My dear travellers and lovers of unusual journeys, welcome to the new series of travelogues on the Mr.M blog. After numerous trips around the world and stays in the most luxurious hotels, I rarely have what I would call an unusual hotel experience. However, my recent stay at the Mandarin Oriental Qianmen Beijing, which opened its doors on September 2, 2024, completely redefined my understanding of luxury accommodation. This latest jewel in the crown of the Mandarin Oriental chain represents the second hotel of this prestigious group in the Chinese capital, but its concept is completely unique, not only in Beijing, but in the entire world of luxury hotels.
AN ARCHITECTURAL PEARL IN HISTORICAL CONTEXT
Located in the heart of the traditional hutong district along Beijing’s central axis, which was recently inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, the hotel is a masterpiece of restoration architecture. With just 42 meticulously restored courtyard houses (siheyuan) spread across eight authentic hutong alleys, Mandarin Oriental Qianmen has managed to achieve the seemingly impossible, which is to preserve the soul of the 600-year-old neighborhood while transforming it into a haven of contemporary modern luxury for which the Mandarin Oriental hotel chain is known.
Already upon entering through the stone and wooden decorated main entrance, I was greeted by an incredible fusion of Chinese tradition and modern details. The main lobby with its open courtyard and traditional fish pond simultaneously transported me to the era of Imperial Beijing, while the discreet contemporary design elements reminded me that I was in the 21st century. Joe Cheng, founder of the award-winning Chinese architecture studio Cheng Chung Design, behind this monumental restoration, managed to preserve every original brick and tile, maintaining the authentic structure and height of the buildings according to the original plans.
GRAND COURTYARD APARTMENT: THE POETRY OF SPACE
My home during the stay was the spectacular Grand Courtyard Suite, more spacious than many luxury homes with its impressive 196 to 236 square meters. This one-bedroom apartment represents the pinnacle of modern living while respecting the hutong tradition. High ceilings and a spacious private courtyard add to the feeling of spaciousness and natural light, while many rooms also include traditional tea rooms for entertaining and relaxing in style.
Upon first entering the apartment, I was enchanted by the harmonious fusion of traditional Chinese elements with contemporary design. Wooden beams, textured oatmeal-hued walls with touches of petrol blue, brushed brass details and hand-crafted ceramics created an ambience that was both warm and sophisticated. Underfloor heating for the winter months, sliding doors that open onto a private patio and the addition of modern technology including Bose Bluetooth speakers, Dyson hair dryers and a full mini bar made my stay perfectly comfortable.
I was especially delighted by the “Make-Your-Own Cocktail Kit”, which allowed me to create personalized cocktails in the privacy of my suite, as well as the luxurious Frédéric Malle toiletries in an elegant box, which, on the advice of my butler, I took as a souvenir. Spacious bathrooms with walk-in showers and bathtubs overlooking the courtyard created a spa experience in the privacy of the room. Every detail, from the silk sheets to the artwork by local artists, has been carefully designed to add to the overall experience.
GASTRONOMIC JOURNEY THROUGH YAN GARDEN BY CHEF FEI
My culinary adventures began at the YAN GARDEN BY CHEF FEI restaurant, which was awarded a Michelin star. This elegant restaurant, located in a traditional hutong courtyard, offers superior Cantonese and Chaozhou cuisine prepared with the finest seasonal ingredients. During the two dinners I spent here, I had the opportunity to explore a rich palette of flavors through carefully designed tasting menus.
I especially remember the dinner we had on September 16, 2025, the menu of which I analyzed in detail, since I am always particularly curious when I get to know new and unusual cuisines. We started with a series of appetizers that showcased the variety of seafood and traditional preparation techniques. The Chilled Water Bamboo Shoot Roll with Sea Urchin was a refreshingly elegant starter, followed by the unusual Chilled Pickled Mini Radish which showed a mastery of flavor balance. The Chaoshan-style Smoked Ma You showcased authentic regional flavors, while the Chilled Jellyfish Terrine was a true textural symphony.
The pièce de résistance of the evening was the Caramelized Superior Pork Char Siu, a perfection of sweet and salty flavors with an incredible melt-in-your-mouth texture. The fresh crab and fish soup was refined and very tasty, a perfect transition to the main courses.
The main courses were a true demonstration of Chef Fei’s skill. Chaoshan-style Crispy Sea Cucumber transformed this often challenging ingredient into a delicacy, while Chef Fei’s Signature Deep-fried Pigeon was an absolute triumph, crispy skin, juicy meat and perfectly seasoned. The Pan-Fried Australian Ribeye with Chili and Szechuan Pepper combined Western ingredients with Chinese techniques in a masterful way.
The Wok-fried Fresh Lily Bulb with Sugar Snap Peas was a refreshing vegetarian side dish, while the Yangchun Noodle with Shrimp and Chicken Broth was a rhapsody of flavors on a plate, so simple yet just perfectly executed. The dinner was rounded off with Classic Cantonese Sweet Red Bean Soup with Aged Tangerine Peel, a traditional dessert that was both nostalgic and sophisticated.
VICINI: ITALIAN ELEGANCE IN A HUTONG SURROUNDING
My two dinners at the VICINI restaurant provided a completely different but equally impressive dining experience. This colorful and stylish Italian bistro, which occupies the site of a former textile factory, with a terrace overlooking the surrounding hutong rooftops, has quickly become a favorite destination not only for hotel guests but also for local residents.
Under the leadership of the Italian Chef Luongo, who perfected his skills at the prestigious Paul Bocuse Institute and worked in several Michelin restaurants, VICINI serves authentic regional Italian dishes prepared from the finest ingredients. The handmade pastas were masterpieces of texture and taste, creative pizzas with traditional bases but innovative toppings, and their fantastic Fiorentina steaks and succulent roast saddle of lamb were among the best I’ve tasted outside of Italy. The romantic atmosphere under the elegant lights in the evening made every dinner unforgettable.
THE SPA: TEMPLE OF WELLNESS
The Spa at Mandarin Oriental Qianmen Hotel is much more than just a spa, it is a sanctuary dedicated to holistic wellness that draws inspiration from ancient Chinese medicine. It won the prestigious China’s Best Hotel Spa 2025 award from the World Spa Awards, which should come as no surprise when you experience the high level of service and treatments that can be found on offer here.
The spa center includes private treatment rooms, a traditional Tea House, Qiyuan Healing Space dedicated to the harmony of body and mind, as well as a state-of-the-art fitness center open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. I was particularly impressed by the team of experts, including Geng Xin, an accredited Traditional Chinese Medicine professional with over 20 years of experience, who developed the unique “Tai Chi Holographic Extreme Therapy”.
During my stay, I enjoyed a traditional tui massage which helped my digestion and general energy circulation. I also attended a sound healing session with Kiwi, a certified sound healer who masterfully uses gongs and Tibetan bowls to achieve deep relaxation. After the treatment, the time spent in the Tea Room overlooking the peaceful courtyard was perfect for contemplation and complete relaxation.
TIAO BAR AND MAPLE LOUNGE: PLACES OF SOCIAL MEETINGS
TIAO, a contemporary cocktail bar located in a traditional hutong alley, has quickly become one of the most sought-after spots in Beijing, often with long queues during the evening hours. The bar offers innovative cocktails inspired by the colorful characters and stories of Beijing, with upscale bar food that perfectly complements the drinks.
The Maple Lounge, named after the hotel’s hundred-year-old maple tree, is a more intimate and elegant space where I enjoyed the finest Chinese and Oriental teas. Traditional afternoon tea served in a sophisticated interior or peaceful courtyard was one of the best experiences during my stay at the Mandarin Oriental Qianmen Beijing Hotel.
UNIQUE ACTIVITIES AND LOCATION
Mandarin Oriental Qianmen offers a rich program of activities that allows guests to get to know Chinese culture more deeply. From tai chi classes with Eric, founder of the Beijing Sanfeng Taijiquan Club and official coach of the 2008 Olympics, to workshops in kite making, paper cutting, calligraphy and siheyuan courtyard puzzles, each day offered new opportunities for learning and exploration.
I particularly enjoyed the private hutong tour organized by the hotel’s marketing team. During this tour, I learned fascinating stories about Caochang Hutong and the cultural heritage of ancient Beijing. The hotel also organizes the “Central Axis City Cycling” tour: a 20-kilometer cycling route connecting 14 historical landmarks of Beijing.
The hotel’s location is truly privileged, right in the heart of Beijing, just steps away from the Forbidden City, Qianmen Street and the Temple of Heaven. Tiananmen Square is only a 10-minute walk away, while modern shopping destinations such as Wangfujing are easily accessible. Despite its central location, the hotel provides an oasis of peace and quiet thanks to its unique hutong setting.
RECOGNIZED MANDARIN ORIENTAL SERVICE
What really sets Mandarin Oriental Qianmen apart is the legendary Mandarin Oriental service that is reflected in every detail. From 24-hour butler service that anticipates your every need, to personalized fitness training with trainers who have extensive teaching experience, to tea ceremonies with national senior tea artists, simply every member of staff contributed to my unforgettable experience.
The hotel has recently won numerous accolades, including 14th place and the Nikka Best New Hotel Award in The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2025, as well as a place on the 2025 Hot List of Condé Nast Traveler US and UK magazines. These accolades are no surprise, this hotel truly represents a new chapter in luxury hospitality.
MANDARIN ORIENTAL QIANMEN: SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
I was particularly impressed by the hotel’s approach to the local community. Mandarin Oriental Qianmen not only employs local people but also provides a wide range of communal services, from street cleaning to public toilet maintenance, improving the living environment for all hutong residents. This approach shows a deep understanding that true luxury cannot exist in isolation from its surroundings.
GASTRONOMIC PEARLS IN EVERY DETAIL
Let me return once again to the gastronomic experiences that deserve further attention. Chef Fei, with his Michelin pedigree, has transformed YAN GARDEN into a culinary destination that justifies a trip to Beijing in itself. His philosophy of combining traditional Cantonese techniques with the finest seasonal ingredients results in dishes that are both nostalgic and innovative.
I would especially emphasize his ability to transform traditional ingredients like sea cucumber or pigeon into modern masterpieces. The textures were impeccable, from the silky smoothness of the jellyfish terrine to the perfectly crispy skin of the roasted pigeon. Each dish was a visual masterpiece, served on hand-crafted ceramics that complemented the presentation.
At VICINI restaurant, Chef Luongo brings authentic Italian flavors to the heart of Beijing. His handmade pastas, from classic tagliatelle with truffles to innovative ravioli filled with local ingredients, demonstrate a deep understanding of Italian culinary traditions with creativity that reflects Beijing’s multicultural environment.
WELLNESS PHILOSOPHY
The spa deserves special recognition for its holistic approach to wellness. The combination of traditional Chinese medicine with modern spa treatments creates a unique experience that goes far beyond ordinary relaxation. Qiyuan Healing Space, whose name refers to the source or origin of Qi energy, provides a space for meditation and inner healing.
The team of therapists, led by CIBTAC certified massage therapists with unique “Guan Liu” healing massages, provide treatments that are deeply therapeutic. Guan Liu massage aims to feel the interplay between the flow of consciousness and the flow of energy in meditation, allowing love to be transmitted in wave form, reaching every cell of the body.
MANDARIN ORIENTAL QIANMEN: AN ARCHITECTURAL WONDER
Returning to the architecture, I must emphasize how impressive it is that each of the 42 houses is individually designed, yet all retain a coherent aesthetic that respects the hutong heritage. Traditional features such as stone thresholds, decorative wooden beams and courtyard koi ponds are combined with modern comforts such as underfloor heating, the latest generation air conditioning and high speed internet.
Each house has its own story, some once belonged to merchants, others to craftsmen, and all have been carefully restored while respecting their unique history. This attention to detail extends to the common areas, the corridors that connect different parts of the hotel are not closed corridors but open paths through the hutong that allow guests to be part of the daily life of the neighborhood.
TIAO BAR: COCKTAIL DESTINATION
TIAO bar deserves extra attention as one of the most exciting cocktail destinations in Beijing. Set over two floors with spectacular views of the surrounding hutong rooftops, the bar has become a gathering place for local drink connoisseurs and international guests alike. The cocktail menu is a masterpiece of creativity, with drinks that tell the stories of Beijing characters and legends.
I was particularly impressed by the “Hutong Sunset” cocktail, a complex blend of baijiu (Chinese brandy), yuzu liqueur and local honey, served with tea leaf smoke. Every cocktail comes with a story, and bartenders are more storytellers than just drink mixers. Bar food, from Beijing-style tapas to upscale versions of street classics, perfectly complements the drinks.
MANDARIN ORIENTAL QIANMEN: A BREAKFAST EXPERIENCE TO REMEMBER
Breakfast at the VICINI restaurant was a daily pleasure that deserves special recognition. The buffet combined the best of Eastern and Western cuisines, with live cooking stations where chefs prepared everything from traditional jiaozi (dumplings) to perfect eggs Benedict. I would especially like to highlight the selection of freshly baked pastries – the croissants were among the best I’ve tried outside of Paris, while the Chinese steam buns were soft as clouds.
Local honey, home-made jams from exotic fruits and a selection of premium teas made every breakfast special. Being able to have breakfast on the terrace overlooking the hutong while the locals started their day was an authentic Beijing experience that no other hotel could provide.
PERSONALIZED SERVICE
Butler service deserves a special mention. My butler, he was not only a real help and assistant, but a true concierge, cultural guide and problem-solver. His knowledge of local customs as he grew up in a hutong, he always knew all the best times to visit the sights and hidden gems of Beijing which made my stay richer and a special experience that I will remember. From arranging private visit to Temple of Heaven to avoid large crowds, to making reservations at exclusive restaurants outside the hotel, his commitment was exceptional.
The team showed incredible flexibility and creativity in meeting special requests. When I expressed my desire to learn the basics of calligraphy, in less than an hour a private lesson was organized with a local master in one of the hotel courtyards. This level of personalization is rarely found even in the most luxurious hotels.
SPACES FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS AND EVENTS
Although I have not personally used the spaces for special occasions, I have had the opportunity to tour them and I must admit that they are spectacular. The 255 square meter Mandarin Palace and the 290 square meter Zhengyang Mansion offer unique venues for weddings, corporate events and private parties. The combination of traditional architecture with state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment makes these spaces ideal for events that require a blend of authenticity and sophistication.
Chef Fei and his team can create tailor-made menus for special events, which I saw through several private dinners held during my stay. The level of detail in the decor, from the Ming Dynasty-inspired flower arrangements to the contemporary light installations, was impressive.
MANDARIN ORIENTAL QIANMEN: FITNESS AND WELLNESS PROGRAMS
The fitness center is well equipped with the latest Technogym equipment. Jake, a fitness instructor, offers personalized training programs that can include everything from traditional tai chi to high-intensity interval training. I especially appreciated the morning tai chi sessions in the courtyard, a moving meditation that is the perfect way to start a day in Beijing.
The hotel also offers unique wellness programs such as “Longevity Journey”, a three-day program that combines traditional Chinese medicine, personalized nutrition based on TCM principles, and a series of treatments designed to balance qi energy. Although I didn’t participate in the entire program, several guests I spoke with were thrilled with the results.
CULTURAL ACTIVITIES
The Mandarin Oriental Qianmen hotel regularly organizes cultural events that provide guests with a deeper understanding of Chinese culture. During my stay, I attended a private performance of Peking Opera at the Mandarin Palace, followed by an explanation of the symbolism of the costumes and movements. I also participated in a tea ceremony conducted by Lawrence, the hotel’s tea master, which was an educational and spiritual experience.
The “Beijing Central Axis Discovery” program offered by the hotel includes private tours with expert guides to UNESCO World Heritage sites along the central axis. These tours go far beyond mere sightseeing, they provide a deep understanding of the philosophy and cosmology behind the city planning of ancient Beijing.
SUSTAINABILITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS
Mandarin Oriental Qianmen demonstrates an impressive commitment to sustainability. The restoration was carried out with maximum preservation of the original materials, the energy management system is state-of-the-art, and the hotel uses locally-sourced products whenever possible. The fact that all the original bricks and tiles have been preserved and reused speaks of a deep respect for cultural heritage and the environment.
The recycling program, use of biodegradable products in the spa and initiatives to reduce plastic show that luxury and environmental awareness can go hand in hand. The hotel even has its own organic garden where they grow herbs and vegetables that are used in the restaurants.
MANDARIN ORIENTAL QIANMEN: TECHNOLOGY AND MODERNIZATION
Despite the traditional ambience, the hotel does not lag behind in terms of technology. Each room has a tablet to control the lighting, temperature and to communicate with the butler service, as well as an additional service through a Whatsapp group where there is a concierge team that is in charge of you. High-speed Wi-Fi is flawless throughout the complex, which is impressive considering the spread of facilities throughout the hutong.
I was particularly impressed by the navigation system, the hotel provides a map on a mobile app that helps guests navigate through the maze of hutong alleys. QR codes placed discreetly at key locations provide information about the history of specific places, making every walk an educational experience.
MAPLE LOUNGE: HEAVEN FOR TEA LOVERS
The Maple Lounge deserves additional attention as perhaps the quietest corner of the hotel. This intimate space, named after a magnificent maple tree that is over a hundred years old, offers an experience that goes far beyond just drinking tea. Here you can embark on a journey of discovery of tea culture with the hotel’s tea sommelier with many years of experience.
I especially enjoyed the tasting of Pu’er teas from Yunnan province. I enjoyed learning some unusual facts about tea itself, as well as the entire philosophy, history and ceremony surrounding it. The afternoon tea served in the Maple Lounge is a masterpiece, delicate dim sum, French cookies with a Chinese twist and selection finger sandwiches served on a hand-crafted porcelain dish.
MANDARIN ORIENTAL QIANMEN: UNIQUE SIGNATURE FAN
I cannot fail to mention the hotel’s signature fan, designed by the famous Chinese artist Xu Bing. This unique piece of art incorporates his original Square Character Calligraphy, a technique that arranges Latin letters into rectangular forms reminiscent of Chinese characters. “Unveil Beijing’s Soul” is written on the fan in Chinese ink, which perfectly describes what the hotel is trying and succeeding to achieve.
This piece of art is not just a decoration but a symbol of the fusion between East and West, tradition and modernity, which is the essence of the Mandarin Oriental Qianmen experience. The replica fan that I received as a gift now takes pride of place in my collection of hotel gifts that I proudly keep from every trip, as they are very important and sentimental memories for me.
SHOPPING AND LOCAL ATTRACTIONS
The location of the Mandarin Oriental Qianmen hotel allows easy access to some of the best shopping destinations in Beijing. Qianmen Pedestrian Street, a renovated pedestrian avenue with shops, cafes and street food stalls, is just a few minutes’ walk away. For those looking for high-end shopping, Wangfujing with its mega lifestyle mall WF Central is within easy reach, while SKP Shopping Mall, one of the most luxurious in Asia, is a 25-minute drive away.
But the real value of the location is not in shopping but in the accessibility of cultural sights. The Temple of Heaven, where I spent a wonderful morning thanks to an early visit arranged by the hotel, was almost empty and mystically peaceful. The Forbidden City, the National Museum and the National Center for Applied Arts were all within easy reach, but returning to the peace of the hutong after visiting these places was like entering another world.
MANDARIN ORIENTAL QIANMEN: CONCIERGE SERVICES
The Concierge team deserves special recognition for their encyclopedic knowledge of Beijing and their ability to make the near-impossible happen. When I expressed my desire to visit a private collection of Chinese art that is not open to the public, they were able to arrange a private visit with a curator. When I wanted to try authentic Peking duck at a restaurant where it was impossible to get a reservation, they somehow managed to secure a table.
Their network of contacts and connections in the city is impressive, but even more important is their understanding of what the guest really wants. They didn’t just fulfill requests, they anticipated needs and suggested experiences I didn’t even know existed.
TRANSPORT AND ACCESSIBILITY
The Mandarin Oriental Qianmen hotel offers elegant limousine transfers from both Beijing airports: Beijing Capital International Airport and the new Beijing Daxing International Airport, both approximately 50 minutes’ drive away. But what makes the hotel truly unique are the electric buggies that drive guests through the hutong alleyways. These fully enclosed, air-conditioned vehicles are the perfect way to get around the complex, especially on hot summer days or cold winter nights.
For those who prefer to walk, the hotel provides detailed maps and even organizes “hutong walking meditation” sessions early in the morning when the alleys are quiet and the locals start their day. Bicycles are also available for rent, perhaps the most authentic way to experience hutong life.
SEASONALITY AND THE FOUR SEASONS IN BEIJING
The design of the Mandarin Oriental Qianmen hotel reflects Beijing’s four seasons and I can only imagine how different the experience is each season. During my stay in autumn, the leaves on the trees in the courtyards produced spectacular shades of gold and red.
The hotel staff explained to me that in winter the courtyards take on a special charm when snow covers the traditional roofs, while spring brings cherry and magnolia blossoms in the private gardens. Summer allows maximum enjoyment of outdoor dining options and evening cocktails in the yard.
MANDARIN ORIENTAL QIANMEN: ART COLLECTION
The Mandarin Oriental Qianmen hotel has an impressive collection of contemporary Chinese art that is subtly integrated throughout the space. From large-scale installations in the main lobby to those in private dining areas, artworks contribute to the hotel’s cultural narrative. I was particularly impressed by the collection of local hutong artists whose works depict the daily life of the neighborhood through different eras.
The hotel organizes “Art Walks” with a curator who explains the significance and context of each piece. This tour gave me a new understanding of the contemporary Chinese art scene and how young artists are reinterpreting traditional themes.

Mandarin Oriental Qianmen Beijing is not just a hotel, it is a unique cultural experience, an architectural wonder and a gastronomic destination combined into one unforgettable package. I’ve stayed at several Mandarin Oriental properties around the world, but this one sounds truly unique with its hutong setting. Come italiano, sono sempre scettico riguardo ai ristoranti italiani all’estero, ma Chef Luongo sembra portare vera autenticità italiana nel cuore di Pechino. Le tue parole sulla pasta fatta a mano e sulla bistecca Fiorentina mi hanno convinto che questo posto vale davvero la pena.
