My dear travellers and lovers of unusual journeys, welcome to the new hotel stay review on the Mr.M blog. How many years have I blogged, I realized that there are hotels that offer only a typical service that includes bed and breakfast, and on the other hand, there are also those that take you back several centuries, to the era when Amsterdam’s canals were the lifeblood of world trade, and the houses along the Herengracht testified to the power and wealth of Dutch merchants. Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam<\/a><\/strong> certainly belongs to the second category, as this is not just a hotel, but a real museum that reminds its guests that here the baroque past and modern luxury intertwine in a way that you can rarely experience anywhere else in Europe or the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before I start today’s review about this exceptional hotel in the heart of Amsterdam, I want to express my special thanks to the\u00a0United Nations World Tourism Organization – UN Tourism<\/a><\/strong> and Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam<\/a><\/strong> for supporting and promoting quality tourism around the world. When I arrived in Amsterdam for the umpteenth time in December 2025, the city welcomed me in a specific winter atmosphere that makes it so attractive outside of the summer season. It didn’t snow, but the short December days, the light installations on the canals and the warmth of the Dutch cafes created a scene that I remember as one of the most beautiful winter pictures I experienced in Europe after so many years. And in the heart of it all, at a well-known address in the city, the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam was waiting for me.<\/p>\n\n\n

HERENGRACHT: A STREET THAT TELLS A STORY OF POWER<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To understand why the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam<\/a><\/strong> hotel is so special, you must first understand where it is located. The hotel occupies addresses from 542 to 556 on the Herengracht, the so-called Lord’s Canal, the most prestigious of Amsterdam’s three main canals built during the Dutch Golden Age in the 17th century. This canal is part of the ring of canals that was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2010, which gave this entire part of Amsterdam the well-deserved protection and status of a cultural treasure of humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Herengracht got its name from the rich merchants and bankers who dominated the era of the Dutch Golden Age because the word ‘heren’ means gentlemen, and it was they who built the monumental houses along this canal. At that time, Amsterdam was the commercial center of the world, with powerful banking houses, naval fleets that sailed to Southeast Asia, and a cultural scene that gave birth to Rembrandt, Vermeer and a whole generation of artists whose works today adorn the world’s most important museums.<\/p>\n\n\n

It was in this context that the six canal palaces that make up today’s Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam<\/a><\/strong> hotel took shape. Built from the middle of the 17th century, these houses belonged in turn to some of Amsterdam’s most distinguished families: the De Wilt, Kemp, Hoft, Sauteijn, Becker and Brentano families. Each of them has its own story, and many original architectural elements such as frescoed ceilings, fireplaces, marble staircases, all details that have been preserved to this day in full.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WALDORF ASTORIA AMSTERDAM: HISTORY FROM NOBLY HOMES TO BANKS AND HOTELS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The history of these six palaces spans four centuries and several completely different uses. First there were the homes of the aristocracy, the house at number 546, for example, was built in 1672 for Mayor William Southeyne, a merchant who did business with Italy and the Levant. The house at number 548, where the main entrance to the hotel is today, was built in 1665 for Cornelis Becker, a member of the prominent Protestant Becker family. A special place is occupied by the Brentano Palace, bought in 1753 as the family home of Josephus Brentano, a Dutch merchant of Italian origin, who decorated the house in the opulent style of the eighteenth century. Emperor Alexander I of Russia, Dutch King William I and Prince Frederik stayed in this palace.<\/p>\n\n\n

Over time, many of these houses changed owners and uses. In the 1930s and 1960s, part of the building was converted into office space for shipbuilding companies and insurance companies. Later, all the houses were united and turned into the premises of the private bank MeesPierson. Traces of that banking period are still visible in the hotel today, the most striking example being the Vault Bar<\/a><\/strong>, located in the original bank vault, where the former safes have been converted into showcases for premium spirits and cocktails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The turning point occurred in 2014, when the new owners initiated a thorough restoration of the entire complex, turning it into the twenty-fifth hotel of the world-famous Waldorf Astoria<\/a><\/strong> brand, which is part of the Hilton Group<\/a><\/strong>. The renovation was carried out with exceptional attention to the original details, wall paintings over four hundred years old were restored and preserved, and each of the six palaces retained its identity and name. They entrusted the interior design to the London architectural studio GA Design, which managed to fit modern standards of luxury into the framework of historical architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n

I must admit that entering the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam<\/a><\/strong> is a special and unique experience. Through monumental wooden doors, you enter the high-ceilinged lobby, decorated with white plasterwork and baroque ornaments that immediately make it clear that this is no ordinary hotel. However, what really takes your breath away is the monumental staircase that rises through four floors, attributed to Daniel Morrow, the famous architect of the French King Louis XIV and the Dutch Viceroy William III. Maraud’s staircase, with its detailed marble reliefs and plasterwork of angels, is one of the most impressive examples of the Louis XIV style outside of France.<\/p>\n\n\n

At the reception, I was greeted with hot tea and chocolates in the shape of traditional Dutch clogs, a detail that is both charming and thoughtful. I was then offered to choose a fragrance for my room from the collection of the famous French house of Cire Trudon, the oldest candle maker in France, believed to have supplied the court of Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette. I chose Ernesto, an earthy, masculine fragrance with notes of rum, grapefruit, oak and tobacco. That scent was then placed in my suite, creating a stay experience that I still remember today. Details like this are exactly what separates the really high-end hotels from the ones that are just expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n

WALDORF ASTORIA AMSTERDAM: KING ONE BEDROOM SUITE WITH CANAL VIEW<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam<\/a><\/strong> hotel has 93 rooms, loft rooms and apartments, whose areas range from 28 to 123 square meters. Given that each of the six palaces had its own architecture, no room in the hotel is identical to another, each with a unique layout, ceiling height and original details that make it special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For my stay I chose the King One Bedroom Apartment with Canal View, an apartment that offers exactly what the name promises, a spacious living room and bedroom overlooking the famous Herengracht. The area of \u200b\u200bthis suite offers six different zones for sleeping, relaxing, working and dressing, which makes it ideal for those who want more than just a place to stay in a hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n

The living room is elegantly furnished with a comfortable sofa, a desk and a 42-inch TV. It leads to the master bedroom with the signature Waldorf Astoria king size bed, upholstered in the finest Egyptian cotton. The comfort of this bed is something that cannot be described in words, after a full day of sightseeing in Amsterdam in the December cold, I lay down and felt every muscle relax. If you’ve ever slept on a bed that made you wish you never got up, then you know what I’m talking about.<\/p>\n\n\n

The bathroom is spacious, with a separate shower and a bathtub in which a small TV is installed, a detail that may seem like an exaggeration, but after a long day in winter Amsterdam, a bath with a favorite show becomes a completely logical luxury. The toiletries are from Aesop, and the hair dryer is Dyson, little things that speak of attention to the quality of every detail. The apartment is additionally equipped with an espresso machine, an electronic safe big enough for a laptop and free wireless internet.<\/p>\n\n\n

What makes this apartment truly unforgettable is the view. High windows with original frames frame the canal like a living picture, especially in the evening, when the lights reflect on the water, the scene is almost painterly. December Amsterdam, seen from the warmth of this apartment, remained in my memory as a perfect combination of festive euphoria and magnificence.<\/p>\n\n\n

WALDORF ASTORIA AMATERDAM GASTRONOMIC EXPERIENCE: FROM MICHELIN STARS TO BANK VAULT<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam<\/a><\/strong> offers several different gastronomic concepts<\/a><\/strong> and each of them deserves special attention. At the top of the pyramid stands Spectrum<\/a><\/strong>, a restaurant with two Michelin stars that offers a superior gastronomic experience with a tasting menu that changes with the seasons. This restaurant is the successor of the former Librije’s Zusje Amsterdam and has continued the tradition of exceptional cuisine with an innovative approach to European cuisine. Spectrum uses local, seasonal ingredients and transforms them into dishes that are both visually spectacular and aromatically complex. Reservations in advance are mandatory, and not only as a formality, the restaurant is in high demand among connoisseurs of top food from all over the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peacock Alley<\/a><\/strong> is an elegant lounge in the lobby area of \u200b\u200bthe hotel, intended for all-day enjoyment – from a light lunch, through the famous afternoon tea, to evening cocktails. Afternoon tea at Peacock Alley is a special ritual that the hotel has raised to the level of art. Inspired by the works of Dutch masters of painting, this tea includes small edible masterpieces inspired by Van Gogh’s sunflowers, Rembrandt’s canvases and the figurative world of Dutch Baroque painting. A selection of savory and sweet snacks, accompanying teas and fresh English scones are also served. For anyone who appreciates rituals and an artistic approach to food, this is a must experience.<\/p>\n\n\n

And then there’s the Vault Bar, perhaps the most intriguing space in the entire hotel. The atmosphere is intimate, with an air of secrecy reminiscent of the elegant speakeasies of the Prohibition era. Here you can try carefully prepared avant-garde cocktails, rare Scotch whiskeys and selected wines. For couples, the Vault Bar also offers a special experience, dinner for two in a private part of the vault, with a “search for the ring” through the numbered safes. A more romantic way to propose is hard to imagine.<\/p>\n\n\n

Goldfinch Brasserie deserves a special mention outside of the breakfast context as well. This elegant garden-view restaurant offers contemporary European cuisine in a more relaxed atmosphere than Spectrum, making it ideal for a light lunch or early dinner. The menu changes seasonally, and the focus is on fresh, local ingredients prepared with a French approach and Dutch practicality. For guests who want quality food without the formality of a tasting menu, Goldfinch is the perfect choice.<\/p>\n\n\n

Breakfast is served in the Goldfinch Brasserie, which overlooks the hotel’s private garden. It is an extensive buffet with Dutch cheeses, smoked salmon, fresh pastries, fruit, yogurt and one hot dish of your choice. A recommendation is the Waldorf Astoria Eggs Benedict, an English muffin with sauteed baby spinach, salmon, organic poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. The breakfast is what I would call thoughtfully sumptuous, it doesn’t go overboard with the amount, but every dish is of exceptional quality, prepared with love. The staff is very pleasant and always ready to give the best recommendation, after a few days they learned my habits and we became friends.<\/p>\n\n\n

GUERLAIN SPA: AN OASIS OF PEACE IN THE HEART OF THE CITY<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the basement of the hotel, with direct access to the private garden, there is a luxurious Guerlain Spa<\/a><\/strong>, the first of its kind in the Benelux countries. Guerlain, the famous French house that is synonymous with the highest level of care and beauty, offers here treatments that combine the expertise of their therapists with exclusive products that cannot be found in ordinary sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The spa has three intimate treatment rooms, an indoor swimming pool, a sauna, a steam room and a modern fitness center. The pool is particularly beautiful, indoor, with a discreet fountain element, surrounded by soothing tones and subdued lighting. <\/p>\n\n\n

After a morning swim or an evening sauna, the feeling of relaxation is complete. I had the opportunity to try several of their treatments and I can say that this is a really special experience for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the spa, the hotel also houses a Guerlain boutique with an exclusive range of perfumes, cosmetics and candles, including products sold exclusively in Guerlain Spa centers around the world. For lovers of premium skin care and perfumes, this is the destination for themselves. One thing is for sure – I will definitely come back here again on my next visit to Amsterdam!<\/p>\n\n\n

During my stay I was impressed with the level of care provided by the staff. The hotel has been awarded multiple times, it is among the first on TripAdvisor’s lists for the best luxury hotel in the Netherlands, has a five-star rating from Forbes Travel Guide, and their spa received global recognition at the World Luxury Spa Awards. These awards are not advertising gimmicks, they are a reflection of the consistent quality that is felt in every corner of this historic architectural building.<\/p>\n\n\n

AMSTERDAM IN DECEMBER: WHY WINTER MAY BE THE BEST TIME TO VISIT<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Many travelers choose Amsterdam to visit during the summer period, but I argue that December may be a better choice, especially for those who appreciate peace, culture and an atmosphere without crowds. When I arrived, the city was enveloped in that festive winter beauty and euphoria, which always reminds me of my childhood, especially the cinnamon-scented cookies that smell for a mile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the biggest perks of a winter visit is the Amsterdam Light Festival, an annual festival of light art installations that runs from late November to mid-January. During this festival, the canals are transformed into an open-air gallery, around twenty works of light art are installed along the waterways, and the best way to experience them is by taking a boat ride on the canals. The sight of light sculptures reflected in the dark water of the canal is something that simply must be seen live.<\/p>\n\n\n

Winter Amsterdam is also a paradise for museum lovers. The queues in front of the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum are much shorter than in summer, which means that you can spend your time in peace in front of Rembrandt’s Night Watch or Van Gogh’s Starry Night without being pushed and rushed. The Rijksmuseum, located on the Museumplein, houses a collection of over eight thousand objects from the Dutch Golden Age, and the building itself is an architectural masterpiece worth seeing from the outside as well. The Van Gogh Museum houses over seven hundred works by this genius, including paintings by those who inspired him, such as Monet and Gauguin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An open-air ice rink is set up on Museumplein in December, overlooking the Rijksmuseum, one of the most photogenic ice rinks in Europe. Around the rink, stands spring up with hot chocolate, mulled wine and oliebolen, the traditional Dutch donuts baked for the New Year. The smell of fresh oliebolen in the cold December air is something that immediately gets you into the festive spirit of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n

Dutch winter cuisine is another reason to visit Amsterdam at this time of year. Snert, a thick pea soup, stamppot, a traditional dish made from potatoes and vegetables, and fondue made from the famous Dutch cheeses, are perfect winter food after a long day in the cold. And for dessert, warm stroopwafels, two thin waffles fused together with caramel, and poffertjes, mini pancakes dusted with powdered sugar, will offer you just the kind of comfort you need in December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another advantage of a winter visit is that in December Amsterdam hosts a whole series of Christmas and New Year’s fairs. Funky Xmas Market in the Westergas complex offers an alternative approach, instead of classic decorations, here you will find unique handmade items, circus entertainers and food from all over the world. For a more classic atmosphere, there is the Christmas Village on the Museumplein, with wooden houses, local food and music. The Royal Theater Carr\u00e9 shows the World Christmas Circus at this time, while the Concertgebouw offers classical music concerts in one of the most acoustically perfect halls in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n

WHAT TO DO IN AMSTERDAM DURING DECEMBER?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Amsterdam is a city best explored on foot, and the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam<\/a><\/strong> is ideally situated for all the key sights. Here is what I would recommend based on my own experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum are a must first stop. I suggest you come right after opening because it gets crowded in the afternoon even in winter. Tickets must be purchased online in advance. The MOCO Museum on the same square offers modern art works by Warhol, Banksy and Heiring and is a great contrast to the classic masters from the neighboring museums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Anne Frank House is another must-see, but tickets should be booked weeks in advance as they sell out quickly. Rembrandt’s house on the Jodenbreestraat provides an insight into the daily life and work of the greatest Dutch painter, with an original workshop and engraving tools.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Jordaan district, a former working-class neighborhood that is now one of the most charming parts of the city, is perfect for a winter stroll. Narrow streets, independent galleries, antiques and small cafes where you can sit for hours with a hot drink all make the Jordaan ideal for relaxed exploration. The Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes), located between the main canals, offer unique boutiques, vintage shops and local craft shops ideal for buying special gifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For architecture lovers, a walk along Reguliersgracht is a must, this canal connects Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht, and from one bridge you can see fifteen bridges at the same time. In the evening, when the bridges are lit up, the sight is truly magical. The Utrechtsestraat, which is a stone’s throw from the hotel, is full of great restaurants, cafes and small shops, ideal for a night out without the need for a taxi.<\/p>\n\n\n

I would especially recommend a visit to the so-called brown cafes, traditional Dutch beer halls with dark wooden interiors and the patina of centuries. Caf\u00e9 Hoppe, which has been declared a national monument, and Caf\u00e9 Chris, where Rembrandt himself is said to have sat, are perfect for an afternoon break with a local beer or genever, a traditional Dutch juniper spirit. In December, many of these cafes set up blankets and heaters outside, so you can enjoy the atmosphere even outdoors, wrapped in wool, overlooking the canal and a cup of hot drink in hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For shopping, PC Hooftstraat is Amsterdam’s version of Milan’s Via Montenapoleone, home to boutiques from leading fashion houses, from Chanel and Louis Vuitton to smaller, specialist Dutch design shops. This street can be reached from the hotel in about fifteen minutes on foot, passing through the Spiegelkwartier, a street with over seventy galleries and antiques and worth seeing in itself.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Koninklijk Paleis, or Royal Palace on Dam Square, is an impressive seventeenth-century building that still serves the ceremonial needs of the Dutch royal family. The interior is decorated with marble and works by famous Dutch painters, and the entrance is open to the public most of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those who like something different, the Heineken Experience offers an interactive tour through the former brewery of this world-famous brand, while the House of Bols offers an insight into the four-hundred-year history of the oldest distillery brand in the world and a tasting of jenever, a traditional Dutch drink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PRACTICAL INFORMATION FOR GUESTS OF THE WALDORF ASTORIA AMSTERDAM HOTEL<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam<\/a><\/strong> hotel is located at Herengracht 542-556, in the heart of the city. Schiphol Airport is about twenty minutes away by car. The reception is open twenty-four hours a day, and check-in at the hotel is from 3:00 p.m., while check-out is until 12:00 p.m. Parking is possible in the hotel itself, with prior reservation, at a price of ninety euros per day, with the service of a parking attendant. A charging station for electric cars is also available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hotel offers free bicycle rental for guests, in a city where the bicycle is the primary means of transportation, this is an invaluable amenity. The Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam also has its own boat dock in front of the hotel, which makes it possible to organize private canal tours directly from the hotel address. For everything from theater tickets to private museum tours, there is a personal concierge ready to organize every detail during your stay.<\/p>\n\n\n
