My dear fashionistas, welcome to another fashion adventure on the Mr.M blog! When Italian luxury minimalism meets the majesty of Chinese imperial architecture, a story emerges that transcends the boundaries of fashion and culture. My trip through Asia in cooperation with The United Nations World Tourism Organization – UN Tourism, was an incredible opportunity to explore how the timeless elegance of luxury brands fits into the context of centuries of history. As I strode through the Temple of Heaven and strolled along the Summer Palace Lake, I wore pieces characterized by superior production and respect for craftsmanship, values shared by both Italy and China, two countries with deep shoemaking and textile heritage.

This post isn’t just about choosing footwear and clothing for photos. It is the story of brands that have built their heritage for decades, even centuries, through dedication to quality, innovation and authenticity. From Italian Alpine valleys to Portuguese shoe workshops, from Swiss watchmaking ateliers to the French Riviera, this is a journey through handicrafts that transcend passing trends and become part of our personal history.

LORO PIANA: WHEN FIBERS BECOME ART

Before I start talking about the specific pieces of my outfits today, I have to tell you a story about the brand that dominated both of my outfits in Beijing. Loro Piana is not just a brand, it is a philosophy of living that celebrates the best that nature has to offer. If there is one brand that represents the concept of “quiet luxury”, it is Loro Piana.

The story of this Italian house begins in the early 1800s, when the Loro Piana family started the wool trade in Triver, a small commune in the mountainous northern region of Piedmont. This was no ordinary textile trade, but back then the family demonstrated an uncompromising commitment to quality, selecting only the finest wool from local farms. In 1924, Pietro Loro Piana, who had an engineering education, founded the company Ing. Loro Piana & C. in the town of Quarona. This moment marked the formal birth of a brand that would become synonymous with the most luxurious natural fibers in the world.

The real transformation took place under the leadership of Pietro’s nephew Franz, who took over the company in the 1940s. Franco Loro Piana was a visionary who realized that the Italian weaving tradition could compete with the best in the world. In the 1950s and 1960s, he began exporting high-end fabrics to Europe, America and Japan. However, the real moment of revolution came in the 1970s, when Franco’s sons, Sergio and Pier Luigi Loro Piana, took over the company.

The Piana brothers were obsessed with the idea of finding the finest natural materials on the planet. Their search took them to Mongolia, where they formed partnerships with local herders who raise goats for cashmere production. They talked to farms in Australia and New Zealand about extra fine merino wool fiber. But the most fascinating story is related to vicuña “fiber of the gods” as many call it today. Vicuña is the rarest and most expensive natural fiber in the world, it comes from the animals of the same name that live in the Andes at altitudes over 4000 meters. In 1997, Loro Piana reached an agreement with the Peruvian government and local communities that these fibers could be collected exclusively from living animals, making the brand a pioneer in sustainable luxury fashion.

What makes the Loro Piana brand unique is not only the quality of the materials, but also the fact that the company controls the entire production chain, from fiber selection to the final product. Unlike most luxury brands that entrust production to third parties, Loro Piana does everything in Italy, in its own factories. They produce five million meters of fabric per year, and every step of the process is overseen by their team of experts. This vertical integration enables them to maintain unwavering quality standards.

The turning point for this brand was in 2013, when Loro Piana became part of the LVMH group, but despite this, the company retained its independence in terms of production and design. Today, with more than 170 boutiques worldwide, Loro Piana represents the pinnacle of Italian craftsmanship and minimalist elegance without logos and distinctive patterns.

FIRST OUTFIT: MONOCHROMATIC HARMONY IN THE TEMPLE OF HEAVEN, BEIJING

The Temple of Heaven, or Tiantan as the Chinese call it, is one of the most impressive examples of imperial Chinese architecture. This 15th-century complex, where Chinese emperors performed annual rituals to pray for a good harvest, perfectly represents the Chinese philosophy of harmony between heaven and earth. Color and symbolism are key here, such as sky blue glazed ceramics on the roofs, marble altars, precise geometry, all of which create an atmosphere of spirituality and order.

OUTFIT 1

Silk T-Shirt: Loro Piana

Watch: Appella

Sunglasses: Façonnable

Trousers: Loro Piana

Tassel Loafer: Carlos Santos

Loro Piana Carlo trousers detail showing perfect drape and Italian tailoring craftsmanship in neutral beige palette
Luxury casual menswear styling - monochromatic beige tones with Loro Piana textiles and Carlos Santos handmade shoes

For such a strong and symbolic location, I opted for a completely monochromatic approach in neutral tones. Beige and camel shades are my go-to when I want to achieve a refined yet unfussy elegance. The first piece was a Loro Piana silk thread short sleeved top in pure beige. Silk thread is perhaps the most luxurious material for a summer wardrobe, it naturally regulates temperature, absorbs moisture, and has a characteristic shine that gently reflects light. Loro Piana uses only the finest silk thread, obtained from the Mulberry silkworm, and each gram of this material is the result of more than 2000 years of perfecting silk production.

The trousers I wore are model Carlo from the Loro Piana collection, completely straight, with a classic cut that does not succumb to trends. These trousers perfectly illustrate the Loro Piana philosophy: simplicity that hides complexity. Their cut is the result of decades of experience in the Italian tailoring tradition, while the material provides exceptional comfort throughout the day. These pants are designed to look just as good with loafers as they do with sneakers, making them perfect for travel.

Façonnable: Riviera Elegance on French Glasses

When we talk about French fashion, most people immediately think of the big Parisian houses: Dior, Saint Laurent, Hermès. But there is one brand that carries the spirit of the French Riviera, where the Mediterranean meets casual elegance, and that is Façonnable.

Jean Goldberg, the founder of Façonnable, was a master tailor who opened his first store in Nice in 1950, on the famous rue Paradis. At that time, Nice was the center of European glamour, during the Cannes Film Festival, Hollywood stars were looking for the best tailor to make them tuxedos and evening dresses for the red carpet. Goldberg’s shop quickly became a must-stop for everyone, but Cary Grant and Tony Curtis were regular customers, and his unique style of classic tailoring with a modern twist became recognizable.

A few years later, in 1961, when Jean Goldberg retired, his son Albert took over the business. Albert was a visionary of a different kind. After visiting the Brooks Brothers store in New York in the 1960s, he realized the future in ready-to-wear fashion. He began producing a small collection of ready-to-wear for men, maintaining his father’s focus on quality but adding the vibrant designs and colors characteristic of the Riviera. In 1973, boutiques opened along the Cote d’Azur in Monte Carlo, Cannes, Saint-Tropez.

What is particularly fascinating is Façonnable’s 1975 collaboration with Loro Piano. Together, they created “Façorain”, an invisible membrane that allows luxury wools and cashmeres to be waterproof and windproof while retaining their texture and permeability. This innovation showed that Façonnable was not only about style, but also about technical innovation.

The sunglasses I wore are the Pantos model from Façonnable’s collection. These glasses are a perfect example of what Façonnable does best, combining classic design with modern functionality. The Pantos shape is timeless, with a slightly rounded frame that suits most face shapes. The acetate frame is crafted with attention to detail, and the lenses provide full UV protection. When you look at them, you can see the DNA of the French Riviera, a timeless elegance without pretension, a style that works just as well on a yacht as it does in the city.

Carlos Santos: Portugal’s Shoemaking Heritage

On my feet I wore moccasins from the Carlos Santos workshop, specifically the Whindersson 1989 model, tasseled moccasins in the finest camel suede leather. To explain why these moccasins are special, I have to tell you the story of Carlos Santos and the Portuguese shoemaking tradition.

Carlos Alberto Rodrigues dos Santos was only 14 years old when he started working in the offices of the Zarco factory in São João da Madeira, a town in the north of Portugal known for its shoemaking tradition. But young Carlos was not interested in office work, he kept running away to the floor of the factory where the workers made shoes by hand. He was fascinated by the process, passionate about shoes, hardworking and ambitious. For him, fashion was not superfluous, it was a way to make life more beautiful.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Carlos was already traveling the world in search of inspiration. He visited fashion shows, bought shoes from the best manufacturers, but not to wear them. He returned to Portugal and took them apart, studying every technique, every stitch, every detail of construction. He believed that Portuguese craftsmen could reach the level of the best Italian and British manufacturers, they just needed the right opportunity and knowledge.

Close-up of Carlos Santos Whindersson 1989 tassel loafers in camel suede with handcrafted tassels paired with Loro Piana trousers

Carlos gradually progressed from sales to management, becoming a partner in Zarac and then the sole owner. Then, in 2010, he launched his own line under the name Carlos Santos. Today, the company employs over 100 workers, and their footwear is sold worldwide in Germany, France, the Netherlands, Japan, Belgium, the United States, and the Middle East.

What makes Carlos Santos special is their dedication to the Goodyear Welted manufacturing method. This is a manual technique where machines only serve as an aid, and 80% of the work is done manually. Each shoe goes through more than 200 manual operations before it is considered finished. This process allows not only superior quality, but also the ability for the shoes to be repaired and last for decades.

The Whindersson I wore are tassel loafers, a style of shoe that originated in America in the 1950s, but which Carlos Santos interprets with Portuguese precision. The tassels are handmade from the same leather as the shoes themselves, while the leather likely comes from renowned French tanners such as D’Annonay or De Puy. A warm camel shade, it blended perfectly with my monochromatic palette, creating a fluid line from head to toe.

Appella: Swiss Watchmaking Precision

I was wearing a watch that will be present in both outfits: Appella model L901B63M from the Gent collection. This is a watch that embodies the Swiss watchmaking tradition, but in a more affordable range than the big Swiss houses.

The story of the Appella brand begins in 1943 when Swiss watchmaker Paul Glocker founded the brand. Glocker worked at the Ebossa factory, where Georges Frederic Roskopf invented the revolutionary Roskopf movements, simple yet reliable watch movements that were the cutting-edge product of Swiss craftsmanship at the time. Inspired by this tradition, Glocker founded Appella with a vision to continue the legacy of excellence.

Luxury men's travel style with Loro Piana silk ensemble and Appella Swiss Made L901B63M watch at Temple of Heaven

The name Appella comes from an asteroid discovered by Russian astronomer Benjamin Pawlowitsch in 1922 in Algeria, symbolically linking the watch brand to the precise, mathematical nature of astronomy. In 1963, the “Manufacture de Montres Appella SA” was founded in Granges/Grenchen, the same place where the Ebossa factory was located.

Today, Appella is owned by ADRIATICA PR & A Watch Sagl, which has a long tradition in watchmaking. Under their leadership, Appella experienced a renaissance, combining classic Swiss quality with modern design. What characterises Appella watches is the use of sapphire glass that protects the dial, this material is known for its exceptional resistance to scratches and flawless transparency that reveals the beauty of the watch.

Appella L901B63M Gent collection Swiss watch with sapphire crystal glass paired with Loro Piana beige silk t-shirt detail

The model I wore has a classic design with a legible dial, which makes it perfect for everyday wear as well as for more formal occasions. The Swiss quartz movement guarantees precision, while the leather bracelet adds warmth to the metal case. In China, where mechanical watches are valued as a status symbol, wearing a Swiss watch is an expression of respect for craftsmanship and tradition.

SECOND OUTFIT: STRIPED ELEGANCE IN THE SUMMER PALACE

The Summer Palace, or Yiheyuan, covers 2.9 square kilometers and is a masterpiece of Chinese landscape architecture. Built for the imperial court as a summer resort, this palace is a place where architecture merged with nature – Kunming Lake, Longevity Hill, numerous bridges and pavilions create a harmonious whole. Here, nature is not just a backdrop, but an integral part of the experience.

For this setting, I decided on something that retains the monochromatic elegance, but introduces a subtle print – stripes. My Loro Piana Silk Thread T-Shirt with Beige Drab Stripes is a perfect example of how to introduce visual interest without compromising refinement. The stripes are vertical and very subtle, creating dynamics through different shades of the same color. The silk thread, as in the first outfit, provides comfort and a luxurious feeling next to the skin.

OUTFIT 2

T-Shirt: Loro Piana

Watch: Appella

Trousers: Loro Piana

Trousers: Carlos Santos

Loro Piana striped silk textile with Carlos Santos Lonnie 1987 STB white leather sneakers on Summer Palace promenade

The trousers, also made of Loro Piana silk thread in a pure drab color, continued the story of monochromatic elegance. Drab is one of those colors that Loro Piana understands perfectly, it is not beige, it is not gray, but something in between, a color that is warm and sophisticated at the same time. Silk pants are an unusual choice because most people think of silk as a material for shirts or dresses, but Loro Piana pioneered the use of silk for casual and sportswear. Their silk fabric is tough enough for structured pieces, but retains that signature silky sheen.

Carlos Santos Sneakers: When Sports Shoes Become a Symbol of Luxury

The Lonnie 1987 STB is a leather sneaker that represents Carlos Santos’ answer to the luxury sneaker phenomenon. While sneakers were traditionally sports shoes, today they have become a central element of men’s wardrobe, but often with a lack of quality. Carlos Santos approached the creation of sneakers with the same philosophy as formal footwear: premium leather, hand-crafting and exceptional attention to detail.

Carlos Santos Lonnie 1987 STB model detail - white luxury leather sneakers with beige accents paired with Loro Piana silk trousers

The Lonnie model is an elegant interpretation of a low sneaker with clean lines. These sneakers are made of full leather, premium quality calf leather, with a leather lining that allows the foot to breathe. The rubber sole is flexible yet durable, providing comfort all day long. The beige color of the sneakers with the details in the brown shade perfectly fit into my palette, creating a modern contrast with the silk fabrics.

These sneakers are proof that quality and craftsmanship can exist even in the most casual pieces of clothing. While many luxury brands have launched sneakers that cost more for the name than the quality, Carlos Santos maintains its integrity, each sneaker is still the product of decades of shoemaking experience.

LUXURY FASHION PHILOSOPHY: QUALITY OVER QUANTITY

As I walked through these historic sites, I wore pieces that together represent an investment that many would consider extravagant. But this outfit, like all the ones I present on my blog, is not about offensive labels or current trends. It’s a philosophy that values quality over quantity, craftsmanship over mass production, timeless classic style over fast fashion cycles.

A Loro Piana silk thread t-shirt can last for decades if properly maintained. Carlos Santos shoes can be repaired and last for generations. An Appella watch, with its Swiss movement, can last a lifetime. Façonnable glasses, with a high quality acetate frame, will not break after a few months. These are the pieces that become part of your life, that carry the stories of your travels, that gain patina and character over time.

Loro Piana striped silk t-shirt in beige-taupe tones combined with taupe silk trousers - monochromatic men's elegance

STYLING: THE ART OF MONOCHROMATIC COMBINATIONS

One of the biggest misconceptions in men’s fashion is that monochromatic combinations only mean boring combinations. Conversely, creating an interesting outfit in the same color palette is one of the most sophisticated skills in styling. When eliminating color contrast, you need to focus on textures, proportions, fit and quality of materials.

In the first outfit, the game was between different finishes in the beige-camel spectrum: matte silk T-shirt, structured cotton or wool pants, shiny leather moccasins, acetate eyeglass frames. Each material reflects light differently, creating depth through texture rather than color.

In the second outfit, the stripes on the T-shirt introduce a vertical dynamic that visually elongates the torso, while the silk pants fall with the fluidity that is characteristic of this material. Beige sneakers add a fresh element, but remain in the same tonal family through brown details.

CONCLUSION: WHEN FASHION BECOME A BRIDGE BETWEEN CULTURES

This trip to Beijing, made possible thanks to the United Nations World Tourism Organization – UN Tourism, was more than just photographing outfits in beautiful locations. It was an experience of cultural exchange where Italian craftsmanship, French elegance, Portuguese shoemaking tradition and Swiss precision met Chinese history and architecture.

As I stood in the Temple of Heaven, surrounded by tourists from all over the world, I realized that the clothes we wear are not just there to decorate our bodies. They are expressions of identity, values, respect for tradition and craftsmanship. A Loro Piana shirt that traveled from Italy to distant Beijing, Carlos Santos moccasins that were handmade in a Portuguese workshop, Façonnable glasses that carry the spirit of the French Riviera, an Appella watch that carries Swiss heritage, each of these pieces is a story in itself.

Yiheyuan Summer Palace Beijing - luxury men's casual outfit with Loro Piana silk ensemble and Appella Swiss watch

Fashion, in its most authentic form, is not about blindly following trends or buying the latest collections every season. It’s about building a personal wardrobe that reflects who we are, what we value and how we want to present ourselves to the world. These are pieces that transcend time and geography, which look just as appropriate in Beijing as in Berlin, Paris, Belgrade or Milan.

I hope you gained not only inspiration for an outfit of your own, but also a deeper sense of respect for the brands and artisans behind these pieces. In the world of fast fashion and current trends, there are still houses and workshops that preserve the tradition of quality. And it is a story worth telling, dressing up and living.

Today I tried to convey to you the beauty of autumn elegance and refinement, that’s why I prepared this outfit for you with a lot of love, I believe you will like it. If you have any questions, comments, suggestions or any message for me, you can write me below in the comments. Hello Marko! Your Beijing adventure perfectly captures what I love most about luxury fashion, especially the stories behind each piece. The way you connected Loro Piana’s Italian craftsmanship with Chinese imperial architecture is brilliant. I’ve been eyeing those Carlo trousers for months now, and your detailed explanation of their construction has convinced me to finally invest. The monochromatic styling is incredibly sophisticated without being boring. How do you maintain silk garments during extensive travel? I imagine Beijing’s climate can be quite challenging for delicate fabrics. Your content always goes beyond surface-level styling and really educates us about heritage and craftsmanship.… Read more »

Marko, quel article magnifique!

Hi Marko! As someone who works in textile engineering, your detailed explanation of Loro Piana’s vertical integration and quality control really resonated with me. Most people don’t understand that true luxury comes from controlling every step of production. The fact that they produce five million meters of fabric annually while maintaining such high standards is remarkable. Your Carlos Santos Lonnie sneakers prove that even casual footwear can embody craftsmanship. The Goodyear welted construction is something I wish more people understood and valued. These are investments that last decades, not disposable fashion. Excellent work documenting this journey!

Hallo Marko!

Marko, your post is absolutely brilliant! The way you weave together fashion history, brand heritage, and travel storytelling is unmatched. I’ve been following luxury menswear for years, but I learned so much about Façonnable’s collaboration with Loro Piana on the Façorain technology. That 1975 innovation was ahead of its time. Your monochromatic approach at the Summer Palace shows true mastery of styling playing with textures instead of colors requires real skill. The vertical stripes on the second outfit add just enough visual interest. This is the kind of educational fashion content we need more of. Keep inspiring us!

Hi Marko! Your Beijing series is phenomenal. The level of detail you provide about each brand’s history is impressive from Carlos Santos studying shoes in the 1970s to Appella’s connection to Swiss watchmaking precision. I particularly love how you styled silk trousers in the second outfit. Most men are intimidated by silk pants, but you make them look effortlessly sophisticated. The Temple of Heaven backdrop is stunning, and your beige-camel color story complements the architecture beautifully. Could you share some tips on building a capsule wardrobe based on this “investment pieces” philosophy? Your content is truly next level!

Hallo Marko! Adoro come hai abbinato tutto in tonalità beige-cammello, dimostra grande sensibilità stilistica. Complimenti!
