KITON: Discover the most exclusive Italian clothing brand in the world!

My dear fashionistas, welcome to a new fashion story on the Mr.M blog. I hope you are well and ready for a new dose of fashion. We start today’s fashion adventure with new friends of the Mr.M blog who come from Italy. The brand that I will introduce you to today is at the very top of the fashion industry and represents one of the most exclusive Italian brands – KITON.

KITON is a trademark of Ciro Paone SpA, a company founded in 1956. Kiton as a brand was created in Arzan in the province of Naples in 1968. How did this brand get its name? The name Kiton comes from the “chiton”, a ceremonial tunic worn by the ancient Greeks and Romans to pray to the gods of Olympus. It is interesting that this brand launched a women’s clothing line for the first time in 1995.

A turning point in the company’s work occurred in 2008, when Mr. Ciro Paone bought suits and other items of clothing that once belonged to Edward VIII, Duke of Windsor, at a Sotheby’s auction. These items were presented by Mr. Paone at the Hotel Excelsior in Florence, Italy, during the biennial Pitti Uomo menswear show. The exhibition highlighted the historical elements of the suit that Paone incorporated into his contemporary Kiton suit design.

In 2009, KITON bought the wool factory Carlo Barbera, which was founded in 1949 in Biela. This allowed Kiton to work with delicate fibers such as viscose and create specialized yarns, dyes and weaves. A few years later, in 2013 to be exact, Kiton bought Palazzo Ferre, a building on Via Pontaccio that was home to the Gianfranco Ferre brand for 14 years. After the restoration, the second floor is planned to house Keaton’s showroom and offices, while the first floor would be a tailor shop. In the same year, Kiton launched its retail operations in India. Not long after, the brand launched its eyewear collection in 2015 and opened a 2,500 square foot store in San Francisco.

The turning point for this brand was the year 2018, when the KITON brand launched a collection for sports activities called KNT (Kiton New Texture). The KNT brand is owned by twins Walter and Marianne de Matteis, the latest generation of the Keaton family. Also, in 2018, Sergio Mattarella, President of the Republic of Italy, awarded Keaton the Premio Leonardo Qualità Italia award. Sadly, Mr. Ciro Paone, founder of Kiton, passed away at the age of 88 at his home in Naples, Italy on October 27, 2021.

In July 2023, the Keaton brand began to dress the team and players of the London club Tottenham Hotspur for official events. At the same time, Keaton opened a 350 square meter flagship store in Seoul in Cheongdam-dong.

KITON operates in the luxury goods sector and offers a tailor-made service, characterized by hand-tailored and tailored suits, as well as ready-to-wear men’s and women’s clothing. Kiton maintains an integrated supply chain with five company-owned factories: Coats, jackets, shirts, ties, shoes and fine leather goods are produced at the company’s headquarters in Arzan. Leather and bomber jackets are made in Collecchio. The knitwear comes from Fidenza. The jeans are produced in Marcianise, in the province of Caserta. The fabrics are processed and developed in Biella, Kiton’s woolen mill.

In 2000, KITON launched a training project with the establishment of the School for Advanced Tailoring, the goal of which was to train new generations of tailors. Keaton developed this course with two main goals: to prepare young people to enter the labor market and to ensure that the workforce is constantly updated. Most of the students are from Naples, although there are also applications from foreign students. Approximately 80% of these students secure a job in Keaton or in other companies. The institution offers a three-year program aimed at training individuals between the ages of 16 and 21 for professional roles. The curriculum, delivered by local instructors, primarily focuses on jacket creation during the first two years. In the third year, students are encouraged to choose and delve deeper into a specific phase of production.

Today’s fashion adventure continues with old well-known friends of Mr.M blog – Fratelli Rossetti. So they decided to start their story again from the beginning and decided to switch to the production of classic shoes. All this led to the creation of a small collection of men’s shoes with contours that differed from the various styles sold at the time. Renzo Rossetti consequently engaged in work that demonstrated his aesthetic sense and artistic perfectionism.

ZEGNA: The Beauty of the Refined Elegance of Linen…

We start today’s fashion adventure with new friends of Mr.M blog – ZEGNA. Ermenegildo Zegna, also known as Zegna or Ermenegildo Zegna Group is an Italian luxury fashion house. It was founded in 1910 in Triver, Biella, in the Piedmont region of northern Italy.

How did this exceptional Italian brand come about? Before founding the company, founder Ermenegildo Zegna’s father, Mr. Angelo, a former watchmaker, owned a woolen mill and looms in the Piedmont Alps, Italy. Ermenegildo, together with his brothers Edoardo and Mario, founded the company in 1910 in Triver in the Biellese Alps when he was only 18 years old, using his father’s looms and family property. A few years later, in 1915 to be precise, the company was renamed Fratelli Zegna di Angelo.

Zegna’s vision was to create high-quality fabrics, so he began to source wool directly from several countries around the world, such as Mongolia, Australia, South Africa, in addition to buying modern machines from England that enabled quality fabric production. During the interwar period, Zegna’s business began to flourish. In the late 1920s, the Lanificio (wool mill) employed more than 700 workers, which number grew to more than 1,000 in the late 1930s.

Not long after, in 1938, the company began exporting fabrics to the USA, through its subsidiary Zegna Woollens Corporation established in New York. Soon, in 1942, Ermenegildo’s sons Aldo and Angelo joined the family business of the company, which was renamed Ermenegildo Zegna and Sons. In the mid-1950s, the company employed over 1,400 workers.

Ermenegildo Zegna’s sons, Aldo and Angelo, took over the company in the mid-1960s. Under their leadership, the brand expanded its business into ready-to-wear and established new factories and distribution networks abroad. In 1968, the first factory for the production of sleeves and trousers was opened in Novara, followed by Spain, Greece and Switzerland. Sales and marketing departments have also been established in France, Germany, Great Britain and the USA. In the 1970s, Zegna launched its tailor-made service called Su Misura.

Zegna’s attention to wool quality continued in the 1960s and 1970s, as the company established the Wool Awards in Australia (1963) and the Mohair Trophy in South Africa (1970). The international development strategy led by the Zegna brothers led to the opening of the first owned boutique in Paris in 1980 and then in Milan in 1985. In the 1990s, more precisely in 1991, Zegna became the first luxury brand to open a boutique in China.

In the 1990s, the third generation of the Zegna family entered the business. Angelo’s son and namesake of the company’s founder, Ermenegildo “Gildo” Zegna, became CEO of Zegna Group in 1997, while his cousin Paolo was appointed president of Zegna Group. Under their leadership, the company embarked on a strategy of brand expansion and full verticalization. The first major recorded success was in 1991, when Zegna was the first luxury brand to enter the Chinese market, with a flagship store in Beijing and one of the first to enter the Indian market.

The ZEGNA brand has always been a favorite in the celebrity world. Numerous actors and models have advertised Zegna’s lines over the years. Celebrities featured in Zegna’s advertising campaigns are Oscar-winning actor Adrien Brody, American model Ryan Burns, Irish actor Jamie Dornan, English actor Sam Reilly. In 2017, Ermenegildo Zegna launched a four-chapter campaign called Defining Moments. Lanvin is a French luxury fashion house based in Paris. Founded in 1889 by Jeanne Lanvin, it is the oldest French fashion house still in operation. Midland Bank bought a stake in the company from the family in March 1989 and hired Leon Bressler to restore the firm’s faded image. However, in February 1990, Midland folded and sold Lanvin to Orcofa, a French holding company run by the Vuitton family.

It is a brand that you simply cannot be indifferent to, especially because of its impressive creations that have conquered the very top of the world fashion scene for decades.

Roberto Cavalli is a famous Italian luxury fashion company founded by designer Roberto Cavalli in Osmannore, Florence, during the 1970s. This brand has become famous in the fashion world for its colorful animal prints on leather and textiles. Roberto Cavalli produces and sells haute couture – a first line consisting of limited runway models, ready-to-wear products that are divided into several fashion lines, as well as fashion accessories, including handbags, glasses, watches, shoes, perfumes and jewelry. The company also develops an interior design program for high-end buildings and hotels.

Mr. Roberto Cavalli studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. His grandfather was a prominent painter of the Macchiaioli group. His fashion career began in the 1960s. Working in his own silk printing press, he began to apply a new painting technique to fully made garments, which later resulted in garment dyeing techniques. During the 1970s, he continued to experiment with other materials, mainly leather.

You must be wondering what the Patchwork technique is? Patchwork is a very interesting technique that has been known since ancient times. The oldest found patchwork works date back to the ancient Chinese civilization, and traces of such works were found in the famous Egyptian tombs.

Fans of this technique also call it “painting with rags”, and the word itself is of English origin and is composed of two words, patch-rag, and work-rad. Patchwork is a special technique of creative sewing, where different fabrics are combined with certain patterns and create decorative units. By combining materials of different geometric shapes, textures, colors, patterns and joining them together, you can make things for the home like bedspreads, cushions, rugs, refresh your furniture, make or refresh old fashion pieces and the like.

The basic way of working with patchwork is to cut and join different shapes and wholes. However, what should be emphasized is that with this technique, precision in work is very important. Each piece of patchwork fabric that is cut must be precisely measured and cut so that there are no mistakes and omissions in the further work.

How did this iconic brand come about? Gianni Versace, now officially rebranded as Versace, is an Italian luxury fashion brand founded by Gianni Versace in 1978. This fashion company produces Italian ready-to-wear and accessories, as well as haute couture under its signature Atelier Versace brand line. Gianni Versace is a native of Calabria, a city located in the ancient ancient region of Magna Grecia (Great Greece). Interestingly, the Versace logo was inspired by Medusa, a figure from Greek mythology.

Back in 1972, Gianni Versace designed his first collections for the Callaghan, Genni and Complice brands. Artigiano del Guanto (ADG) is an artisan glove workshop active in the northern part of Naples, founded by Giovanni Ricciardiello, an experienced glove maker for 10 decades, a historical exponent of the tradition of the ancient Neapolitan glove makers. A few years ago, in 2016 to be precise, the laboratory was renovated and with it the brand was born: Artigiano Del Guanto.
