Bard’s Whisper<\/a><\/strong> is an independent watch brand from Taiwan. Its Chinese name translates as the murmur of a wandering poet, and the founder takes that idea literally. He sees the brand as a traveling bard. It collects stories from around the world and brings them home as small works of craft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man behind it is Zhang Sen-jie (\u5f35\u68ee\u5091) and his road to watchmaking was anything but typical. He studied drama and dreamed of the stage. However, life pushed him into tourism, where he spent thirteen years as a tour guide. He turned the tour bus into his theater. He rewrote dry history as little scripts, and he says some travelers ended up in tears.<\/p>\n\n\n

Then his daughter was born. His trips often lasted more than ten days, and after one of them, the little girl no longer remembered him. That moment changed his priorities. Around the same time, a client showed him a European master watch worth a small fortune. The miniature sculpture on its dial stayed in his mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He started with jewelry and accessories. Later, about seven years ago, he stepped into watchmaking. His goal sounds simple, yet I find it very modern. He wants you to glance at your wrist and, for a few seconds, feel calm instead of rushed.<\/p>\n\n\n

BARD\u2019S WHISPER: A WORKSHOP SPREAD ACROSS AN ENTIRE ISLAND<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is the part that impressed me most. Taiwan has no Swiss-style watch valley with every supplier a short drive away. So Zhang built his own network. Early on, he outsourced production and received dials that looked wrong and hands that fell off. After that painful lesson, he decided never to outsource craft blindly again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, he became what he calls the convener of an art project. He searched the island for the best specialists and connected them. Leather artisans in Kaohsiung hand-make the straps for every Bard’s Whisper watch. For this series, the Kaohsiung workshop Chang An 30 spent a year developing a quick-release strap that relieves pressure on the wrist. Painters in Neihu, Yingge and Taipei apply the color by hand. Casting and cases come from partners in Tainan. On top of that, the team turned Taiwan’s strength in 3D printing into a micro-casting process for tiny sculptural parts.<\/p>\n\n\n

According to the founder, building this system cost nearly 80 million Taiwan dollars. As a result, Bard’s Whisper can produce small, varied series while keeping each watch truly artistic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The timeline shows steady growth. In 2020, the first Gothic Origin piece, “Madonna,” found its audience through crowdfunding. Two years later, “Saint George and the Dragon” raised the bar. Then came the most ambitious chapter so far: Dante.<\/p>\n\n\n

BARD\u2019S WHISPER: DANTE\u2019S PURGATORIO, SEVEN CENTURIES LATER<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dante Alighieri wrote the Divine Comedy in the early fourteenth century. The poem has three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso. In the first two, the Roman poet Virgil guides Dante through the afterlife. Later, Beatrice, the woman he loved, leads him toward redemption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Purgatorio is the middle chapter, and for me it is the most human one. It is not about punishment or perfect bliss. Instead, it is about climbing, slowly, toward something better. At the top of that mountain, Dante reaches a garden. I like to read the wreath of golden roses on this dial as a nod to that garden, although that is my own interpretation, not the brand’s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bard’s Whisper<\/a><\/strong> did its homework before designing a single watch. In 2022, the team went back to medieval history, culture and manuscripts. After that, more than twenty Taiwanese experts worked together for seven months. The group included scholars, sculptors, watchmakers, engineers, modelers, animators and even blockchain specialists. Together, they built the Divine Comedy series inside the brand’s Gothic Origin family, with chapters for Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bard’s Whisper<\/a><\/strong> watch on my wrist is the Purgatorio “ver. Opal Crystal” edition<\/a><\/strong>. It is a strictly limited run. Each piece carries its own number and a signature on the caseback. In addition, every watch comes with a blockchain certificate of authenticity. I appreciate that, because it turns a beautiful object into a traceable one.<\/p>\n\n\n

WHAT MAKES THE BARD\u2019S WHISPER OPAL DIAL SO SPECIAL?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Let me describe what you actually see, because photos only tell half the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the center sits a pattern that reminds me of a Gothic rose window. Its tracery is solid S925 sterling silver, cast in miniature. Each cell holds genuine precious opal, set by hand by master painter Zhao Jia-mi. Around the window runs a wreath of roses, buds and leaves. Copper-foil gilding gives those flowers their warm golden glow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The color direction came from Chen Yuan-zhi, an illustrator known for his Apple Daily covers. Meanwhile, the design and sculpting belong to Jia Long-xi, the brand’s art director and founder of the GKANDMAKE modeling community. He developed a four-layer micro-section technique. In plain words, the team carves four layers of relief into a dial only two to three millimeters thick. Some details measure just 0.3 millimeters.<\/p>\n\n\n

Still, the opal is the real performer. Precious opal shows what gemologists call play-of-color. Tiny spheres of silica inside the stone bend the light, so the colors shift as you move. In the shade, the dial turns deep green and blue. Under direct sun, red and orange sparks jump out. Honestly, it is the kind of dial that makes you check the time more often than you need to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Slim silver hands float above it all. They stay easy to read, and they never hide the artwork for long.<\/p>\n\n\n

It helps to understand why the materials on this Bard’s Whisper<\/a><\/strong> watch work so well together. The S925 stamp means sterling silver, an alloy of 92.5 percent silver. Jewelers have used it for centuries because it holds fine detail and keeps a bright, cool tone. A pretty dial alone does not make a serious watch, so I looked closely at the rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case measures 45 mm and uses 316L stainless steel. I usually prefer smaller watches, so I will not pretend this one is discreet. Even so, the size makes sense here. The dial is a stage, and a stage needs room. Besides, the lugs curve down toward the wrist, which helps the fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On this Bard’s Whisper<\/a><\/strong> watch, the lugs are my favorite detail. Each one looks like a narrow Gothic window, with engraved and blackened tracery. The bezel carries a fine engraved border as well. Turn the watch sideways, and you find a floral motif engraved into the brushed case flank. A fluted crown with a decorated end sits at three o’clock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside the Bard’s Whisper watch ticks a Swiss Sellita SW200 automatic movement. It is a proven workhorse that beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour. For an art watch, that choice feels wise. You get reliability and easy servicing, while the creativity stays on the dial. A sapphire crystal protects the front, and a sapphire exhibition back shows the movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Water resistance is 30 meters, so think daily wear, not swimming. The watch comes on a hand-stitched black calf-leather strap with a quick-release system. Finally, the presentation matches the theme: a lacquered hardwood box, a leather travel pouch and a commemorative medallion.<\/p>\n\n\n

GPHG 2026: HOW BARD\u2019S WHISPER KNOCKED ON GENEVA\u2019S DOOR<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This year, Bard’s Whisper<\/a><\/strong> reached a stage most young watch brands only dream about. It entered the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Gen\u00e8ve, better known as the GPHG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you do not follow watches closely, think of the GPHG as the Oscars of watchmaking. The awards began in 2001. Since 2020, an Academy of industry professionals, collectors and experts has proposed candidate watches and voted on them. This year marks the 26th edition, and it drew 320 timepieces from 194 brands. The Academy then nominated 84 of them. The GPHG will reveal the winners in Geneva on November 7, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the brand, Academy member Benjamin Hui personally recommended its Burning Godzilla collector’s piece for this edition. That creation marks 30 years of the famous “Burning Godzilla.” The brand developed it with the Taiwanese toy developer PeariA, under an official license from Japan’s Toho. For a Taiwanese independent, a recommendation like that is rare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is also not the brand’s first step into that circle. The official GPHG website already lists The Three Gorgons (“Song of Awe”), a Medusa-themed piece from the same Gothic Origin series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For me, the trophy is not the point. The point is that a small team working across Kaohsiung, Tainan and Taipei now stands in the same entry list as historic Swiss houses. That says a lot about where independent watchmaking is heading.<\/p>\n\n\n

BRIONI: THE ROMAN HOUSE THAT PUT MEN ON THE RUNWAY<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Now to the clothes, starting with a name that shaped modern menswear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Master tailor Nazareno Fonticoli and entrepreneur Gaetano Savini opened the first Brioni<\/a><\/strong> store in 1945, at Via Barberini 79 in Rome. They named it after the Brijuni islands off the Istrian coast, a fashionable resort between the two world wars. In 1952, Brioni staged the first men’s runway show in modern fashion history, in the Sala Bianca of Palazzo Pitti in Florence. Until then, the catwalk belonged to women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is a fact that fits this post perfectly. That same year, Brioni<\/a><\/strong> registered a polo player as its logo. That happened more than a decade before Polo Ralph Lauren started using its own version of the symbol. So a Brioni polo carries a little more history than most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the decades, the house dressed Hollywood stars, heads of state and, famously, James Bond. In 1959, it opened an atelier in Penne, in Abruzzo. That step helped Brioni grow while keeping its handmade quality.<\/p>\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the silk adds a gentle sheen and a cool, smooth touch on hot days. The details show the quality: ribbed cuffs that hug the arm, a ribbed hem that sits cleanly at the waist, and a relaxed collar with a short button placket. I wear it open, and it looks elegant without trying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For mature men, a knit polo like this solves a real problem. It feels as easy as a T-shirt, yet it looks much closer to a shirt. Also, short sleeves leave the wrist free, which matters when your watch deserves attention. And this pale shade of pink flatters most skin tones in summer.<\/p>\n\n\n

FPM<\/a><\/strong> stands for Fabbrica Pelletterie Milano. Enrico Fremder founded the company in Milan in 1946, with a focus on handbags, briefcases and luggage. The brand even ran a store on New York’s Fifth Avenue from 1956 to 1964. Later, his son Beppi, who had built a long career at Samsonite, brought the family name back to life. For that revival, he worked with the Vienna-born, Milan-based designer Marc Sadler. Together they created the Bank collection, which debuted in 2015. Its name refers to a bank vault, a place that keeps valuables safe.<\/p>\n\n\n

My white leather backpack carries that same DNA. Its official name is the Butterfly Leather Backpack, and FPM<\/a><\/strong> designed it for both weekends and business trips. Skilled artisans craft it in Italy from grained Italian leather. On the front sits the signature butterfly lock, the clasp that defines FPM style. Below it hangs a luggage tag with a ribbed, brushed aluminum plate, which reminds me of the ridged Bank suitcases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The practical side convinces me just as much. There are two zipped side pockets, a front pocket with two zip openings, and a drawstring closure for quick access. Inside, you find a zipped pocket, padded sleeves for a laptop and a tablet, and a small open pocket. The shoulder straps adjust and detach, and a sleeve on the back slides over a suitcase handle. With 27 liters of space, it handles a short trip with ease.<\/p>\n\n\n

LANVIN BUMPER SNEAKERS: PARIS RUNS INTO THE SEVENTIES<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Lanvin<\/a><\/strong> is the oldest French fashion house still in operation. Jeanne Lanvin founded it in Paris in 1889, when she was a 22-year-old milliner. Its famous logo shows a mother and her little daughter. The illustrator Paul Iribe drew it from a photograph of Jeanne with her daughter Marguerite. I find it touching that this tender image still appears on a sneaker tongue today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bumper arrived for Spring-Summer 2020 as the first Lanvin unisex sneaker. Bruno Sialelli, the creative director at the time, designed it with 1970s running shoes in mind. It features a triple-thickness sole and a back wing at the heel, which Lanvin compares to a car spoiler. The original release even had a worn finish on the sole and laces, as if sand and seawater had faded them. The house repeats its logo in four places: embroidered in gold thread on the tongue, embossed on the heel pull, and engraved on the spoiler and in the treaded sole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My pair is all-white leather, with tonal side stripes and a stitched seam running down the toe. The cream sole softens the look, so it never feels too sporty. With white trousers, the effect is seamless, because the leg simply flows into the shoe.<\/p>\n\n\n
