My dear fashionistas, welcome to a new fashion story on the Mr.M blog. Today I am taking you on a fashion tour of one of the most beautiful pearls of the Cote d’Azur with the famous Italian fashion house FERRAGAMO. For a walk along the most famous rock of Monaco, I chose a FERRAGAMO knitted polo shirt made of silk thread, with wide navy and beige stripes. With it, I wore FERRAGAMO navy cargo pants, and on my feet I put on Jimmy Choo Memphis sneakers in natural beige color.
I put together the combination with a clear idea. I wanted the seafaring spirit of the Riviera to meet the Italian artisanal heritage, in a square that has been managed by the same family for more than seven centuries. In this text, I will guide you through the story of the boy from the Italian province who put on Hollywood, the shoemaker who made shoes for Princess Diana and the palace where Grace Kelly became a princess. A good outfit, in my experience, always carries a good story. This one carries several of them, so let’s start in order.
FERRAGAMO: WHY MONACO’S PRINCE’S PALACE IS BEST EXPERIENCED IN THE MORNING
You climb up to the palace through the old streets of the Monaco-Ville district, which the hosts call simply – Stone of Monaco. The road leads past peach and apricot colored facades, past small souvenir shops and the smell of fresh coffee. Then the streets suddenly diverge and a spacious square paved with small pebbles opens up in front of you. On one side there are old cannons, neatly lined up next to pyramids of acorns. On the other side, behind the white guard houses, rises the cream facade of the palace with crenellated towers.
We arrived early, before the biggest crowds. The spring sun was already warming the stone, and the rocky massif guarding the city from behind could be seen above the palace. Pink trees in bloom peeked over the palace fence as if posing. The photographer just nodded. We both knew the light would work for us that morning.
From the edge of the square there is a view of Port Hercule and the roofs of Monte Carlo. Monaco is the second smallest country in the world, so the entire principality is practically in the palm of your hand. Nevertheless, there is an unusual peace in this square. Visitors speak more quietly than elsewhere. Maybe because everyone feels that this is not a museum, but a home. The ruling family still lives behind those windows.
It is this combination of everyday life and long history that makes this place special. That’s why I chose it for a story about fashion that doesn’t rush the moment, but lasts.
THE FORTRESS THAT BECAME HOME: SEVEN CENTURIES OF THE GRIMALDI DYNASTY
The story of the palace begins in 1191, when the Genoese built a fortress on the rock to defend the coast from pirates. A little more than a century later, a scene worthy of a movie screen took place. On the evening of January 8, 1297, François Grimaldi arrived at the gate, disguised as a monk. He asked for lodging, and when the guards opened the door for him, his men occupied the fort. Since then, the Grimaldi family has not let Stena out of their hands. Sly monks with drawn swords still stand on the coat of arms of Monaco today.
For centuries, this was a real fortress, not a lavish palace. It was only in the seventeenth century that Prince Honore II turned the fortress into a palace modeled on Genoese castles. Galleries with arcades and the famous frescoes with the feats of Hercules come from that era.
The most famous chapter, however, is more recent. In April 1956, Hollywood star Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier III. The wedding of the century was watched by about thirty million people, and the famous actress became the princess of Monaco. Her elegance still hovers over this square today, so it seemed natural to me to talk about fashion right here.
If you happen to be on the Rock before noon, be sure to stay until 11:55. Then the Prince’s Carabinieri, a company founded long ago in 1817, perform a ceremonial changing of the guard. The ceremony is short, but it is performed with the precision of a Swiss watch. We watched it from the edge of the square, with the sound of drums bouncing off the stone. That sight is worth every minute of waiting.
WHY DID I CHOOSE FERRAGAMO FOR MONACO’S PRINCE’S PALACE?
When choosing clothes for a photo shoot, I always look for a connection between the place where the photos are taken and the fashion house. Here the connection imposed itself. Grace Kelly arrived from Hollywood to the Monaco throne. Salvatore Ferragamo took the opposite route: he went from the Italian province to Hollywood, then returned home as a legend. Their paths literally crossed, because Grace Kelly was a loyal customer of the Florentine house for years.
There is also a third connection, the most important to me. FERRAGAMO has never been a house of offensive luxury. Its strength lies in material, fit and comfort, not in big logos. The old part of Monaco, unlike the glitzy, casino-filled Monte Carlo, shares the same trait: it’s classy without any extra effort. I wrote about how Monte Carlo became a symbol of prestige in a separate travelogue from Monaco, so I invite you to take the time to read the travelogue from Monte Carlo if you plan to visit this pearl of the Cote d’Azur.
The combination of knitwear, light trousers and sneakers seemed to me to be the right answer to this kind of environment. Relaxed enough for a walk on the cobblestones, and thoughtful enough for the square of a principality.
SALVATORE FERRAGAMO: THE BOY WHO DRESSED HOLLYWOOD
Salvatore Ferragamo was born in 1898 in Bonito, a poor town in the hinterland of Naples. He was the eleventh of fourteen children. When his sister was to receive communion, the family had no money for white shoes, as was the custom. Nine-year-old Salvatore borrowed tools and materials from a meat shoemaker, and overnight, in secret, he made a pair himself. In the morning, the sister entered the church in white shoes, and the boy found his life’s calling.
As a young man, he went to America, where he first worked in a shoe factory in Boston. He soon arrived in California, just as the film industry was being born. In 1923, he took over the Hollywood Boot Shop on Hollywood Boulevard. For Cecil B. DeMille’s “Ten Commandments” spectacle, he supplied thousands of sandals, and soon the biggest silent film stars were knocking on his door. Rudolph Valentino, Gloria Swanson, Joan Crawford and Greta Garbo wore his creations. That’s why the press gave him a nickname that follows him even today: shoemaker of the stars.
Ferragamo, however, was not satisfied with beauty without comfort. Troubled by the question of why his shoes caused blisters, he searched for the answer through anatomy classes, where he studied the structure of the foot. His research revealed that the body’s weight naturally falls on the arch of the foot, which led him to create molds that provided firm support precisely in that crucial area. Actresses adored him because they wore his shoes for whole days of filming. Beauty and comfort, he realized, don’t have to be mutually exclusive. Everything that this house does today rests on this idea.

FERRAGAMO: FLORENCE, PATENTS AND THE ICONIC CORK WEDGE
In 1927, Ferragamo returned to Italy and chose Florence, the city of artists and top craftsmen. It wasn’t easy for him there either. The great economic crisis led him to bankruptcy in 1933, but he did not give up. Already in 1936, he rented premises in the medieval Spini Ferroni palace, in the very heart of the city. The headquarters of the house is still located in that palace, together with a museum dedicated to the founder.
Material shortages in the thirties forced him to ingenuity. When quality steel to reinforce the sole could not be obtained, he turned to cork. Thus was born the platform with a full heel, one of the most important inventions in the history of footwear. In 1938, he made the famous “Rainbow” model for Judy Garland, with layers of cork in rainbow colors. During his career, he applied for more than 350 patents, so he is rightfully considered the most prolific inventor among shoemakers.
Salvatore died in 1960, and his wife Wanda took over the helm. Under her leadership, the family workshop grew into a world-class fashion house that today dresses the whole person, from silk knitwear to leather haberdashery. His customers from the golden age, which included Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and Sophia Loren, remain the stuff of legend. The story is so cinematic that in 2020 director Luca Guadagnino made a documentary about it “Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams”. Few fashion houses have a biography that reads like a novel.
FERRAGAMO TODAY: THE NEW ERA OF AN ICONIC ITALIAN HOUSE
In 2022, the house shortened its name to FERRAGAMO and handed over the creative helm to Maximilian Davis, a young British designer. Davis found in the rich archive exactly what interests me the most: Hollywood glamor of the fifties translated into modern language. His collections are clean, precise and free of any excess. The deep red shade became the trademark of this new chapter.
For all of us who appreciate quiet elegance, that’s great news. The men’s collection today offers knitwear, light trousers and shoes that don’t call for attention. Instead of large logos, the house offers cut, material and feel on the skin. These are the things I prefer to wear, because they outlast every season and every trend. The pieces I present to you today are a perfect example of that philosophy.
FERRAGAMO FINE SILK KNIT POLO: TIMELESS STRIPES
Let’s move on to the main piece of this combination. The FERRAGAMO knitted long-sleeve polo is woven from fine silk thread in wide navy and beige stripes. The collar is soft and falls naturally, and the buttonless opening is reminiscent of old Riviera polo shirts. The sleeves and bottom hem are finished with ribbing in a dark color, so the knit keeps its shape nicely even after wearing it all day.
Silk thread is a material that you have to feel under your fingers to understand. It is lighter than cotton, pleasantly cools the skin and has a soft, almost matte shine. In the spring sun of Monaco, it performed flawlessly. During the day it breathed, and when a breeze blew in from the sea, it provided just enough warmth. That’s why I consider knitwear to be the smartest purchase for transitional seasons.
Stripes are, of course, a story in themselves. The navy stripe was born on the French coast as a sailor’s workwear, and fashion has long translated it into a sign of relaxed elegance. A broad taupe and beige stripe seems calmer and more mature than the classic thin navy. That’s why this polo looks not like a beach costume, but like a serious piece of clothing that happened to be on vacation.
My advice is simple. Wear a knit like this directly on your skin and let it fall naturally. Do not tighten it or tuck it into your pants. Its beauty lies in its lightness, and lightness is not feigned.
FERRAGAMO TAPERED CARGO PANTS: THE ELEGANT SIDE OF PRACTICALITY
With the polo, I wore FERRAGAMO navy cargo pants in a lightweight fabric with a pleated, crepe finish. Such material does not need to be ironed and is not afraid of suitcases, which makes it an ideal travel companion. The fabric catches the light in small folds, so the pants get a depth and liveliness that flat canvas simply doesn’t have.
The cargo cut has carried the reputation of pure workwear for decades. In recent years, however, major fashion houses have brought it back to town, but in a refined version. This model has a straight, relaxed leg and pockets that follow the line of the thigh instead of jutting out to the side. Thanks to this, the pants look neat even with soft knitwear, and the beltless belt preserves a clean silhouette.
The practical side is not to be underestimated. The spacious side pockets hold your phone and tickets to the palace, leaving your hands free for taking photos. After a full day of walking on the cobblestones and steep steps of Stena, I didn’t want to take them off. For me, that’s the toughest test a piece of clothing can pass. Elegance that blisters, blisters twice.
JIMMY CHOO: FROM EAST LONDON TO A GLOBAL LUXURY ICON
The story of the shoes in this combination takes us to London, but it starts far away, in Malaysia. Jimmy Choo was born in 1948 in Penang, into a family of shoemakers. He made his first pair, ordinary slippers, at the age of eleven, under the watchful eye of his father. He later perfected his craft at the famous Cordwainers shoemaking school in London, and in 1986 he opened his own workshop in East London, in a former hospital building.
The turning point was 1988, when British Vogue devoted eight whole pages to his creations. Soon, a customer like a shoemaker can only dream of: Princess Diana. For years, Chu went to Kensington Palace for rehearsals and made numerous pairs for her. Here is another royal thread in today’s story, quite suitable for the square of a principality.
In 1996, he teamed up with Vogue editor Tamara Mellon and founded Jimmy Choo. Sandra Choi, who since 2013 has independently managed the creative sector and maintains a distinctive handwriting, has worked with them from the very beginning. The series “Sex and the City” turned the name of the house into a worldwide household name, and the red carpets did the rest. Since 2017, Jimmy Choo has been operating within the Capri Holdings group. Fortunately, one thing has not changed: the footwear of this house always carries a touch of glamour, even when it comes to sneakers.
JIMMY CHOO MEMPHIS SNEAKERS IN NATURAL: GLAMOUR ON MONACO’S COBBLESTONES
I chose Jimmy Choo Memphis lace up sneakers in the natural edition, a warm beige shade reminiscent of sunny sand. The upper part combines smooth leather and stretchy technical material, so the foot sits comfortably from the first step. On the side is a metal JC badge in the same warm shade, just as striking as it needs to be and not a little more.
The most interesting part, however, is hidden in the sole. Through the transparent insert in the midsole, sparkling crystal elements can be seen, a small signature of the house that grew up on red carpets. The outer sole in the color of caramel has a deep pattern, so the sneakers are sure to step on the polished cobblestones of Prince’s Square. Take my word for it, those cobblestones can be slippery after the rain.
In my opinion, a single-colored light sneaker is the smartest choice for a mature man’s wardrobe. With navy, it looks fresh, with beige and cream tones it almost disappears, and with a suit it brings a measure of relaxation. That’s why I chose the socks in the color of the sneakers, so that the line of the leg would remain uninterrupted. A trifle, I admit, but an impression is made from the trifles.
HOW TO RECREATE THIS FERRAGAMO LOOK?
Every successful outfit is based on a simple rule: one main impression, everything else in the service of the whole. The main impression here is the stripes. That’s why the pants are plain, and the sneakers are almost neutral. The dark color is repeated in three places, on the stripes, pants, and flares, so the eye reads the whole as thought out, not thrown on.
Honestly, I borrowed the palette from Monaco itself. The cream facade of the palace, the beige stone of the square and the deep blue of the sky and the sea provide exactly this pair of colors. When the clothes blend into the background of the photo, the image appears calm and natural. I’ve learned that little trick through years of working with photographers, and I’m selflessly passing it on to you.
I also took care of the textures. Silk knit, pleated fabric and smooth leather provide three different surfaces in the same calm palette. It is this layer of detail that separates a thoughtful combination from an ordinary one. Finally, there is comfort. Nothing on that day constricted me, scratched me or required me to adjust in front of the mirror. When a man feels comfortable in his own skin, the photos show it before any logo.
THE ROCK OF MONACO: A GUIDE TO THE PRINCELY OLD TOWN
If your trip takes you to Monaco, set aside a whole day for the old town. Arrive before 12:30 and grab a spot for the changing of the guard at 11:55, as the square fills up quickly. From April to October, you can visit the state chambers of the palace, as well as the courtyard with sumptuous arcades and frescoes. The tour is not long, but leaves a strong impression.
A few steps from the palace stands the cathedral where Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier got married. The princess rests in it today, so admirers of her style leave flowers on the marble slab. Then continue through the narrow streets to the Oceanographic Museum, a magnificent building on the cliff itself. It was managed by the famous explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau for more than three decades.
At the end of the day, head down to Port Hercule and watch the yachts as the first lights of Monte Carlo come on. The distances are small, but the stairs are in progress. Therefore, wear comfortable shoes, preferably with well-fitting soles. My Memphis sneakers also passed that test, as evidenced by the photos taken at every corner of the Rock of Monaco.
WHY DOES EVERYONE LOVE RETURNING TO THE PRINCIPALITY OF MONACO?
I left Monaco with a full memory card of photos and an even fuller head of impressions. On the square in front of the Duke’s Palace, the stories that I like to share with you every week crossed paths. The Boy from Bonita Who Dressed Hollywood. The shoemaker from Penang who conquered London. Philadelphia actress turned princess. They all showed the same thing: that lasting value is built with patience, craft and measure.
A FERRAGAMO mesh polo shirt, navy cargo pants, and Jimmy Choo Memphis sneakers are just that, patient investments. None of these pieces shouts, and each one speaks. If you take away only one thought from this text, let it be this: choose clothes that will still have something to say ten years from now. The history of Monaco teaches us that true elegance is not measured in seasons, but in centuries.
How did you like my outfit today? I really tried to prepare this post with lots of love and I hope you like it! If you have any questions, comments, suggestions or messages for me, you can write me below in the comments. Of course, as always, you can contact me via e-mail or social networks, which you can find on the CONTACT page. See you soon in new fashion adventures on the Mr.M blog!
In this fashion story, Monte Carlo once again confirmed why it is called the pearl of the Cote d’Azur. And I’m already thinking about the next story from this magical piece of the Mediterranean. Until then, stay safe and wear what you love.
With Love from Monte Carlo,
Mr.M

Hello Marko, I truly enjoyed the way you connected Ferragamo’s history with Monaco instead of simply showing another outfit. It made me slow down and read every section because there was always another interesting story waiting. I have been wearing Ferragamo loafers for several years, but I have never tried one of their silk knit polos. Do they feel noticeably cooler than high-quality cotton during a warm Mediterranean day? The striped polo looked perfectly at home in Monaco-Ville, especially with those old stone buildings behind you. Thank you for reminding us that elegance is much more than visible logos.
Hi Marko, this was one of your strongest fashion stories in my opinion because everything felt connected. The outfit, the history of Ferragamo and even the location supported one another instead of competing for attention. I own several Brunello Cucinelli knit polos, but this Ferragamo one definitely caught my eye. How delicate is the silk when traveling? I usually pack light and worry about wrinkles or damage. The photographs on the cobblestones of Monaco looked incredibly natural. Looking forward to seeing more Riviera outfits.
Good evening Marko, I appreciate that you never rush through the history behind the brands you feature. The story about Salvatore Ferragamo making shoes for his sister as a child has always fascinated me, and you explained it beautifully. I have been considering buying my first Ferragamo knitwear piece for quite some time. Would you recommend starting with a striped polo like this one or choosing a solid color first? The navy and beige combination looked exceptionally refined against the architecture of Monaco. Excellent work once again.
As fotografias ficaram excelentes.
Hi Marko, I smiled when I reached the part about choosing clothes that still have something to say ten years from now. That idea reflects exactly how I build my own wardrobe these days. I recently bought a pair of Ferragamo trousers after reading several of your articles and I couldn’t be happier with them. Have you considered styling this silk polo with white trousers for another Riviera destination? The Monaco setting really emphasized the timeless character of the whole outfit. Thanks for another thoughtful read.
Hello Marko, your travel and fashion articles always remind me that luxury is often about restraint rather than excess. The combination of the striped silk polo, the navy cargo trousers and those understated Jimmy Choo sneakers looked incredibly balanced. I also appreciated the practical travel advice about arriving before the crowds and staying for the changing of the guard. Have you ever compared Ferragamo knitwear with Loro Piana in terms of comfort during spring? I would genuinely enjoy reading that comparison one day. Keep sharing these thoughtful stories because they are becoming increasingly rare online.
Hi Marko, I always appreciate when someone explains why an outfit belongs in a specific location instead of simply listing the brands. The atmosphere around the Prince’s Palace made this combination feel even more authentic. I have owned Ferragamo shoes for years, but your article made me realize I have overlooked their clothing collections. Do you think this silk polo would also work under a lightweight blazer for dinner by the sea? I like that nothing in the outfit feels forced or overly styled. It looks like something a gentleman would naturally wear while enjoying Monaco. Thanks for another inspiring… Read more »
Complimenti sinceri.
Hello Marko, I have followed your blog long enough to notice that your writing has become even more detailed recently. The balance between fashion history and travel information is excellent. I especially enjoyed reading about the changing of the guard because I completely missed it during my visit to Monaco years ago. Next time I will definitely arrive earlier. One question came to mind while reading your review. Does the silk knit require special care after traveling, or is it easier to maintain than most people expect? Wonderful article from beginning to end.
Hello Marko, one detail really stayed with me after finishing your article. I liked your advice about choosing clothes that still look relevant years later instead of chasing trends. That approach has saved me a lot of unnecessary purchases over time. I recently invested in a navy knit polo from another Italian brand, but I have to admit the Ferragamo version looks more refined. Have you noticed whether silk knitwear keeps its shape well after frequent use? Your Monaco photographs are among my favorites this year. Keep up the outstanding work.
Hi Marko, your article reminded me why I started following your blog years ago. You always encourage readers to appreciate craftsmanship before brand recognition. I visited Monaco almost fifteen years ago, and your photographs brought back wonderful memories of walking through Monaco-Ville early in the morning. I had forgotten how peaceful that area feels before the crowds arrive. Have you ever considered putting together a list of your favorite quiet luxury pieces from different Italian brands? I think many readers would enjoy that. Thank you for another memorable story.
Hello Marko, this article had exactly the right pace from beginning to end. I never felt like you were trying to sell the brands because your focus remained on craftsmanship and history. That makes your recommendations much more trustworthy. I own several Ferragamo belts, but now I am seriously considering their ready-to-wear collection as well. Which piece would you recommend as the first purchase after the silk polo? The Monaco setting suited this outfit perfectly. Looking forward to your next adventure.
Hi Marko, what impressed me most was how naturally the outfit blended into the surroundings instead of dominating the photographs. The navy and beige palette echoed the architecture without looking too calculated. I also appreciated the section about Ferragamo focusing on comfort through anatomy rather than simply aesthetics. That explains why the brand has earned such a loyal following over the decades. Have you ever compared Ferragamo knitwear with Brunello Cucinelli in the same climate? I would genuinely enjoy reading that article. Thanks again for sharing another thoughtful piece.
Hello Marko, your articles always encourage me to buy fewer things but choose them more carefully. That philosophy has completely changed the way I approach menswear over the last few years. I enjoyed the explanation about repeating the dark color in different parts of the outfit because it made perfect visual sense. Small details like that often separate a good outfit from an exceptional one. Do you usually plan your color palette before arriving at a destination, or does it happen more spontaneously? The photographs around Monaco-Ville looked wonderfully balanced. Thank you for another inspiring publication.
Hello Marko, every time you publish a new Riviera story I make a cup of coffee before opening it because I know I will stay for a while. This article was another enjoyable read from beginning to end. I especially liked your explanation about why silk performs so well during changing spring temperatures. That is something many brands mention but rarely explain properly. Have you noticed whether Ferragamo silk knitwear becomes even softer after repeated wear? The entire outfit reflected quiet confidence rather than obvious luxury. That is exactly the style I appreciate.
Hi Marko, I found myself reading the article much more slowly than usual because there was always another interesting historical detail waiting around the corner. The connection between Grace Kelly and Ferragamo was especially enjoyable. It made the location feel even more meaningful for this outfit. I have always admired understated Italian tailoring, and this combination captures that spirit beautifully. Would you ever consider creating a guide to your favorite Ferragamo essentials for men building a timeless wardrobe? I think many readers would find that extremely useful. Thanks for another excellent story.
Hello Marko, your Monaco series has become one of my favorite travel and fashion collections on the internet. I enjoy the fact that every destination tells a different story instead of following the same formula. This article reminded me that true luxury often reveals itself through craftsmanship rather than marketing. I have been thinking about adding more silk knitwear to my wardrobe, and your review certainly encouraged me. Do you think Ferragamo currently offers one of the strongest menswear collections among Italian luxury houses? I look forward to hearing your opinion in future articles. Keep up the fantastic work.
Read more »
Hi Marko, I really enjoyed reading this article with my morning coffee today. I originally came for the photos because Monaco always catches my attention, but I ended up reading every single paragraph. I honestly didn’t know that Grace Kelly had such a long connection with Ferragamo, so I learned something new. The outfit also feels very natural for the location and not like something put together just for photographs. I have one question though. Was the silk polo comfortable once the temperature got warmer later in the day? Thank you for another enjoyable story and I hope there are… Read more »
