June, like the previous months on the Mr.M blog, was dedicated to an unusual continent – South America, I showed you the countries I had the opportunity to visit and your numerous letters and reactions convinced me that I brightened up the months of April, May and June and that I inspired you to spend your vacation in one of the destinations in South America. At the very beginning of today’s travelogue, where I will try to convey to you the beauty of the CoolRooms Palacio de Atocha Hotel, a luxury gem in the heart of Madrid, I would like to thank the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism), local ministries of tourism, national tourism organizations, as well as other partners who selflessly supported my adventure in South America. With their help, travelogues from several countries were created, as well as numerous fashion stories that you had the opportunity to see in the previous 3 months on the Mr.M blog.

CoolRooms Palacio de Atocha: Meeting Madrid

When I arrived in Madrid, the first step through the doors of CoolRooms Palacio de Atocha was like entering my own little private world of jasmine scents and old wooden stairs. Located in the quarter de las Letras, among the cafés where Spanish writers used to debate poetry, the hotel seemed both intimate and opulent to me. This place does not resemble a large chain hotel, but a carefully decorated private villa with every detail thought out to provide you with comfort and inspiration during your stay in Madrid.

CoolRooms Palacio de Atocha is located in the heart of the “Barrio de las Letras”, a neighborhood that exudes the spirit of the golden age of Spanish literature. As I walked through the narrow, cobbled streets surrounded by typical Spanish facades, I felt that every brick told a story, from the place where Lope de Vega once held reading evenings to the cafes where the verses of Lope de Vega and Cervantes were debated over a cup of coffee. The hotel is located right at the crossroads of those colorful alleys and just a few steps from the main Atocha train station, meaning you can get there from anywhere in Spain, Europe or the world without any hassle.

On the one hand, the view through the large windows of the lobby reveals the lively atmosphere of the city, the movement of taxis and passers-by, while on the other hand, through the courtyard window, the wind and rustling palm leaves give the impression that you are somewhere far from the city bustle in your own private oasis. In the immediate vicinity is the Plaza Mayor, a historic square that represents the heart of Madrid.

Just a few minutes down the street, you come across the pedestrian zone around Puerta del Sol, home to Oso y el Madroño, kilometer zero and plenty of boutiques, cafes and street musicians. Thanks to the proximity of the main museums – Prado, Reina Sofía and Thyssen-Bornemisza, I knew that in the morning I would be able to enjoy the masterpieces of Velázquez, Picasso and Dali, and return to the hotel for lunch and continue my rest in the marble silence of the central courtyard.

Navigating the city is extremely easy thanks to the location. The Atocha-Renfe metro station is ten steps away, which allows quick connections to every corner of Madrid. However, the greatest charm is hidden in the district itself with a large number of small bookstores, galleries with contemporary art, interesting boutiques and cafes that you discover by chance and become your favorite “secret places” in Madrid. Considering all this, I could say that the location of the CoolRooms Palacio de Atocha Hotel is the perfect combination of comfort and adventure: you have both history and the modern urban pulse that makes Madrid unique at your fingertips.

Lobby and common areas of the hotel

Entering CoolRooms Palacio de Atocha is a real experience. As I slowly opened the door, I was greeted by an impressive lobby several meters high, with massive plasterwork that creates the feeling of being in a carefully restored 19th century palace with a touch of modern minimalism.

In the very center of the lobby there is a small winter garden with a swimming pool and greenery, pergolas are skilfully combined with modern metal elements, and wooden deckchairs and comfortable armchairs invite you to take a break. While the friendly staff worked through the check-in process, I decided to take a seat and noticed discreet, elegant details: the latest issue of an interior design magazine, the scent of jasmine, fruit water with a few circles of lemon floating in it. Every guest is welcomed here with the idea of ​​making them feel special.

The evening lighting of the lobby creates an intimate, almost cinematic scene. Lights stream down the columns, and nearby walls with preserved stucco cast soft shadows. Guests gather at the cocktail bar, where the bartender prepares classic Spanish cocktails, but also a modern version of sangria with berries. That moment when you are snuggled up in a comfortable armchair with a drink in your hand and a wonderful view is hard to describe – you have to experience it.

Master Suite: My corner of luxury

The rooms at the CoolRooms Palacio de Atocha Hotel are all unique, but the Master Suite really deserves a special story. It covers more than 70 (up to 110) square meters and is designed as a two-story apartment in which the living room and bedroom area act almost as separate apartments.

• Living room: A huge sofa covered with soft cushions, a dark oak coffee table and a series of small details such as antique armchairs and a modern lamp that casts a warm light. I spent the afternoon there with my laptop, because the wireless internet was fast and reliable.
• 2 Bedrooms: King-size beds with soft mattresses and fine bedspreads seem to be placed there just for you. The morning sun through the tall windows illuminates the white wall with the artworks that decorate the rooms.

• Bathroom: A real little spa experience. The rain shower is perfect for afternoon relaxation after a day of walking around the city. Premium cosmetics with a mild citrus scent should definitely be tried.
• Wardrobe: Spacious with shelves for a suitcase, but there is also a small wardrobe hidden there, convenient when you stay for several days and bring several different outfits for the trip.

The whole suite exudes a combination of classic and contemporary: wooden floor, whitewashed walls and eclectic pieces of furniture that create a feeling of home. At night, I often sat on the edge of the bed and looked at the warm tones of the walls, thinking how rarely I have such comfort when traveling.

CoolRooms Palacio de Atocha: Madrid in the palm of your hand

One of the biggest advantages of staying at CoolRooms Palacio de Atocha is the fact that every important part of Madrid is literally “in the palm of your hand”. Walking from the hotel to the Atocha station, I got to know a bit of the atmosphere of local markets like the Mercado de Antón Martín, where colorful stalls with tropical fruits, fresh vegetables and regional cheeses are a real feast for the eyes and all the senses. Visitors from Serbia and the Balkans are often looking for authentic local flavors, so this is the ideal place for the first encounter with “jamón ibérico” and homemade “tortilla de patatas”.

The next morning I went to Retiro Park, less than a 20-minute stroll through the tree-lined streets. I rented a boat there, looked at the statue of Alfonso XII. That part of town, filled with art installations, impromptu performances by classical musicians and colorful book stands, feels like a natural extension of what the hotel offers, a real intimate urban oasis.

For art lovers, a pleasant walk leads to the Prado Museum, where you can spend the day looking for works by Goya and Velázquez, then return the same way for an afternoon rest at the hotel. An alternative is a shorter route to the Reina Sofía, a contemporary gallery in a former hospital, where I found Picasso’s Guernica, an experience to remember.

If you want nightlife, La Latina is a five minute walk away. There, in the evening, I wandered from one tapas bar to another, tasted “berenjenas con miel” and every now and then stopped at something new, simply because in that part of the city everything is alive and brilliantly lit. Gran Vía, a few minutes away, brings cinemas, musicals and the neon glow of Madrid at night. Every route is possible on foot, and returning to the hotel feels like entering your own living room, it’s so close and intimate.

CoolRooms Palacio de Atocha: Personalized service

Already during check-in, the CoolRooms Palacio de Atocha hotel staff starts with small but significant gestures: when they saw my interest in Spanish cuisine, they suggested some hidden taverns in La Latina that I wouldn’t have found in the guidebook. The concierge reserved a table in advance in a small restaurant where the locals expected only Spanish speakers, thanks to that, I experienced authentic flavors and a pleasant conversation with the owner. Every morning I received a short “daily proposal”, whether it was a contemporary art exhibition, a jazz quartet concert or a minimally-research tour of the retro parts of the city.

Special attention was paid to the details: every evening I was greeted on the bed with a piece of paper with a “good night” message, and when I arrived at the apartment, I was always greeted by chocolates. When I asked for an extra pillow, they brought two – because, as they said, “sometimes one isn’t enough”.

Restaurant El Patio de Atocha

Although the hotel is not advertised as a gastronomic center, the restaurant within the hotel palace is a pleasant surprise. The dishes are prepared with local ingredients and it is noticeable that the chef appreciates simplicity without excessive pomp:

• Breakfast: A wide selection of pastries from the local bakery, homemade jams, freshly squeezed orange juice and an omelette with mushrooms and aromatic herbs. This is where you can feel the authenticity of Spanish morning cuisine.
• Lunch and dinner: Menus choose every day two fingers of pork prosciutto, spicy eggplant with honey, and even creamy seafood risotto. Everything is tasty, dosed, without heavy sauces that would hide the real flavors.
• Bar by the pool: When you want a light snack, there are tapas: fried calamari in blanding flour, mini-burgers with goat cheese and sandwiches with ham. Cocktails are modern, with an emphasis on local spirits.

The ambiance of the restaurant makes it a pleasant place for breakfast with a business meeting, but also for a romantic dinner under the stars.

Lunch and dinner at El Patio de Atocha restaurant

When you step into El Patio de Atocha, you immediately understand that food here is not just a meal but a ritual, the preparation of each dish is based on top quality local ingredients, masterfully combined to awaken all the senses. The restaurant is open every day from 13:30 to 16:30 for lunch and from 19:30 to 23:00 for dinner, which is perfectly timed for a light Spanish rhythm that is savored in every bite.

For lunch, the menu offers light but very satisfying appetizers like grilled confit artichokes topped with olive oil dressing and finely chopped parsley. These artichokes are lightly smoked and perfectly juicy, so their tender texture prepares you for the main course. Among the main specialties, the risotto with shrimp and bacon stands out, creamy and full of flavor, the shells give the aromas of the sea, while the pieces of crispy bacon introduce a smoky contrast that will surprise you again and again. Vegetarians are offered a variant of risotto with roasted eggplant and young peas, refreshed with a drop of lemon.

In addition, you can complete your lunch with tuna tartar with guacamole, wakame seaweed and thin leaves of lotus root. This fusion of Asian and Mexican notes brings striking vibrancy to any meal. Additionally, freshly baked bread from a local bakery cuts through the richness of the sauce.

For those who want something more informal during the day, from 12:00 to 20:00 the menu includes tapas and sandwiches—a mini goat cheese burger, fried calamari and toasties with prosciutto and Manchego cheese served with a choice of local wines or cocktails. These quick meals are ideal for a short break between walking to the museum and returning to the backyard oasis.

The evening part of the restaurant exudes a more intimate atmosphere: the interior hall is stylishly lit, creating a soft golden light that spills over the wood-clad walls. Dinner begins with a careful selection of appetizers: steak carpaccio with arugula, grana padana and homemade pesto sauce, or pumpkin cream soup with fried almonds and a dollop of creamy yogurt. For the main course, you can choose between carefully baked fish of the day, often salmon or sea bass, seasoned with rosemary, white wine and olive oil, or lamb from the oven with new potatoes and aromatic herbs.

Finally, desserts such as boiled caramel with sea salt or citrus tiramisu with fresh mint will delight those with a sweet tooth, while a selection of cheeses from the Spanish interior (Manchego, Idiazábal) offer the perfect balance of flavors with a full glass of red wine.

All in all, the meals at El Patio de Atocha are not for the faint of heart, but rather an enjoyment of combining traditional recipes with modern techniques. Every detail, from the choice of olive oil to the tax method of presentation, has been designed to make each bite a small feat of fine cuisine in the heart of Madrid.

CoolRooms Palacio de Atocha: Garden and small oases, true relaxation zones

The central garden with swimming pool feels like you have left the city, if only for a moment. If you visit this hotel during the summer period and when the temperatures are high, you can cool off and enjoy on the wooden deckchairs in the silence, interrupted only by the chirping of birds and the whispering of the fountain.

It is possible to book short yoga or pilates sessions with a guide at several times during the day. I haven’t tried them, but I’ve heard that guests seem refreshed and ready for new city adventures afterwards.

CoolRooms Palacio de Atocha: Business corner and events

For business guests, the hotel offers a small conference room with natural light and modern technology for presentations. When I was sending emails from “this business” area, I felt how useful it is to have a work corner outside the room where it is quiet and comfortable for the needs of business travelers. In the evening, the same space can be turned into a small cocktail or private reception area, which is quite rare for a hotel of this size.

CoolRooms Palacio de Atocha: Why will I return?

When I think of my travels in Europe, CoolRooms Palacio de Atocha will have a special place in my heart. I have visited Paris, London, Rome and other metropolises many times, but no hotel has managed to combine history, design and the warmth of home, as this small boutique hotel in Madrid has done. Every time I think about booking another one, I realize that it’s hard to beat going from the hustle and bustle to the quiet of a charmingly decorated courtyard, or the feeling that the staff actually remembers your name and habits.

I will be back for a few key things: first, the authentic warmth of the staff, they are no longer just waiters and receptionists, but friends who have local secrets and are happy to share them. Second, because of the rooms where every detail has been carefully chosen, you feel like you are absorbing a piece of Spanish culture through the furniture, colors and scents. And finally, due to the location, the changes of ambience in a short time between cultural jewels, colorful streets and hotel peace make every morning and evening a special story.

For travelers looking for more than just a room, and wanting to experience Madrid at its core, this is a place to remember. I will come back because it is my corner of Madrid, home when I am away from home and inspiration when I want to feel the pulse of one of the most exciting cities in Europe.
