My dear fashionistas, welcome to a new fashion story on the Mr.M blog. Some trips change perspective, but it’s rare that they change the way we think about our own style. This incredible trip through Venezuela took me to Canaima National Park, to a place where the sky touches the ancient tepui mountains, where water falls from heights that can hardly be imagined and where, thanks to the support of the Ministry of Tourism of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela – MINTUR and the hospitality of the unforgettable Mrs. Mary at Wakü Lodge, I discovered something that I did not expect, that true elegance is not tied to the city streets of the world’s metropolises, but there is something more.
I sit on the bank of the river, dressed in a draped brown linen shirt by ISAIA Napoli, overlooking the waterfall that falls from the Auyán-tepui mountain, and I think about the paradox that brought me here. How is it that I feel most elegant right in the heart of the wilderness, miles away from any catwalks or boutiques? The answer lies in the philosophy that ISAIA Napoli, Loro Piana and other great Italian houses have cultivated for decades, elegance is not the uniform or costume you wear, but the way you live.
WHY VENEZUELA, WHY NOW?
Before diving into the story of the brands that accompanied me on this trip, I want to explain why this destination is significant. Canaima is not a tourist attraction in the traditional sense, it is an almost mystical place, where nature is not tamed or adapted to human expectations. Salto Angel (Angel Falls), the highest waterfall on the planet, falls from a height of 979 meters, almost a kilometer of pure vertical. Tepui Mountains, those massive flat-topped rocks, are geologically isolated islands that are over two billion years old.
The decision to bring pieces of Neapolitan and Italian haute couture into such an environment was not an easy one, it was a serious test. I wanted to see if the clothes I talk about so much, that cost what they cost, could really stand side by side with the greatness of nature. Can the finest linen breathe in tropical humidity? Can tumbled leather espadrilles walk on rocky and stony jungle paths? Can elegance survive outside the safe zones of urban spaces?
ISAIA NAPOLI: THE SOUL OF THE MEDITERRANEAN IN EVERY SEAM
Four Generations of Neapolitan Passion
When the wind from the waterfall blows my shirt, I can feel every stitch, every thread of this ISAIA Napoli creation. And each of those stitches carries a story that begins back in the 1920s in Naples, a city that is not just a geographic location, but a state of mind. Enrico Isaia, the man who founded this dynasty, did not dream of an international fashion empire. He dreamed of creating clothes that would reflect what it truly means to be Neapolitan: a warm, passionate, elegant man without pretension.
Naples is not Milan. Milan is business elegance, where structure and precision rule. Naples, on the other hand, represents a wealth of colors, the simple beauty of life and spontaneity. When you see a man in an ISAIA Napoli suit or shirt, you don’t see a robot in a uniform, you see a person who breathes through his clothes, who moves naturally, whose personality is not suppressed but strengthened by what he wears.
This shirt I’m wearing, in that specific drape brown shade that reminds me of old Mediterranean merchant ships, was created in the studio where most craftsmen have been working for thirty, forty years. These are not people who learned tailoring at university, they learned it from their fathers, who learned it from their fathers. It is a living heritage passed down through the hands of generations, not through books.
Neapolitan Tailoring Magic: What goes unnoticed is the most important
A layman can look at this shirt and see only a brown shirt. But truly, each element is the result of a conscious decision of the master who worked on it. The collar is not just folded, it is “arricciato a mano”, hand gathered using a technique that requires years of practice. This process creates a collar that not only fits well, but adapts to the neck in a way that is almost organic.
The sleeves have a “manica a camicia” fit, which means that they are not simply sewn on at a right angle but are placed with a slight curve that follows the natural position of the human hand. The result? Complete freedom of movement. I can climb, bend down, gesture like the Italians do and the shirt moves with me like a second layer of skin.
The buttons were not bought in bulk from a second-hand store. Each button is individually mother of pearl, but this is also key, they are not all absolutely identical. They have slight variations in shade and texture, which gives them authenticity. In a world of machine precision, ISAIA Napoli intentionally retains those small imperfections that are actually proof of handwork.
The drap brown color did not come from a chemical dye. ISAIA Napoli uses natural pigments and dyeing techniques that allow the linen to retain its porosity and breathability. That’s why this shirt, even in the humid atmosphere next to the waterfall, does not stick to the body, but absorbs moisture, but also quickly releases it.
ISAIA Napoli: Why Lan, Why Just Like This
Flax is not a random choice for ISAIA Napoli. In the Mediterranean, where the sun is scorching but the shores bring moisture, linen was a necessity of life for centuries before it became a fashion necessity. The ancient Phoenicians wove linen. The Egyptians wrapped mummies in linen. It is a fiber that has followed civilization.
But ISAIA Napoli doesn’t use just any linen. Their linen comes from the fields of Normandy and Flanders, where a specific combination of soil, climate and tradition creates fibers that are both robust and gentle. After the harvest, the flax goes through a process that has not changed significantly in several centuries, natural retting in the fields, hand combing, spinning on traditional winches. Retting (“wetting”) is immersing flax stalks in water or leaving them on wet ground (most often in fields) to dissolve the pectic substances that bind the fibers to the woody part of the stalk.
Here in Venezuela, as I walk the paths next to the Churún River, I feel why flax was the most logical choice. It does not heat. Don’t choke. When I sweat, the linen absorbs the moisture but doesn’t feel heavy. When the tropical wind blows, the shirt flutters, but there is no “balloon” effect. It is functional elegance in its purest form.
ISAIA Philosophy: “Acqua di Napoli”
“Acqua di Napoli” – the water of Naples. That’s the term ISAIA Napoli uses to describe his approach. What does it actually mean? It is freshness, it is lightness, it is a way of life where elegance is not an effort but a natural state. Imagine a man walking along the coast of Naples at sunset, not huddled in a heavy suit, not sweating under numerous burdensome layers. He wears linen that moves lightly, a shirt whose collar may even be unbuttoned, shoes that allow him to feel the sand under his feet.
It is the antithesis of Nordic austerity or British rigidity. ISAIA Napoli believes that a man can be elegant without losing his masculine energy, his warmth, his ability to smile and be spontaneous. Their creations will never be harsh or distant, they are always friendly, approachable, human.
As I sit here at Wakü Lodge, watching how the employees led by Mrs. Mary easily carry out daily tasks and how they easily move through the space, serve meals, share stories with visitors with a smile, I realize that “Acqua di Napoli” is not just a fashion concept, it is a philosophy of life that values the authenticity found in the truth of our being.
LORO PIANA: ARCHITECTURE OF IMPECCABLE SIMPLICITY
Six Generations of Sophisticated Obsession
Loro Piana is not a story about hype. It’s a whisper that only those with the right ear and fashion sense can hear. While ISAIA Napoli brings Mediterranean warmth and passion, Loro Piana brings Northern-Italian precision and the assurance of a quietly luxurious quality. Since 1812, six generations of the Loro Piano family have worked with one goal: to find the finest fibers on the planet and turn them into fabrics that define modern luxury.
What sets this brand apart is not marketing or celebrity endorsements. Loro Piana is hardly advertised in the traditional sense. Their reputation is built through a network between those in the know, between those who can recognize the exceptional when they see it. It’s fashion for people who don’t have to prove absolutely anything to anyone.
The linen pants I wear are not an attempt to stand out. They are so inconspicuous that the average observer would never think they are special. But people with refined taste will notice the way the fabric falls, how it moves with each step, how the light plays on the surface of the fibers.
Beige Color Like Pastel Fashion Philosophy
Why beige? Why not some vivid color, some eye-catching pattern? Loro Piana is a company that believes that real luxury is in the material, not in the ornamentation. Beige is a color that doesn’t try, it’s simply at its peak. It is the color of unbleached cotton, natural wool, beach sand, stone that has been smoothed by water for centuries.
These pants are not beige because the color beige is always “on trend”, they are beige because that shade best shows the quality of the linen used. Every irregularity in the spinning, every fault in the weaving would be visible against this neutral background. The fact that the fabric is perfect, that there are no knots, that every square centimeter is flawless, that is what this color reveals.
In the surroundings of the Canaima National Park, this beige shade becomes a camouflage, but not one that hides, but one that blends in. The stones by the river are in similar tones. Sand on the shores. Even the bark of some trees. I wear the color of nature and in a way, I become a part of it.
A Cut That Respects the Body
Loro Piana trousers don’t try to shape your body. They are not trying to make you taller, thinner, different than you are. Instead, they follow natural lines, respect proportions, allow freedom.
The belt is designed with internal reinforcement that distributes the weight around the pelvis, not just at one point. This means you can wear the pants all day without that familiar feeling of pressure. The pockets are placed at an angle that follows the natural fall of the arm, not where it’s aesthetically pleasing in the picture, but where it’s functional for the man wearing the pants.
The length is calibrated to end right at the top of the foot, creating a slight overlap that prevents the fabric from riding up when you sit. The width of the legs is that “golden mean”, narrow enough to look modern, yet wide enough to allow air circulation in a tropical climate.
Espadrilles: Mediterranean Wisdom Meets Italian Refinement
Loro Piana‘s tumbled leather espadrilles are perhaps the most perfect example of their philosophy. They took a form of footwear originating from the peasant tradition, espadrilles worn for centuries by fishermen and workers along the Spanish-French-Italian coast and turned it into an object of high craftsmanship.
The antelope tumbled leather used is not ordinary leather. It is specially processed calfskin, which is first tanned using traditional methods, then combed to a velvety smoothness, and then treated with natural waxes that make it water-repellent, but do not change its ability to breathe. The result is a material that is softer than silk but more durable than ordinary leather.
The jute sole, the traditional heart of every espadrille, has been refined here, but they have not betrayed tradition. Loro Piana uses jute from Bangladesh, where the fiber grows in river deltas and has a specific strength. This jute is then woven into thick “ropes” that form the sole, with natural rubber added between the layers for flexibility and durability.
Each espadrille is hand sewn, the artisan takes the upper part of the shoe and joins it to the sole using thick rope thread. This seam is visible along the edge, and it is on purpose. Loro Piana does not hide the production process – they celebrate it.
In practical terms, these espadrilles were ideal for Venezuela. They are light – I feel them as an extension of my feet, not as something I “put on”. They are flexible – I can walk on uneven rocky surfaces without fear. And despite their casualness, they are refined enough not to spoil the overall elegance of the outfit.
MONOCHROME PALETTE: WHEN THE ABSENCE OF COLOR BECOME THE STRONGEST STATEMENT
This whole outfit, drap brown ISAIA Napoli shirt, beige Loro Piana trousers, beige Loro Piana espadrilles runs in a very narrow range of colors. It might seem boring to some. But it is precisely in this restraint that his strength lies.
In a world where everyone craves attention, where every brand puts their name on your forehead, where fashion has often become a circus, the monochrome palette is a whisper of quiet luxury that attracts more than the hype of a logo. This monochrome palette says, “I’m confident enough that I don’t need gimmicks.”
Also, neutral colors focus attention on what is really important: on the cut, on the fall of the fabric, on the texture. When you look at this outfit, you don’t just see the brown shirt and beige pants, you see the way the linen moves, the way the suede leather reflects the light, the way the lines of the body interact with the lines of the clothing.
In the context of my stay in Canaima National Park, where nature offers a spectacle of colors, the green color of the jungle, blue sky, white waterfalls, my neutral outfit becomes a frame that frames nature, does not compete with it. My goal was not to be the most striking thing in the photo, the goal is to be part of a harmonious whole.
LESSONS FROM THE TEPUI MOUNTAINS: WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT ELEGANCE
As I spent my days at Wakü Lodge, with Mary sharing stories about this magical place and exploring the area with the support of the Ministry of Tourism of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, I realized some things that would change my view of fashion forever.
Lesson One: Elegance is contextual, but quality is universal. The same outfit that works here in the wild would work on a restaurant terrace in Rome or on a yacht in Sardinia. That’s why? Because the quality is recognizable no matter where you are. Good clothes don’t get old, they don’t go out of fashion, they don’t become inappropriate.
Lesson Two: Luxury is not about having, it’s about choosing. I could have taken a suitcase with ten different outfits. But I chose carefully, pieces that will work together, that will withstand the conditions, that will be versatile (timeless and practical). As a result, I felt liberated, not burdened.
Lesson three: Nature is the best designer. Why does flax work? Because it has evolved over millions of years to be a functional fiber. Why do beige and brown tones work? Because these are colors that nature already uses. The best designers don’t invent, they discover what nature already knows.
Lesson Four: Authenticity cannot be bought, but it can be respected. ISAIA Napoli and Loro Piana are not just brands, they are carriers of traditions, guardians of crafts that would otherwise disappear. When you buy their products, you don’t just buy clothes, you support a philosophy, a way of life, values that are increasingly rare in the modern world.
WAKÜ LODGE: WHERE LUXURY MEETS NATURE
I cannot end this text without a special thank you to Mary and Wakü Lodge which is her home. This place is the perfect metaphor for everything I’ve been talking about, it’s luxury that’s not overstated, but truly felt without needing to be particularly emphasized. The entire property and lodge are made of natural materials, blend perfectly into the surroundings, yet offer comfort that is impeccable. When you want to connect with the world, you have Wi-Fi, and you have a TV. But, allow yourself to enjoy and don’t let technology distract you from pure nature.
And in that very pause, be assured that you will find presence. The presence of the moment, the presence of nature, the presence of yourself. Mary understands something that many in the hotel industry do not, which is the fact that true luxury is not in golden faucets, but in an authentic experience.
Every morning, you will wake up to the sound of water and exotic stories, as well as the animals that make Wakü Lodge their home. The breakfast was varied and just perfect with local fruits, different types of freshly baked breads, coffee that has soul. The staff are always there to help you and give you an amazing experience together led by the wonderful Mary.
BACK TO REALITY: WHAT I BROUGHT WITH ME
As I prepared to leave Canaima National Park, to return to a world where the ISAIA shirt might end up in a more formal setting, where the Loro Piana pants might be paired with other pieces, I was carrying something far more valuable than photographs.
I carry a new knowledge and understanding that fashion, in its noblest form, is not all about blindly following trends or impressing others. It’s about finding pieces that resonate with your life, that allow you to be the best version of yourself, that can support you in everything you do.
The ISAIA shirt is not just a shirt, it is a philosophy of Neapolitan elegance that believes that a man can be both elegant and lively, and at the same time sophisticated and warm. Loro Piana pants and espadrilles are not just clothes, they are a manifestation of the belief that real luxury is not overemphasized but is present to the extent that quality is recognized by the touch, not by the size of the logo.
And as I sit here for the last time, in a hammock overlooking a waterfall, dressed in clothes that survived the jungle and the fact that I came out even more beautiful from the experience, I feel grateful. Gratitude to the Ministry of Tourism of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela for making this experience possible for me. Gratitude to Mary who made me feel at home at the end of the world. Credit to the artisans in Naples and Northern Italy who created these beautiful pieces.
But most of all, gratitude for the fact that in a world where everything is becoming faster, cheaper, where it comes down to more and more disposable use, there are still people and brands who believe in a better, different way. A path that values quality over quantity, process over speed, and authenticity over imitation.
That’s the story I carry inside me. It is an elegance that does not seek applause or support from others because it is sure of its own worth. It is ISAIA Napoli in the heart of the Amazon: a unique, elegant and eternal experience.
Today I tried to convey to you the beauty of elegance and refinement in Canaima, the heart of the wilderness of South America, that’s why I prepared this outfit for you with a lot of love, I believe you will like it.
