My dear travellers and lovers of unusual journeys, welcome to the new hotel stay review on the Mr.M blog. How many years have I blogged, I realized that there are hotels that offer only a typical service that includes bed and breakfast, and on the other hand, there are also those that take you back several centuries, to the era when Amsterdam’s canals were the lifeblood of world trade, and the houses along the Herengracht testified to the power and wealth of Dutch merchants. Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam certainly belongs to the second category, as this is not just a hotel, but a real museum that reminds its guests that here the baroque past and modern luxury intertwine in a way that you can rarely experience anywhere else in Europe or the world.

Before I start today’s review about this exceptional hotel in the heart of Amsterdam, I want to express my special thanks to the United Nations World Tourism Organization – UN Tourism and Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam for supporting and promoting quality tourism around the world. Their dedication to connecting cultures and destinations is an inspiration to all of us who believe that travel enriches the soul.

When I arrived in Amsterdam for the umpteenth time in December 2025, the city welcomed me in a specific winter atmosphere that makes it so attractive outside of the summer season. It didn’t snow, but the short December days, the light installations on the canals and the warmth of the Dutch cafes created a scene that I remember as one of the most beautiful winter pictures I experienced in Europe after so many years. And in the heart of it all, at a well-known address in the city, the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam was waiting for me.

HERENGRACHT: A STREET THAT TELLS A STORY OF POWER

To understand why the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam hotel is so special, you must first understand where it is located. The hotel occupies addresses from 542 to 556 on the Herengracht, the so-called Lord’s Canal, the most prestigious of Amsterdam’s three main canals built during the Dutch Golden Age in the 17th century. This canal is part of the ring of canals that was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2010, which gave this entire part of Amsterdam the well-deserved protection and status of a cultural treasure of humanity.

Herengracht got its name from the rich merchants and bankers who dominated the era of the Dutch Golden Age because the word ‘heren’ means gentlemen, and it was they who built the monumental houses along this canal. At that time, Amsterdam was the commercial center of the world, with powerful banking houses, naval fleets that sailed to Southeast Asia, and a cultural scene that gave birth to Rembrandt, Vermeer and a whole generation of artists whose works today adorn the world’s most important museums.

It was in this context that the six canal palaces that make up today’s Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam hotel took shape. Built from the middle of the 17th century, these houses belonged in turn to some of Amsterdam’s most distinguished families: the De Wilt, Kemp, Hoft, Sauteijn, Becker and Brentano families. Each of them has its own story, and many original architectural elements such as frescoed ceilings, fireplaces, marble staircases, all details that have been preserved to this day in full.

WALDORF ASTORIA AMSTERDAM: HISTORY FROM NOBLY HOMES TO BANKS AND HOTELS

The history of these six palaces spans four centuries and several completely different uses. First there were the homes of the aristocracy, the house at number 546, for example, was built in 1672 for Mayor William Southeyne, a merchant who did business with Italy and the Levant. The house at number 548, where the main entrance to the hotel is today, was built in 1665 for Cornelis Becker, a member of the prominent Protestant Becker family. A special place is occupied by the Brentano Palace, bought in 1753 as the family home of Josephus Brentano, a Dutch merchant of Italian origin, who decorated the house in the opulent style of the eighteenth century. Emperor Alexander I of Russia, Dutch King William I and Prince Frederik stayed in this palace.

Over time, many of these houses changed owners and uses. In the 1930s and 1960s, part of the building was converted into office space for shipbuilding companies and insurance companies. Later, all the houses were united and turned into the premises of the private bank MeesPierson. Traces of that banking period are still visible in the hotel today, the most striking example being the Vault Bar, located in the original bank vault, where the former safes have been converted into showcases for premium spirits and cocktails.

The turning point occurred in 2014, when the new owners initiated a thorough restoration of the entire complex, turning it into the twenty-fifth hotel of the world-famous Waldorf Astoria brand, which is part of the Hilton Group. The renovation was carried out with exceptional attention to the original details, wall paintings over four hundred years old were restored and preserved, and each of the six palaces retained its identity and name. They entrusted the interior design to the London architectural studio GA Design, which managed to fit modern standards of luxury into the framework of historical architecture.

WALDORF ASTORIA AMSTERDAM: STAIRCASE BY DANIEL MARO

I must admit that entering the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam is a special and unique experience. Through monumental wooden doors, you enter the high-ceilinged lobby, decorated with white plasterwork and baroque ornaments that immediately make it clear that this is no ordinary hotel. However, what really takes your breath away is the monumental staircase that rises through four floors, attributed to Daniel Morrow, the famous architect of the French King Louis XIV and the Dutch Viceroy William III. Maraud’s staircase, with its detailed marble reliefs and plasterwork of angels, is one of the most impressive examples of the Louis XIV style outside of France.

At the reception, I was greeted with hot tea and chocolates in the shape of traditional Dutch clogs, a detail that is both charming and thoughtful. I was then offered to choose a fragrance for my room from the collection of the famous French house of Cire Trudon, the oldest candle maker in France, believed to have supplied the court of Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette. I chose Ernesto, an earthy, masculine fragrance with notes of rum, grapefruit, oak and tobacco. That scent was then placed in my suite, creating a stay experience that I still remember today. Details like this are exactly what separates the really high-end hotels from the ones that are just expensive.

WALDORF ASTORIA AMSTERDAM: KING ONE BEDROOM SUITE WITH CANAL VIEW

Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam hotel has 93 rooms, loft rooms and apartments, whose areas range from 28 to 123 square meters. Given that each of the six palaces had its own architecture, no room in the hotel is identical to another, each with a unique layout, ceiling height and original details that make it special.

For my stay I chose the King One Bedroom Apartment with Canal View, an apartment that offers exactly what the name promises, a spacious living room and bedroom overlooking the famous Herengracht. The area of this suite offers six different zones for sleeping, relaxing, working and dressing, which makes it ideal for those who want more than just a place to stay in a hotel.

The living room is elegantly furnished with a comfortable sofa, a desk and a 42-inch TV. It leads to the master bedroom with the signature Waldorf Astoria king size bed, upholstered in the finest Egyptian cotton. The comfort of this bed is something that cannot be described in words, after a full day of sightseeing in Amsterdam in the December cold, I lay down and felt every muscle relax. If you’ve ever slept on a bed that made you wish you never got up, then you know what I’m talking about.

The bathroom is spacious, with a separate shower and a bathtub in which a small TV is installed, a detail that may seem like an exaggeration, but after a long day in winter Amsterdam, a bath with a favorite show becomes a completely logical luxury. The toiletries are from Aesop, and the hair dryer is Dyson, little things that speak of attention to the quality of every detail. The apartment is additionally equipped with an espresso machine, an electronic safe big enough for a laptop and free wireless internet.

What makes this apartment truly unforgettable is the view. High windows with original frames frame the canal like a living picture, especially in the evening, when the lights reflect on the water, the scene is almost painterly. December Amsterdam, seen from the warmth of this apartment, remained in my memory as a perfect combination of festive euphoria and magnificence.

WALDORF ASTORIA AMATERDAM GASTRONOMIC EXPERIENCE: FROM MICHELIN STARS TO BANK VAULT

Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam offers several different gastronomic concepts and each of them deserves special attention. At the top of the pyramid stands Spectrum, a restaurant with two Michelin stars that offers a superior gastronomic experience with a tasting menu that changes with the seasons. This restaurant is the successor of the former Librije’s Zusje Amsterdam and has continued the tradition of exceptional cuisine with an innovative approach to European cuisine. Spectrum uses local, seasonal ingredients and transforms them into dishes that are both visually spectacular and aromatically complex. Reservations in advance are mandatory, and not only as a formality, the restaurant is in high demand among connoisseurs of top food from all over the world.

Peacock Alley is an elegant lounge in the lobby area of the hotel, intended for all-day enjoyment – from a light lunch, through the famous afternoon tea, to evening cocktails. Afternoon tea at Peacock Alley is a special ritual that the hotel has raised to the level of art. Inspired by the works of Dutch masters of painting, this tea includes small edible masterpieces inspired by Van Gogh’s sunflowers, Rembrandt’s canvases and the figurative world of Dutch Baroque painting. A selection of savory and sweet snacks, accompanying teas and fresh English scones are also served. For anyone who appreciates rituals and an artistic approach to food, this is a must experience.

And then there’s the Vault Bar, perhaps the most intriguing space in the entire hotel. Located in the basement, in the original vault of the former MeesPierson Bank, this bar retains the original safes that now serve as display cases for premium drinks. The atmosphere is intimate, with an air of secrecy reminiscent of the elegant speakeasies of the Prohibition era. Here you can try carefully prepared avant-garde cocktails, rare Scotch whiskeys and selected wines. For couples, the Vault Bar also offers a special experience, dinner for two in a private part of the vault, with a “search for the ring” through the numbered safes. A more romantic way to propose is hard to imagine.

Goldfinch Brasserie deserves a special mention outside of the breakfast context as well. This elegant garden-view restaurant offers contemporary European cuisine in a more relaxed atmosphere than Spectrum, making it ideal for a light lunch or early dinner. The menu changes seasonally, and the focus is on fresh, local ingredients prepared with a French approach and Dutch practicality. For guests who want quality food without the formality of a tasting menu, Goldfinch is the perfect choice.

Breakfast is served in the Goldfinch Brasserie, which overlooks the hotel’s private garden. It is an extensive buffet with Dutch cheeses, smoked salmon, fresh pastries, fruit, yogurt and one hot dish of your choice. A recommendation is the Waldorf Astoria Eggs Benedict, an English muffin with sauteed baby spinach, salmon, organic poached eggs and hollandaise sauce. The breakfast is what I would call thoughtfully sumptuous, it doesn’t go overboard with the amount, but every dish is of exceptional quality, prepared with love. The staff is very pleasant and always ready to give the best recommendation, after a few days they learned my habits and we became friends.

GUERLAIN SPA: AN OASIS OF PEACE IN THE HEART OF THE CITY

In the basement of the hotel, with direct access to the private garden, there is a luxurious Guerlain Spa, the first of its kind in the Benelux countries. Guerlain, the famous French house that is synonymous with the highest level of care and beauty, offers here treatments that combine the expertise of their therapists with exclusive products that cannot be found in ordinary sales.

The spa has three intimate treatment rooms, an indoor swimming pool, a sauna, a steam room and a modern fitness center. The pool is particularly beautiful, indoor, with a discreet fountain element, surrounded by soothing tones and subdued lighting.

After a morning swim or an evening sauna, the feeling of relaxation is complete. The therapists are highly trained, and the facials are among the best you can get in Amsterdam, according to numerous expert guides. I had the opportunity to try several of their treatments and I can say that this is a really special experience for me.

In addition to the spa, the hotel also houses a Guerlain boutique with an exclusive range of perfumes, cosmetics and candles, including products sold exclusively in Guerlain Spa centers around the world. For lovers of premium skin care and perfumes, this is the destination for themselves. One thing is for sure – I will definitely come back here again on my next visit to Amsterdam!

WALDORF ASTORIA AMSTERDAM SERVICE THAT DEFINES THE WALDORF ASTORIA GOLD STANDARD

What makes Waldorf Astoria stand out globally is their concept they call True Waldorf Service, a personal approach in which each guest is assigned a personal concierge tasked with fulfilling all your wishes during their stay. This is not just a formality. In practice, this means you have one person who knows your preferences, arranges transfers for you, makes restaurant reservations, secures museum and theater tickets and generally makes sure your stay runs smoothly without any effort on your part.

During my stay I was impressed with the level of care provided by the staff. From the moment I arrived, every member of the team was friendly, professional and genuinely interested in making my stay as comfortable as possible. There is a 24-hour front desk, 24-hour room service, and valet parking, free bike rentals, and even a private boat dock in front of the hotel where you can take a private canal cruise.

The hotel has been awarded multiple times, it is among the first on TripAdvisor’s lists for the best luxury hotel in the Netherlands, has a five-star rating from Forbes Travel Guide, and their spa received global recognition at the World Luxury Spa Awards. These awards are not advertising gimmicks, they are a reflection of the consistent quality that is felt in every corner of this historic architectural building.

AMSTERDAM IN DECEMBER: WHY WINTER MAY BE THE BEST TIME TO VISIT

Many travelers choose Amsterdam to visit during the summer period, but I argue that December may be a better choice, especially for those who appreciate peace, culture and an atmosphere without crowds. When I arrived, the city was enveloped in that festive winter beauty and euphoria, which always reminds me of my childhood, especially the cinnamon-scented cookies that smell for a mile.

One of the biggest perks of a winter visit is the Amsterdam Light Festival, an annual festival of light art installations that runs from late November to mid-January. During this festival, the canals are transformed into an open-air gallery, around twenty works of light art are installed along the waterways, and the best way to experience them is by taking a boat ride on the canals. The sight of light sculptures reflected in the dark water of the canal is something that simply must be seen live.

Winter Amsterdam is also a paradise for museum lovers. The queues in front of the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum are much shorter than in summer, which means that you can spend your time in peace in front of Rembrandt’s Night Watch or Van Gogh’s Starry Night without being pushed and rushed. The Rijksmuseum, located on the Museumplein, houses a collection of over eight thousand objects from the Dutch Golden Age, and the building itself is an architectural masterpiece worth seeing from the outside as well. The Van Gogh Museum houses over seven hundred works by this genius, including paintings by those who inspired him, such as Monet and Gauguin.

An open-air ice rink is set up on Museumplein in December, overlooking the Rijksmuseum, one of the most photogenic ice rinks in Europe. Around the rink, stands spring up with hot chocolate, mulled wine and oliebolen, the traditional Dutch donuts baked for the New Year. The smell of fresh oliebolen in the cold December air is something that immediately gets you into the festive spirit of the city.

Dutch winter cuisine is another reason to visit Amsterdam at this time of year. Snert, a thick pea soup, stamppot, a traditional dish made from potatoes and vegetables, and fondue made from the famous Dutch cheeses, are perfect winter food after a long day in the cold. And for dessert, warm stroopwafels, two thin waffles fused together with caramel, and poffertjes, mini pancakes dusted with powdered sugar, will offer you just the kind of comfort you need in December.

Another advantage of a winter visit is that in December Amsterdam hosts a whole series of Christmas and New Year’s fairs. Funky Xmas Market in the Westergas complex offers an alternative approach, instead of classic decorations, here you will find unique handmade items, circus entertainers and food from all over the world. For a more classic atmosphere, there is the Christmas Village on the Museumplein, with wooden houses, local food and music. The Royal Theater Carré shows the World Christmas Circus at this time, while the Concertgebouw offers classical music concerts in one of the most acoustically perfect halls in the world.

WHAT TO DO IN AMSTERDAM DURING DECEMBER?

Amsterdam is a city best explored on foot, and the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam is ideally situated for all the key sights. Here is what I would recommend based on my own experience.

The Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum are a must first stop. I suggest you come right after opening because it gets crowded in the afternoon even in winter. Tickets must be purchased online in advance. The MOCO Museum on the same square offers modern art works by Warhol, Banksy and Heiring and is a great contrast to the classic masters from the neighboring museums.

The Anne Frank House is another must-see, but tickets should be booked weeks in advance as they sell out quickly. Rembrandt’s house on the Jodenbreestraat provides an insight into the daily life and work of the greatest Dutch painter, with an original workshop and engraving tools.

The Jordaan district, a former working-class neighborhood that is now one of the most charming parts of the city, is perfect for a winter stroll. Narrow streets, independent galleries, antiques and small cafes where you can sit for hours with a hot drink all make the Jordaan ideal for relaxed exploration. The Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes), located between the main canals, offer unique boutiques, vintage shops and local craft shops ideal for buying special gifts.

For architecture lovers, a walk along Reguliersgracht is a must, this canal connects Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht, and from one bridge you can see fifteen bridges at the same time. In the evening, when the bridges are lit up, the sight is truly magical. The Utrechtsestraat, which is a stone’s throw from the hotel, is full of great restaurants, cafes and small shops, ideal for a night out without the need for a taxi.

I would especially recommend a visit to the so-called brown cafes, traditional Dutch beer halls with dark wooden interiors and the patina of centuries. Café Hoppe, which has been declared a national monument, and Café Chris, where Rembrandt himself is said to have sat, are perfect for an afternoon break with a local beer or genever, a traditional Dutch juniper spirit. In December, many of these cafes set up blankets and heaters outside, so you can enjoy the atmosphere even outdoors, wrapped in wool, overlooking the canal and a cup of hot drink in hand.

For shopping, PC Hooftstraat is Amsterdam’s version of Milan’s Via Montenapoleone, home to boutiques from leading fashion houses, from Chanel and Louis Vuitton to smaller, specialist Dutch design shops. This street can be reached from the hotel in about fifteen minutes on foot, passing through the Spiegelkwartier, a street with over seventy galleries and antiques and worth seeing in itself.

The Koninklijk Paleis, or Royal Palace on Dam Square, is an impressive seventeenth-century building that still serves the ceremonial needs of the Dutch royal family. The interior is decorated with marble and works by famous Dutch painters, and the entrance is open to the public most of the year.

For those who like something different, the Heineken Experience offers an interactive tour through the former brewery of this world-famous brand, while the House of Bols offers an insight into the four-hundred-year history of the oldest distillery brand in the world and a tasting of jenever, a traditional Dutch drink.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION FOR GUESTS OF THE WALDORF ASTORIA AMSTERDAM HOTEL

The Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam hotel is located at Herengracht 542-556, in the heart of the city. Schiphol Airport is about twenty minutes away by car. The reception is open twenty-four hours a day, and check-in at the hotel is from 3:00 p.m., while check-out is until 12:00 p.m. Parking is possible in the hotel itself, with prior reservation, at a price of ninety euros per day, with the service of a parking attendant. A charging station for electric cars is also available.

The hotel offers free bicycle rental for guests, in a city where the bicycle is the primary means of transportation, this is an invaluable amenity. The Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam also has its own boat dock in front of the hotel, which makes it possible to organize private canal tours directly from the hotel address. For everything from theater tickets to private museum tours, there is a personal concierge ready to organize every detail during your stay.

It is also worth mentioning the hotel’s private garden, which is claimed to be the largest private garden in Amsterdam. In summer, it serves as an oasis of greenery in the city center, and in winter, with discreet lighting and a view from the restaurant and spa center, it provides a sense of intimacy that is rare in a city with such a dense population. The garden is also available for private events such as weddings and celebrations in this environment take on a whole new dimension.

The hotel also has 7 multipurpose rooms for meetings and events, of which the Maurer room with wall paintings from the 18th century in Rococo style stands out, a space that looks like a set for a historical film, and is used for private dinners, business meetings and exclusive events. Each room offers canal or garden views and is equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

An interesting detail for visitors in December: the Amsterdam Light Festival lasts from the end of November to the middle of January, and many of the light installations are located right on the canals in the immediate vicinity of the hotel. A walk along the canals in the evening, after dinner at the Vault Bar, is one of those moments that make a visit to Amsterdam unforgettable.

WHY SHOULD YOU STAY AT THE WALDORF ASTORIA AMSTERDAM HOTEL?

The Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam is a hotel for those who are looking for more than comfort from their trip, for those who are looking for a story, authenticity and the feeling of being part of something bigger than the accommodation itself. This is a hotel for people who appreciate history and architecture, who know how to recognize quality in details and who understand the difference between what is just expensive and true luxury that is really worth it.

For couples looking for a romantic trip, for business people who need peace and functionality, for lovers of gastronomy who want to dine in a restaurant with two Michelin stars without leaving the hotel or for all those who simply want to experience what it’s like to live in a palace from the Golden Age, the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam is the answer to all these wishes and needs.

After my stay in December, I can say that this hotel didn’t just impress me, it reminded me why I love traveling during the New Year holidays. Because travel in its best form is not an escape from reality, but a deeper acquaintance with the world and its stories. And the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam is a hotel that tells one of the most beautiful stories in Europe. If you’re ever planning a trip to Amsterdam and looking for accommodation that will give you more than four walls and a roof over your head, the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam experience is definitely something you’ll remember for years after you return home, which makes this place ideal for you. The six canal palaces on the Herengracht are waiting to tell you their story, and I believe that, like me, you will leave rich for a truly special experience.

Hello Marko, what a magnificent hotel review. The level of detail you provide about the history of each of the six canal palaces is remarkable. I was particularly fascinated by the story of Mayor William Southeyne, whose house at number 546 was built in 1672, and the fact that he traded with Italy and the Levant. Knowing that Emperor Alexander I of Russia and Dutch King William I stayed in the Brentano Palace adds such gravitas to the property. I stayed at the Pulitzer Amsterdam a few years ago, which is also composed of historic canal houses, but your description… Read more »

Read more »

Bonjour Marko, quelle revue exceptionnelle. Read more »

Marko, outstanding review. The section about the Vault Bar located in the original bank vault of the former MeesPierson Bank is absolutely fascinating. The idea that the original safes have been converted into display cases for premium spirits and cocktails is such a brilliant piece of adaptive reuse. And the romantic proposal experience you described, with a dinner for two in a private part of the vault and a ring search through numbered safes, is perhaps the most creative engagement concept I have ever heard of. Read more »

Hi Marko, brilliant review from start to finish. What caught my attention most was your description of the breakfast experience at the Goldfinch Brasserie. The Waldorf Astoria Eggs Benedict with sauteed baby spinach, salmon, organic poached eggs and hollandaise sauce on an English muffin sounds absolutely divine. I also appreciate your observation that the breakfast is “thoughtfully sumptuous” rather than excessive, which shows a level of culinary sophistication that I value. The fact that after a few days the staff learned your habits and you became friends speaks volumes about the quality of service. I have stayed at several Waldorf… Read more »

Read more »

Hello Marko, this is one of the most comprehensive luxury hotel reviews I have ever read. You have managed to weave together the historical context of the Herengracht, the architectural significance of the six palaces, and your personal experience in a way that makes me feel as though I have visited the hotel myself. The detail about the London architectural studio GA Design being responsible for fitting modern luxury standards into the framework of historical architecture is interesting. Marko, exceptional work with this review. As someone who has stayed at the Waldorf Astoria in New York, Beverly Hills and Berlin, I can tell you that the Amsterdam property sounds like it may be the most historically significant of them all. The fact that it incorporates six canal palaces spanning from the seventeenth to the eighteenth century, each with preserved original frescoes and architectural details, is genuinely unique in the Waldorf Astoria portfolio. Hi Marko, wonderful review. I have been fascinated by Amsterdam’s canal house architecture for years and your description of why these houses were built narrow and tall, with the tax being based on facade width, is always a delightful reminder of Dutch pragmatism. The Waldorf Astoria occupying addresses 542 to 556 on the Herengracht means it spans a significant stretch of the most prestigious canal in the city. I visited Amsterdam in the autumn of 2022 and stayed at the Waldorf Astoria for two nights. I can confirm everything you have written about the Daniel Maraud staircase, it truly does… Read more »

Read more »

Marko, this review is genuinely compelling. The historical layering of the property fascinates me, from aristocratic homes in the seventeenth century, through office space for shipbuilding and insurance companies in the 1930s and 1960s, to the MeesPierson bank, and finally to the Waldorf Astoria hotel opening in 2014. Each era has left its mark on the building and the fact that these layers are visible and celebrated rather than hidden is what makes the property so special. I also appreciated your practical information section, particularly the detail about check-in at 3pm and checkout at noon, the ninety euro daily parking… Read more »

Read more »

Hello Marko, excellent review. I travel extensively for work and have developed quite specific preferences when it comes to hotel amenities, so I was pleased to read about the Dyson hair dryer and Aesop toiletries in the bathroom. These may seem like small things, but they signal that the hotel pays attention to quality at every level. The separate shower and bathtub with built-in TV is a wonderful touch for winter stays when you need that extra bit of comfort after walking the cold canals. I also noted the electronic safe large enough for a laptop, which is essential for… Read more »

Read more »

Marko, superb hotel review. As a history enthusiast, I was deeply interested in the transition of these buildings from private homes to banking offices and finally to a luxury hotel. The fact that the MeesPierson bank occupied the premises before the Waldorf Astoria conversion adds such an interesting layer to the property’s story. I visited Amsterdam last November and spent an evening at the Vault Bar during a friend’s recommendation, and I can confirm that the atmosphere is genuinely unique. Sitting among the original bank safes while sipping a carefully crafted cocktail felt like stepping into a different era. I… Read more »

Ciao Marko, fantastica recensione. Read more »

Read more »

Hi Marko, excellent review. As a frequent traveller to the Netherlands, I was particularly interested in your practical information section. The detail about Schiphol Airport being twenty minutes away by car is spot on, though I would add that the train from Schiphol to Amsterdam Centraal takes about fifteen minutes and from there a taxi or tram to the Herengracht is very quick. The free bicycle rental for guests is a fantastic amenity that I wish more hotels offered. Amsterdam is a city made for cycling and having a quality bike provided by the hotel removes the hassle of dealing… Read more »

Read more »

Marko, tremendous review. I was thoroughly impressed by the gastronomic depth of the hotel. Having a two-Michelin-star restaurant, the elegant Peacock Alley for afternoon tea, the atmospheric Vault Bar, and the Goldfinch Brasserie all under one roof means you could spend an entire weekend at the hotel without ever needing to leave for a meal. That is the hallmark of a truly complete luxury property. I visited Amsterdam two years ago and dined at Spectrum when it was still relatively new, and I can confirm the food was absolutely exceptional. The seasonal tasting menu was creative without being pretentious, which… Read more »

Read more »

Hello Marko, your review of the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam is exactly the kind of thorough, knowledgeable hotel writing that I appreciate. The historical context you provide about the Herengracht and the Dutch Golden Age enriches the hotel review immeasurably. I was particularly interested in the detail about the canal system being inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2010, which means the hotel sits within a protected cultural landscape. The renovation by the London studio GA Design, preserving four-hundred-year-old wall paintings while integrating modern luxury, must have been an incredibly delicate undertaking. I stayed at the Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh… Read more »

Read more »

Marko, what a superb review. I have been considering the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam for a wedding anniversary trip and your article has sealed the deal. The romantic proposal experience at the Vault Bar, with the ring hidden in one of the numbered safes, is the most creative engagement concept I have ever encountered. But even beyond that, the combination of the canal view suite, the Guerlain Spa, the Spectrum restaurant with two Michelin stars, and the private garden for events makes this an ideal property for a special celebration. The fact that the hotel has received a five-star Forbes Travel… Read more »

Read more »

Hi Marko, thoroughly enjoyed this review. What I find most impressive about the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam is how it has managed to preserve the individual identity of each of the six palaces while creating a cohesive hotel experience. The fact that each palace retained its original name, whether De Wilt, Kemp, Hoft, Sauteijn, Becker or Brentano, shows a deep respect for the heritage of the property. I visited Amsterdam in March last year and stayed at the Hotel Seven One Seven on Prinsengracht, a beautiful townhouse hotel, but much smaller and without the facilities that the Waldorf Astoria offers. The… Read more »

Read more »

Hello Marko, exceptional review. As a Scotch whisky enthusiast, I was immediately drawn to your mention of rare Scotch whiskeys at the Vault Bar. The setting of a former bank vault creates the perfect atmosphere for savouring a fine dram. The fact that the Vault Bar also serves carefully prepared avant-garde cocktails suggests a bar programme that caters to both classic and contemporary tastes. I stayed at the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam for one night during a business trip about eighteen months ago and can confirm that the bar lives up to its reputation. The bartenders were knowledgeable and the atmosphere… Read more »

Marko, I really appreciated your thorough coverage of both the hotel and the surrounding Amsterdam December experience. The suggestion about Café Hoppe being declared a national monument and Café Chris where Rembrandt supposedly sat are exactly the kind of authentic local recommendations that elevate a travel blog from good to essential reading. I have been to Amsterdam six or seven times and never knew about the Café Chris connection to Rembrandt. Your observation about the Utrechtsestraat being full of great restaurants and cafes within walking distance of the hotel is also very helpful for guests who want to explore beyond… Read more »

Ciao Marko, recensione davvero eccellente. Read more »

Hello Marko, what an absorbing review. The MOCO Museum mention alongside the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum was a pleasant surprise. The idea of seeing works by Warhol, Banksy and Haring as a contrast to the Dutch masters from the neighbouring museums is a brilliant way to spend a day on Museumplein. I visited the MOCO during my last Amsterdam trip and found it to be a refreshing counterpoint to the traditional museums. Your hotel review is equally well balanced, covering everything from the historical significance and architectural details to the practical amenities like espresso machines and laptop-sized safes. Read more »

Marko, lovely review. As a woman who travels frequently on her own, I particularly appreciated the security-related details like the electronic safe large enough for a laptop and the twenty-four-hour reception. But what truly appeals to me about the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam is the Guerlain Spa. Having access to a world-class spa with exclusive treatments after a day of exploring the winter canals sounds like the perfect way to unwind. The indoor swimming pool with its discreet fountain and subdued lighting seems ideal for a quiet morning swim before heading out to the museums. I stayed at the Hotel Pulitzer… Read more »

Read more »

Marko, fantastic review as always. I wanted to highlight something you touched on that I think deserves emphasis, which is the hotel’s location in the context of Amsterdam’s walkability. Being on the Herengracht at numbers 542 to 556 puts you in the absolute heart of the canal ring, within easy walking distance of virtually everything that matters. The Rijksmuseum is about fifteen minutes on foot, Dam Square perhaps ten, and the Jordaan neighbourhood even less. For a luxury hotel, this kind of central location without being on a noisy commercial street is the ideal combination. I have stayed at many… Read more »

Bonjour Marko, quelle merveilleuse revue. Read more »

Hello Marko, this has to be one of the finest hotel reviews I have read in a very long time. What sets your writing apart is that you do not simply describe the amenities but place them within a rich historical and cultural context that makes every detail more meaningful. The fact that the Herengracht was built during the Dutch Golden Age by the wealthiest merchants in the world, and that six of their palaces now form a single hotel where you can sleep in rooms that once hosted Russian emperors and Dutch kings, is an extraordinary proposition. I have… Read more »
