My dear travellers and lovers of unusual journeys, welcome to the new series of travelogues on the Mr.M blog. During the previous months you had the opportunity to get to know some of the countries of South America, and during November and the following months I will show you the beauties of the countries of the Far East, which make up the heart of Asia. Today I am very pleased to share with you an in-depth review of one of the most impressive hotel experiences I have ever had, a fantastic stay at the JW Marriott Seoul in the capital of South Korea.

Before describing in detail my experience of my stay in this exceptional accommodation, I would like to express my special gratitude to the United Nations World Tourism Organization – UN Tourism for supporting and promoting quality tourism around the world. Their dedication to connecting cultures and destinations is an inspiration to all of us who believe that travel enriches the soul.

Special thanks to the JW Marriott Seoul team for the exceptional hospitality they provided me during my stay. From the moment I stepped into this magnificent building, it was clear to me that I was in the right place. Every member of the staff, from the receptionist to the maids, from the waiters to the manager, demonstrated the highest level of professionalism and a sincere desire to make my stay memorable. This review is a special tribute to a hotel that sets the standard for luxury in Asia and is a true home away from home for any discerning traveller.

JW MARRIOTT SEOUL: HISTORY AND STRATEGIC LOCATION OF THE HOTEL

The JW Marriott Seoul hotel opened its doors in 2000 and has since been a prominent symbol of luxury in the prestigious Gangnam district in the heart of Seoul. During 2018, the hotel underwent a thorough renovation that refreshed the interior with a modern aesthetic, while preserving the timeless elegance that characterizes the JW Marriott brand. The result of this transformation is a contemporary hotel that seamlessly blends international luxury with the warmth of Korean hospitality, creating a unique atmosphere that is hard to find anywhere else in the world.

The location of the hotel is strategically perfect. Located in the heart of the Gangnam district, the hotel is located directly above the Shinsegae department store, one of the most prestigious in all of Asia, and the Express Bus Terminal. What makes the location truly exceptional is the direct connection to a subway station that serves as many as three lines: Line 3, Line 7 and Line 9, allowing guests to reach virtually anywhere in Seoul in just a few minutes. For travelers arriving from Incheon Airport, the hotel is approximately 59 kilometers away, while Gimpo Airport is approximately 45 kilometers away.

The Gangnam district, whose name has become globally famous, represents the financial, business and cultural center of Seoul. Garosu-gil Street with its boutiques and cafes, the Han River with its spectacular Banpo Hangang Park and the Seoul Arts Center are all within easy reach. For shopping lovers, the direct connection to Shinsegae Department Store and GOTO Mall underground shopping center with over 600 stores means you never have to leave the complex if you don’t want to.

JW MARRIOTT SEOUL: ACCOMMODATION CAPACITIES AND DESIGN

The JW Marriott Seoul hotel has a total of 376 sophisticated accommodation units, including 32 suites and two exclusive penthouses located on the highest floors of the building. Each room is designed to provide the perfect balance between traditional Korean aesthetic elements and modern functionality. Spacious bedrooms, luxurious bathrooms equipped with marble and wooden details, as well as a sophisticated relaxation area next to the window with a view of the city or the Han River, are all carefully designed to give guests a real sense of tranquility, relaxation and regeneration.

The Presidential Penthouse Suite occupies an impressive 180 square meters and spans two levels, offering panoramic views of Seoul, the Han River and Namsan Mountain. This penthouse has a private elevator, works of art by renowned artists and a high-end Bang & Olufsen sound system that creates an ambience of pure luxury. The Ambassador Penthouse Suite also offers a duplex configuration with a music room equipped with BeoLab 50 speakers, ideal for luxury events and private meetings.

MY ONE BEDROOM SUITE EXPERIENCE

During my stay I had the privilege of being accommodated in their One Bedroom Suite with a river view and I must admit that the experience definitely exceeded all my expectations. From the first moment I entered the apartment, I was greeted by an elegant lobby with polished marble floors that created a striking first impression. The spacious console board served both as a sophisticated design element and as a practical solution for storing bags and personal belongings.

The living room of the apartment was a true oasis of comfort. The spacious sofa next to the window, which turned into a comfortable sofa bed, is ideal for relaxing with a view of the city through the large windows or for watching TV, which was located on the opposite wall. An elegant coffee table provided a practical surface, while a wooden dining nook was perfect for in-room dining or working on a laptop. A beverage station with complimentary tea and coffee, along with a mini fridge, completed the living room space.

The separate bedroom was a real oasis of peace. Two large double beds with premium white linens and upholstered leather headboards provided luxurious comfort. Large windows offered a spectacular view and illuminated the space with natural light, while blackout curtains guaranteed a peaceful sleep. I was particularly taken by the marble-clad bathroom with a separate tub and shower with cypress wood floors, a detail that added an authentic Asian touch to the entire experience.

What made my stay really special was the attention to detail. When I mentioned at check-in that I prefer plant-based milk, it didn’t take long for the staff to put free glass bottles of almond and soy milk in my minibar and refill them regularly throughout my stay. This attention to the individual needs of guests is what sets truly luxury hotels apart from the rest.

JW MARRIOTT SEOUL EXECUTIVE LOUNGE: AN EXCLUSIVE SANCTUARY

The suite came with access to the Executive Lounge on the ninth floor and I have to say this is one of the most impressive hotel lounges I have ever visited. The lounge is open all day, with breakfast served from 6:30am to 10:00am, afternoon tea in the early afternoon, and evening snacks and cocktails from 4:30pm to 9:00pm. The room is designed to offer different zones, from quiet corners for private conversations to more spacious areas for socializing.

JW Marriott Seoul Executive Lounge interior with comfortable seating ninth floor exclusive access

Breakfast in the lounge was very rich and varied. From cereals, pastries, cakes, fresh fruits and vegetables, to Asian specialties and hot dishes, everything was represented. I especially appreciated the open kitchen station where the chefs prepared eggs and omelets to order. The quality of the ingredients was exceptional and the presentation at the level of a Michelin star restaurant. The evening snacks were so plentiful that some nights I didn’t have to go to dinner at all, the menu changed daily and included everything from seafood and meat to Korean specialties, salads and fantastic sweet treats.

In addition to the gastronomic offer, the lounge also offers express check-in and check-out, free ironing of the wardrobe, access to business services such as printing and faxing, as well as two hours of free use of the meeting room per day. For business travelers, these benefits are invaluable. The staff of the salon, I would like to single out the exceptional service, remembered my name from the first day and always greeted me with a smile and personalized attention.

JW MARRIOTT SEOUL GASTRONOMIC OFFER: A CULINARY PARADISE

Tamayura: The Japanese Culinary Art

As a lover of Japanese cuisine, Tamayura Restaurant was at the top of my list. This restaurant offers an authentic Japanese dining experience, with a focus on fresh ingredients and traditional preparation techniques. I made a reservation for the sushi chef table, which was a wise decision.

Watching the master prepare each piece of sushi with incredible precision was fascinating. He explained to me the origin of each fish, the temperature at which the rice is stored and the philosophy behind every detail. The Tamaguri Hokkaido clam was creamy and slightly sweet, the toro practically oozed in the mouth, and the uni (sea urchin) was as fresh as if it had just been pulled from the sea.

I also tried the omakase menu, where the chef chooses what you eat based on the freshest ingredients available that day. Every next bite was a surprise from the delicate sashimi to the perfectly fried tempura. The presentation was an art in itself, each plate was carefully composed and decorated to satisfy all my senses.

The prices are high, which can be expected from top-notch service, but I will be honest and say that this quality justifies every dinar spent. This is not a place for everyday dining, but for special occasions or for those moments when you want to pamper yourself a little.

Flavors: International Gastronomy Under One Roof

Flavors is the hotel’s main restaurant for breakfast and also offers buffets for dinner. I mentioned before that I preferred the breakfast in the Executive Lounge, but one morning I decided to try Flavors to compare.

The space is impressive, modernly designed with an open kitchen and different stations for various cuisines of the world. The selection is truly international: continental breakfast, Asian dishes, Korean specialities, even an Indian station with fresh paratha bread and curries. The omelette station was live on site and the head chef was friendly and understood my request for a mushroom and cheese omelette with no problem.

Flavors restaurant open kitchen with international buffet stations JW Marriott Seoul hotel

As for the quality of the service itself, everything was excellent, but I was more pleased with the personal attention and exclusivity present in the Executive Lounge. However, I can also understand why someone would prefer Flavors, because of the size of the space as it is more spacious, and it is suitable for families with children and offers a wider variety of food.

The evening experience at Flavors was interesting as they offer theme nights, one night I came across a Mediterranean theme with fresh seafood, prosciutto and Italian cakes. The quality was amazing and the atmosphere relaxed, but after returning to the room I stopped by the Executive Lounge for scones which were excellent especially as I love Macarons.

The Margaux Grill: The Crown of Hotel Gastronomy

The main restaurant, The Margaux Grill, is certainly the crown of the hotel’s gastronomy. Surrounded by beautiful gardens that evoke the ambiance of a European secret garden, this restaurant serves fresh seafood and premium beef prepared over an open fire. On display at the restaurant’s entrance are 60 steak knives crafted by master craftsmen from around the world – each guest can choose one of 12 cutlery sets, creating a uniquely personalized dining experience.

The Margaux Grill has an impressive wine cellar with over 4,000 bottles and 800 different wines hand-selected by the hotel’s wine director. In 2023, the restaurant won the prestigious Wine Spectator award ‘The Best of Award of Excellence’, which speaks of the quality of their wine list. The greenhouse-inspired private dining rooms, surrounded by a stunning garden landscape, are ideal for special occasions and can accommodate up to eight guests.

The Lounge: An Elegant Space for Every Moment of the Day

The Lounge in the hotel lobby is a place where elegance and affordability meet. This is not a typical hotel bar, it is a refined space with comfortable armchairs, dimmed lighting and an atmosphere that invites you to take your time and stay at least a little to enjoy.

The Lounge lobby bar elegant interior JW Marriott Seoul hotel afternoon tea setting

I used to come here for afternoon tea while planning content creation, writing blog posts or just needing some peace and quiet to read. The staff were unobtrusive but very attentive, a cup of tea was refilled before I emptied it. A selection of coffees, teas, juices and light snacks, quick bites are also offered. The prices are hotel prices, which means a little more than in a regular cafe, but the ambient value should not be neglected.

The Lounge Dimsum Set: A Surprising Delight

When I saw that The Lounge offered a dimsum set, I was both skeptical and curious. Dimsum in a hotel that isn’t primarily Chinese? It turned out that my fear was unfounded.

The set I ordered contained a selection of six types of dimsum: har gao (prawn in clear batter), shao mai (pork), chicken packets, veggie rolls and a few other things. Everything arrived in traditional bamboo baskets, piping hot and freshly prepared.

Dimsum set in traditional bamboo steamers The Lounge JW Marriott Seoul Asian cuisine

The dough was thin and soft, full of flavor, and the spices contributed to an exceptional aroma. I enriched this experience with jasmine tea and soy sauce with ginger. For someone who has already tried real dimsum in Hong Kong, I can say that this is a very good experience that you should not miss. It’s not an authentic street Chinese experience, but it’s done with respect for tradition and quality ingredients.

This is a perfect option for a light lunch or early dinner, especially if you don’t want to leave the hotel. The price is reasonable for what you get.

Pâtisserie: The Sweet Kingdom

We all have a flaw, mine is of a sugary nature, even though I can’t eat sweets I couldn’t resist Pâtisserie. This small corner in the ground floor of the hotel is a true paradise for lovers of sweets and pastries.

The window was full of French cakes, from macarons in various colors and flavors, eclairs with various creams, fruit tarts, chocolate cakes that looked like works of art. I couldn’t resist, so I tried a few things during my stay at this hotel.

Pâtisserie display case with French pastries and colorful macarons JW Marriott Seoul

The macaroons were perfect, a crispy exterior with a soft, delicious filling. I tried flavors like pistachio, raspberry and salted caramel. The vanilla eclair was classically good, with the perfect cream that wasn’t too sweet. Their version of tiramisu was heavenly, so refreshing, with just the right intensity of coffee and mascarpone cheese.

In addition to cakes, they also offer fresh bread, sandwiches and quiche, which is practical if you want to take something on a trip or to your room. Everything is packaged for takeout, but there are also a few places to sit, if you want to eat on the spot.

Tea Bar: A Ritual Moment of Relaxation

The Tea Bar is a smaller space dedicated to tea culture, which I found particularly interesting considering the rich Korean tea tradition. The range was impressive, from traditional Korean hibiscus and jujube teas, to Chinese green teas, Japanese matcha, Indian black teas and European herbal blends.

The staff was extremely educated. When I asked for a recommendation, I was guided through different options based on my preferences. I opted for the Korean omiya tea (five-flavored tea), which was complex and refreshing. Later I also tried the traditional fried rice tea, which had a kind of nutty, soothing taste.

Tea Bar traditional Korean tea service ritual JW Marriott Seoul hotel authentic experience

The service ceremony was amazing, the tea arrived in an elegant service, with an hourglass showing the ideal brewing time. With the tea, they offered light sweets that complemented the taste without spoiling the experience.

SAUNA: A KOREAN RELAXATION EXPERIENCE

As someone who has heard of Korea’s famous sauna culture, I couldn’t pass up the chance to try the hotel version. The sauna at JW Marriott Seoul Hotel is not as big as public jimjilbangs, but it offers a quality experience with luxurious details and a special experience.

Facilities include Finnish saunas, a steam bath and a cooling area. Everything was spotlessly clean, with high ceilings and quality materials. I spent a good hour alternating between the hot sauna and the cold shower, feeling the tension melt away from my muscles.

Korean sauna jimjilbang traditional wellness center JW Marriott Seoul authentic spa experience

I especially liked that they didn’t overcrowd the space, I always had enough privacy and peace. All necessities such as towels and care products were available in the changing room. They even offered me traditional Korean skin care products.

MARQUIS FITNESS CLUB: KEEPING FIT AWAY FROM HOME

As someone who tries to keep fit even when traveling, Marquis Fitness Club was an important part of my stay. The gym is well equipped, with modern cardio machines with individual screens, a good selection of weights and strength machines and enough space so you don’t feel crowded.

What I particularly liked was the opening of the gym early in the morning, from five o’clock. I was able to get a workout in before the city came alive, then come back active and start the day relaxed. The equipment was well maintained and the staff was available if you needed anything.

The view from the gym was also inspiring to motivate me with the large windows overlooking the city. Exercising on a treadmill while watching Seoul wake up is a different experience than the typical gym wall.

JW MARRIOTT SEOUL: WELLNESS AND RECREATION

The Marquis Fitness Club is the real attraction of this hotel and is considered the largest hotel fitness center in all of Korea. Located on three floors in the basement of the hotel, this complex offers over 350 professional exercise machines, as well as an 85-meter long jogging track. But that’s not all, the complex also includes an indoor basketball court, squash courts, table tennis, indoor golf simulators, a pilates studio, a group exercise room and much more.

The indoor pool and Jacuzzi provide the perfect place to relax after a busy day exploring the city. Sunbeds by the pool offer privacy and an exclusive ambience. Korean jimjilbang spa with traditional sauna is a real revelation for those who want to experience authentic Korean wellness culture. Access to these facilities is free for guests with Platinum, Titanium and Ambassador Elite status in the Marriott Bonvoy program.

Indoor swimming pool and whirlpool spa Marquis Fitness Club JW Marriott Seoul hotel

The Spa, located in the heart of the Gangnam district, is an urban oasis where natural healing properties come to life. The spa offers a wide range of treatments from body wraps to facials to massages that will completely regenerate you. I especially recommend scheduling a treatment after a long flight because there is no better way to recover than jet lag. Note to visitors: the spa closes on the third Thursday of every month.

JW GARDEN: A GREEN OASIS

One of the hotel’s hidden gems is the JW Garden, a peaceful outdoor space that is a veritable green oasis amidst the urban chaos of the Gangnam district. During the summer months, this garden offers comfortable seating areas surrounded by lush greenery where guests can escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy moments of peace and quiet. Particularly fascinating is that this garden doubles as the hotel’s herb garden, supplying the restaurants with fresh ingredients and demonstrating the hotel’s commitment to sustainable practices and culinary excellence.

JW MARRIOTT SEOUL: EVENT SPACES

For those planning business events, conferences or weddings, the hotel offers dynamic spaces equipped with modern technology, customized catering menus and expert event planners. Rooms with natural light and state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment make every event truly special. Weddings at JW Marriott Seoul are the epitome of elegance, with an expert team taking care of every detail from floral arrangements to personalized packages.

JW MARRIOTT SEOUL: PRACTICAL INFORMATION FOR GUESTS

Check-in at the hotel is possible from 3:00 p.m., and check-out is possible until 12:00 p.m. For higher-status Marriott Bonvoy members, late check-out is often offered automatically at check-in. Free Wi-Fi is available in all areas of the hotel. Parking is available for a fee. Children under the age of 12 can stay for free using existing beds.

Platinum, Titanium and Ambassador Elite members enjoy free access to the Executive Lounge for themselves and one guest, free breakfast, room upgrade option (subject to availability), as well as a welcome gift of wine and snacks or 1,000 Bonvoy points.

SEOUL: A DESTINATION THAT CHARMS

A stay at the JW Marriott Seoul provides the perfect base for exploring this fascinating metropolis. Although the hotel is located in the Gangnam district, south of the Han River, excellent subway connections allow easy access to all major attractions. Royal palaces like Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung, the traditional village of Bukchon Hanok, the colorful Myeongdong district with beauty shops and street food, the N Seoul Tower with its panoramic view, are all accessible in less than 30 minutes by subway.

For guests who prefer to stay close to the hotel, Gangnam offers endless possibilities. Banpo Hangang Park along the Han River is ideal for evening strolls, especially when the Banpo Bridge Fountain puts on a spectacular light show. The Seoul Arts Center offers a variety of cultural programs, while Garosu-gil Street abounds with designer boutiques, cafes, and restaurants. For nightlife lovers, Itaewon and Hongdae offer a party that lasts until the early hours of the morning.

Hello Marko, what an incredibly detailed hotel review! I stayed at the JW Marriott Singapore South Beach two years ago and was impressed by the Marriott standards, but your description of the JW Marriott Seoul makes it sound like they’ve taken luxury to another level. The fact that the Marquis Fitness Club spans three floors and has an 85-meter jogging track is remarkable. I’m definitely adding Seoul to my travel list now, and this hotel will be my first choice for accommodation.

Cher Marko, quelle critique d’hôtel fantastique!

This is hands down one of the most comprehensive hotel reviews I’ve ever read, Marko! I visited Seoul in 2022 and stayed at the Grand Hyatt Seoul, which has beautiful views of Namsan but felt a bit dated. Your description of the 2018 renovation at JW Marriott Seoul and the modern aesthetic combined with Korean warmth sounds like exactly what I was looking for. The detail about the cypress wood floors in the bathroom adding an authentic Asian touch is the kind of luxury detail that makes a difference.

Hallo Marko! Fantastische Hotelbewertung!

Cher Marko, j’adore tes critiques d’hôtels!

Marko, your review of the JW Marriott Seoul is exceptional! I stayed at the Four Seasons Seoul two years ago, which was beautiful but quite formal. Your description of the JW Marriott’s blend of international luxury with Korean warmth sounds more appealing for my travel style. The Margaux Grill with its 4,000-bottle wine cellar and the fact that guests can choose from 12 different cutlery sets crafted by master craftsmen from around the world is such a unique touch. Did you try the steakhouse during your stay?

Hola Marko!

This hotel review is incredibly helpful, Marko! I’m planning a trip to Seoul next spring and was torn between the JW Marriott and the Park Hyatt Seoul. Your detailed description of the Executive Lounge benefits, especially the evening cocktails and snacks that were substantial enough to replace dinner some nights, has convinced me. The fact that the staff remembered your name from the first day and your preference for plant-based milk shows the level of personalized service that makes luxury hotels special.

Marko, this is exactly the kind of detailed hotel review I look for before booking! I stayed at the JW Marriott Marquis Dubai three years ago and was impressed by the brand’s standards. Your description of the One Bedroom Suite with the marble bathroom and cypress wood floors sounds even more luxurious. Hola Marko! Marko, your hotel review is incredibly thorough! I stayed at the Lotte Hotel Seoul two years ago and while it was nice, your description of the JW Marriott Seoul sounds like a significant upgrade. The Presidential Penthouse Suite spanning 180 square meters over two levels with a private elevator and Bang & Olufsen sound system sounds absolutely incredible. Hello Marko, what an amazing hotel review! I’ve been a loyal Marriott Bonvoy member for years and have stayed at various JW Marriott properties around the world, including the JW Marriott Phu Quoc in Vietnam and the JW Marriott Maldives. Your description of the JW Marriott Seoul’s Tamayura restaurant with the omakase experience and the master sushi chef explaining the origin of each fish and the philosophy behind every detail sounds like a culinary highlight. The price might be high, but some experiences are worth every penny.

Your detailed description of the JW Marriott Seoul, from the strategic location above Shinsegae department store to the comprehensive wellness facilities including the Korean jimjilbang spa, has made my decision easy. The fact that the hotel opened in 2000 but underwent a thorough renovation in 2018 means it has the charm of an established property with modern amenities. Booking my stay now!
