has perfected this precision over five decades of working in the fashion industry.
Wide trousers from the same Giorgio Armani collection represent a contemporary interpretation of the classic cut. The waist is with an elastic band, which provides comfort during long walks, while the deep pleats give an elegant proportion to the entire silhouette. The material has a slight sheen that reacts well to Roman light, especially in the early morning hours when we were shooting on the Spanish Steps.
FRATELLI ROSSETTI: A STEP THAT ECHOES THROUGH THE CENTURIES
For footwear, I again chose proven sneakers from the brand Fratelli Rossetti, whose story begins in 1953 in Parabiago near Milan. Founder Renzo Rossetti began his career making athletic footwear for ice skating, before moving on to elegant leather footwear. Together with his wife Lizeta, he devoted his entire life to the shoemaking trade. Today, the company is managed by their sons Diego, Dario and Luka, who have maintained the family tradition of quality and innovation.
It is interesting that throughout history the greatest creators of the fashion world have collaborated with Fratelli Rossetti. Young Giorgio Armani designed a line of shoes called “Yacht” for them, while Valentino, Pierre Cardin and Yves Saint Laurent were also on the list of collaborators. That fact speaks volumes for the reputation that the Rossetti brothers enjoyed in the world of fashion.
The model I am wearing perfectly illustrates the philosophy of this brand. The upper combines grained leather and tumbled material in beige and brown tones, while the white sole provides comfort for walking on Roman cobblestones and travertine steps. Each shoe is made from start to finish in the factory in Parabiago, using techniques passed down from generation to generation. For the company’s fiftieth birthday in 2003, the Italian Post Office issued a commemorative postage stamp, a recognition that speaks of the cultural significance of this brand for all of Italy.
THE SPANISH STEPS: AN OPEN-AIR THEATER
Now let me tell you about the place where this fashion story was born. The Spanish Steps are a monumental staircase that connects the Piazza di Spagna at the bottom with the Trinita dei Monti church at the top. They were built between 1723 and 1726 according to the project of the Italian architect Francesco de Sanctis, and were financed by the French diplomat Etienne Geffe.
The staircase has one hundred and thirty-five steps arranged in twelve levels. At the very bottom, in front of the stairs, there is the Barcaca fountain, the work of Pietro Bernini, the father of the famous sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The fountain is made in the shape of a sunken ship and fed with water from the ancient Aqua Virgo aqueduct, the same one that feeds the Trevi Fountain.
LITERARY HERITAGE AND FASHION HISTORY
This place has an extremely rich cultural heritage. In the house next to the stairs, at number twenty-six, the English poet John Keats lived and died in 1821. Today, that building has been turned into a museum dedicated to Keats and Shelley. Not far from there, on the corner of Via Condotti, is the famous Antico Kaffe Greco, opened in 1760, where Goethe, Byron, Liszt and Stendhal sat. That cafe is one of the oldest still operating in the world, a real gem of the Roman cultural scene.
At the top of the steps, in front of the Trinita dei Monti church, stands the Egyptian obelisk of Salaria dating from the second century AD. The church itself, with its characteristic two bell-ring domes, was built in the sixteenth century on the initiative of the French king Charles VIII. It is this French connection that explains why the square at the foot is called Piazza di Spagna, the name comes from the former Spanish legation that was located there.
For the fashion world, the Spanish Steps have a special meaning because they are located in the very heart of the Roman fashion triangle. Via Condotti, Via Borgonona and Via Fratina surround the stairs from all sides, and in these streets there are boutiques of the world’s most famous fashion houses. To shoot a fashion editorial in this place means to pay tribute to that tradition and that unbreakable relationship between Rome and fashion. Audrey Hepburn ate ice cream on these steps in the movie “Roman Holiday” from 1953, and that scene has forever associated this place with the world of elegance and movie magic.
HOW I COMBINED FOUR BRANDS IN ONE FASHION STORY?
Now let’s look at the whole combination from a style perspective. Four brands from three countries: France, Italy and Italy again, create a coherent whole thanks to a carefully selected color palette. Herno jacket in light beige with shine is the brightest element. An Armani cashmere roll in a cream tone with an embossed texture adds warmth and visual interest. Pants in a darker beige color with a slight purple undertone create a contrast without drama.
The Fratelli Rossetti sneaker in a combination of grained leather and tumbled leather connects the lower part of the edition with the upper part. On hand, the Briston Streamliner Kennedy with its square brushed steel case and tortoiseshell acetate sides adds the finishing touch that takes the whole combination to the next level. The watch’s dark brown croco bracelet creates a subtle contrast with the rest of the palette, drawing the eye without being overpowering.
BRISTON WATCH AS AN EXPRESSION OF PERSONAL STYLE
In a world where smart watches have become everyday, a mechanical wristwatch is a conscious choice. The Briston Streamliner Kennedy is not just a timepiece, it’s a statement of values. The square shape reminiscent of the Art Deco period, the acetate that comes from the world of luxury glasses and the automatic mechanism that lives by the movement of your hand all speak of a man who appreciates tradition, but does not shy away from innovation.
Brice Jaune has created a brand that is both affordable and unique. Priced at around eight hundred and fifty euros for the automatic model, the Briston Streamliner Kennedy offers quality and design that surpasses its price category. Sapphire crystal, a Japanese automatic movement, hand-polished acetate from the house of Matsukeli and a double-layer guilloche dial are elements you’d expect on a watch twice the price.
What particularly attracted me to this watch is the ability to quickly change bracelets thanks to the spring system. We offer leather bracelets, nato straps, steel bracelets, silicone straps and imitation crocodile leather bracelets. That versatility means that one watch can accompany completely different styles from casual summer with a nato strap to formal winter with a dark leather bracelet, just like I chose for this Rome shoot.
THE PHILOSOPHY OF FUNCTIONAL FASHION LUXURY
Each of these four brands Briston, Herno, Giorgio Armani and Fratelli Rossetti share a common philosophy. It’s the idea that luxury doesn’t have to be flashy to be noticed. Herno jacket that does not feel on the body, and warms like the heaviest winter clothing. Armani roll, the texture of which is revealed only at a closer look. Fratelli Rossetti sneakers that look elegant even on Roman cobblestones. A Briston watch that draws attention with its shape, not its logo.
This philosophy particularly resonates with men who have reached maturity in style. We no longer seek the approval of others through what we wear. We look for quality that feels on the skin, design that ages beautifully and brands that have a story worth telling. These are the brands I choose for my blog, because I believe my readers share the same philosophy.
COULD THIS FASHION STORY FROM ROME BE DIFFERENT?
My dear readers, I hope this story from Rome’s Spanish Steps has brought you new inspiration and new knowledge about the brands behind this edition. The Briston Streamliner Kennedy watch men’s fashion in Rome, combined with the Herno jacket, Giorgio Armani roll top and Fratelli Rossetti sneakers, creates an ensemble where French charm and Italian craftsmanship meet.

This post is sponsored by Giorgio Armani, Herno, Briston and Fratelli Rossetti brands. This post is my personal and honest product review.

Marko, this is a superb editorial that perfectly blends horology and fashion. The Briston Streamliner Kennedy with the tortoiseshell acetate sides and that square Art Deco case is a watch I hadn’t come across before, and now I’m thoroughly intrigued. The fact that the founder Brice Jaunet spent fifteen years at Cartier, Zenith and Raymond Weil before launching his own brand gives real credibility to the design choices. Your decision to swap the standard strap for the dark brown crocodile-embossed leather was inspired it elevates the whole look considerably.
Hello Marko, what a beautifully crafted post. I’ve been looking for a square-cased automatic watch under a thousand euros for quite some time, and the Briston Streamliner Kennedy seems to tick every box. The Miyota 9039 movement is a reliable workhorse that I’ve seen in several respected microbrands, so knowing it powers this watch gives me real confidence. Your photographs on the empty Spanish Steps are remarkable the soft morning light hitting the Herno jacket creates a beautiful interplay with the travertine stone. The tonal palette from the light Herno to the darker Armani trousers is perfectly calibrated.
Parece… Read more »
Marko, prachtig artikel.
Marko, this post is a masterclass in how to photograph a watch in context rather than in isolation. The shots where the Briston Streamliner Kennedy catches the morning light on the Spanish Steps are far more compelling than any studio photograph could ever be. I was particularly interested to learn that the acetate sides of the watch case require hand-polishing by Mazzucchelli, using techniques passed down through six generations. The guilloché pattern on the centre of the dial adds a level of refinement that genuinely surprised me at this price point. Would you say the 36mm case size wears larger… Read more »
What a thoroughly enjoyable read, Marko. The historical context you provide for each brand transforms what could be a simple outfit post into genuine education. Learning that Herno produced outerwear for Gucci, Prada, Louis Vuitton and Burberry during the 1980s before focusing on their own brand puts their quality credentials beyond question. The Briston Streamliner Kennedy is a watch that manages to feel both vintage and contemporary simultaneously, which is no small achievement. Your point about mechanical watches being a conscious choice in the age of smartwatches resonated deeply with me.
Marko, I must commend you on the photography in this post. The empty Spanish Steps at dawn provide a backdrop that most photographers can only dream of, and your team has used it brilliantly. The detail shots of the Briston Streamliner Kennedy are particularly impressive the double-layer dial with the hollowed-out Roman and Arabic numerals is clearly visible and shows just how much thought went into this design. I also appreciated the section on the Herno Globe sustainability initiative. Do you find the Herno jacket packable enough for travel, or does the blazer structure make it too rigid to fold?
Great post, Marko. The Briston Streamliner Kennedy is exactly the kind of watch I’ve been searching for distinctive enough to stand out on the wrist but refined enough to pair with tailored clothing. The fact that it comes with a quick-release strap system compatible with NATO, leather, steel and rubber options makes it incredibly versatile for different occasions. Your editorial on the Spanish Steps perfectly captures that early morning Roman atmosphere that most tourists never experience. The Herno jacket with its subtle sheen photographs beautifully against the travertine stone.
Marko, I found your post absolutely captivating. The way you described the textured wave pattern on the Giorgio Armani cashmere turtleneck creating a three-dimensional effect that catches the light was so vivid I could almost feel the fabric through the screen. The Briston Streamliner Kennedy with its dauphine hands and blued steel seconds hand is a combination of details that shows real horological sophistication. I was also moved by your closing reflection about the watch measuring something more valuable than time that’s a beautiful sentiment that elevates this beyond a typical fashion blog post.
Read more »
Marko, this is one of those posts where I learn something genuinely new about every brand mentioned. I had no idea that Herno’s down is exclusively sourced from Siberia and the Lomellina valley in Italy, with a strict prohibition on live-plucking. That kind of ethical commitment matters enormously to me as a consumer. The Briston Streamliner Kennedy with the crocodile-embossed strap against the backdrop of the Spanish Steps makes for some truly arresting imagery. How does the Armani turtleneck hold up after multiple washes does the relief texture maintain its shape?
Bonjour Marko, superbe article.
