My dear fashionistas, welcome to another fashion adventure on the Mr.M blog! There are destinations that do not require too much description, they speak for themselves. Zhujiajiao, an ancient city on the water near Shanghai, is just one such destination. When I stepped on the stone paths of this unusual water city, surrounded by canals that spread like a blue net through architecture that remembers over 1,700 years of history, I realized that nothing needs to be changed here. The authenticity of the space requires authenticity in your approach and in what you wear.
CIFONELLI: THE PARISIAN HERITAGE OF ITALIAN ELEGANCE
When I talk about the tobacco-colored Cifonelli cotton-knit T-shirt I wore that day, I’m not just talking about one piece of clothing. I’m talking about a legacy that goes back to 1880, when Giuseppe Cifonelli, originally from Abruzzo, Italy, founded his atelier in Paris. His vision was clear to combine Italian tailoring tradition with French refined elegance.
Today, the Cifonelli house represents one of the last bastions of authentic artisan tailoring in the world. Their atelier at 31 Rue Marbeuf in the 8th arrondissement of Paris still operates according to the same principles laid down by the founder more than a century ago. Every piece of clothing, from suits to t-shirts, passes through the hands of masters who acquired their knowledge during a ten-year apprenticeship.
The T-shirt I chose for walking through Zhujiajiao perfectly reflects the brand’s philosophy. Crafted from an exceptionally dense cotton knit, this tobacco-colored t-shirt carries with it all the discreet luxury that defines the Cifonelli approach.
Why is tobacco color the best choice for the modern man? This shade represents the perfect bridge between warmth and freshness, between casual fashion relaxation and elegance. In the context of the ancient Zhujiajiao Water Village, where water, stone and centuries-old tradition meet, this color becomes part of the natural palette that surrounds visitors to this extraordinary place.
CAMEL PANTS AS PROOF OF THE CIFONELLI TRADITION
The camel pants that I combined with the shirt also come from the Cifonelli collection. Another dimension of this Parisian house is revealed here, their ability to create pieces that rely on timeless elegant and sophisticated silhouettes, but with a modern application.
Cifonelli pants are made according to the principle that the brand has been applying for more than a century. Their tailoring system, known as the “Cifonelli cut”, is based on a specific way of shaping the shoulder part of the jacket, but the same principles of attention are paid to every piece that leaves their atelier. In trousers, this means the perfect balance between structure and comfort.
Camel color represents one of the noblest shades in men’s wardrobe. Historically speaking, this color comes from the wool of the camel, which was used for centuries as a material for making clothes in colder regions. Today, the camel color symbolizes discreet elegance and the ability to fit into almost any context, from business to completely casual.
In Zhujiajiao, where the dominant colors are gray, white and green, the camel shade of the pants creates a warm contrast that does not disturb the harmony of the space but complements it. When I walked on the stone slabs, I saw how the color of the pants perfectly matched the earthy tones that make up the foundation of this ancient settlement.
ROMAGO SUPER CARBON X: SWISS PRECISION ON MY WRIST
On my wrist was a watch that represents a modern approach to watchmaking: the Romago Super Carbon X. Romago is a Swiss brand that has been creating watches for three decades that combine traditional Swiss craftsmanship with contemporary design solutions.
Founded in Geneva, Romago has positioned itself as a brand that respects the heritage of the Swiss watchmaking industry, but is not bound by its conventions. The Super Carbon X model perfectly illustrates this philosophy. The carbon fiber case isn’t just trendsetting, it’s a material that’s five times lighter than steel, yet stronger, making it ideal for an active lifestyle.
OUTFIT
T-Shirt: Cifonelli
Watch: ROMAGO Swiss
Trousers: Cifonelli
Loafers: Carlos Santos
The square shape of the dial, which deviates decisively from the classic round Swiss watches, speaks of the brand’s courage to experiment. In the context of my outfit, this watch was the only piece that had a distinctly modern design, thus creating an interesting contrast between timeless pieces of clothing and a contemporary approach to functionality.
The Swiss watchmaking tradition dates back to the sixteenth century, when Calvinist restrictions on the wearing of jewelry forced goldsmiths to turn their skills to watchmaking. Romago continues this tradition, but adapts it to the needs of the 21st century, which is exactly what today’s world demands.
CARLOS SANTOS SHOES: THE PORTUGUESE MIRACLE OF FOOTWEAR
The fringed moccasins I’m wearing come from Portugal’s Carlos Santos workshop, a brand that has become synonymous with handmade flip-flop suede footwear. The Whindersson 1989 model in brown is the perfect ending to today’s fashion story that I wanted to share with you.
Portugal has a rich tradition of shoe manufacturing that goes back centuries. The region around Porto, where most of Portugal’s shoemaking workshops are located, has become known for quality craftsmanship that rivals Italian brands, but at more affordable prices. Santos Shoes continues this tradition, using only natural leather and hand sewing methods that guarantee durability.
Suede leather represents a special challenge in the world of quality footwear. Unlike smooth leather, suede requires specific processing techniques and is much more sensitive to external influences. However, when properly made and maintained, suede shoes have a unique texture and warmth that is unattainable with other materials.
Fringe moccasins are a classic that originates from the traditional footwear of the North American Indians, but over the centuries they have evolved into a symbol of relaxed elegance. Santos’ interpretation of this classic model retains all the elements that make moccasins distinctive, hand-stitched construction, flexible lining, soft tassels, while adding a Portuguese attention to detail.
As I walked on the uneven cobblestones of the Zhujiajiao Water Village, I appreciated the decision to wear these shoes. The flexible base and soft tumbled suede leather provided comfort that solid leather could not provide, and the brown color created a natural connection with the earth tones that dominate this ancient settlement.
WHY IS ZHUJIAJIAO CALLED THE VENICE OF SHANGHAI?
Zhujiajiao is not just a backdrop for a fashion story, it is a place that tells stories in itself. This city on the water, located about thirty kilometers from downtown Shanghai, dates back to the Three Kingdoms period more than 1,700 years ago. The name Zhujiajiao literally means “corner of the Zhu family”, that is, the place where the Zhu River splits.
During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Zhujiajiao was an important trading center due to its strategic position on the river. Thirty-six ancient bridges, the most famous of which is the Fangsheng Bridge from 1571, connect parts of the city and create a unique architectural entity that has survived the centuries.
Walking through the narrow streets, surrounded by canals where traditional boats are still used, I felt time becoming a relative term. White walls with red window frames, ancient roof structures with characteristic curved lines, stone paths polished for thousands of feet, all this creates an atmosphere where past and present do not exist as separate categories.
In this context, my choice of outfit is an act of respect for this place. I didn’t want to be a tourist who stood out, I wanted to blend in with the ambiance, for my wardrobe to resonate with the moderation and elegance that this place carries within itself.
FASHION PHILOSOPHY WHEN LESS REALLY MEANS MORE
The basis of this outfit lies in the principle advocated by all eminent fashion houses, simplicity is the pinnacle of sophistication, it is an unwritten golden rule of fashion. The watch is the only element that introduces a different dimension, but that’s my decision because I wanted some touch of modern design combined with the classics.
Textures play a key role in this story. A cotton knit T-shirt, flipped leather on moccasins, each of these surfaces brings its own story, its own way of reflecting light, its own feeling to the touch. In a monochrome scheme like this, the textures become what separates a boring outfit from an interesting one.
The fit of the pieces was the key to success. The Cifonelli T-shirt is elegant enough to pair with tailored trousers, but relaxed enough not to feel too formal for a day stroll through the old town. The pants have a classic silhouette that can be worn with shirts and jackets as well as t-shirts which I did in my case, making them an investment that will last for years. Fringe loafers are the definition of relaxed elegance, elegant enough for a night out but casual enough for daytime activities and business meetings.
IS MAINTAINING QUALITY PIECES AN INVESTMENT IN DURABILITY?
Owning a piece of this high quality brings with it the responsibility of proper maintenance. The Cifonelli T-shirt made of cotton knitwear requires careful washing at lower temperatures and avoiding machine drying. The structure of knitwear can be damaged by aggressive washing, so it is better to invest extra time in proper maintenance than to risk a shorter life of the piece.
I regularly brush my wool pants with a soft brush after wearing them, which removes surface dust and refreshes the fibers. I limit professional dry cleaning to a minimum, because any such treatment thins the fabric to some extent. Instead, I often air them out in the open, which naturally refreshes the material.
Flip-flop suede moccasins require special attention. After each use, I brush them with a special suede leather brush to lift the fibers and remove surface dirt. I use protective sprays specifically designed for tumbled suede leather, which create an invisible barrier against water and stains without changing the texture of the material. I insert molds into all my shoes immediately after removing the moccasins, which helps them keep their shape for years.
IS STYLE LIKE A JOURNEY WITHOUT A DESTINATION?
As I stood on the banks of a canal in Zhujiajiao, watching the ancient architecture reflected in the still water, I realized that style is not something that is achieved, it is something that is lived. Every piece I wore that day wasn’t just a decision about my outfit that day, it was a certain expression of the values I carry with me wherever I go.
The Cifonelli T-shirt and trousers represent respect for craftsmanship and tradition. Carlos Santos moccasins speak to the understanding that quality does not always have to come from the most famous fashion capitals. The Romago watch symbolizes the acceptance of the modern without renouncing the value of tradition.
Zhujiajiao was the perfect place for this story because, just like my outfit, it represents the harmony between past and present. Here, centuries do not stand against each other, they simply coexist, creating something that transcends time.
When choosing what to wear, don’t just choose clothes, choose the story you want to tell. Select the values you want to transfer. Don’t forget the most important thing, to choose pieces that will accompany you through the years, that will create numerous memories with you and become part of your personal heritage.
Because at the end of the day, true elegance is not about being noticed, true elegance lies in being remembered.

This post is sponsored by Cifonelli, ROMAGO Swiss, Carlos Santos brands. This post represents my personal and honest review of the destination, services and products provided.

Hello Marko, what a beautiful combination of fashion and travel storytelling! The tobacco-colored Cifonelli T-shirt against the ancient water town backdrop is truly stunning. I’ve been a Cifonelli customer for several years now, mostly for their suits, but this post has convinced me to explore their casual pieces as well. The fact that they’ve maintained the same principles since Giuseppe Cifonelli founded the atelier in 1880 is remarkable in today’s fast fashion world.
Fantastischer Beitrag, Marko!
Hi Marko, I have a question about the Cifonelli cotton knit T-shirt. You mentioned it requires careful washing at lower temperatures. What specific temperature would you recommend, and do you hand wash it or use a gentle machine cycle? I’m considering investing in one but want to make sure I can properly maintain it. The tobacco color looks incredibly versatile and sophisticated.
Ciao Marko!
Marko, your point about textures being key in a monochrome outfit really resonated with me. The cotton knit of the T-shirt combined with the suede leather of the moccasins creates visual interest without relying on contrasting colors. I’ve been wearing Cifonelli pieces for years and their attention to detail is unmatched. The camel trousers look like they have that perfect balance between structure and comfort you described.
Hola Marko!
This post perfectly captures why Cifonelli remains one of the most respected names in tailoring. I own several of their pieces and the craftsmanship is simply outstanding. Your description of their “Cifonelli cut” and how they apply the same attention to detail to every piece, including trousers, explains why their garments feel so different from mass-produced clothing. Zhujiajiao looks like an incredible destination as well.
Marko, I appreciate the depth of research you put into these posts. Learning that Zhujiajiao literally means “corner of the Zhu family” and dates back to the Three Kingdoms period adds so much context to the photographs. Your outfit choice of earth tones shows real understanding of how to dress appropriately for a location while maintaining personal style. The Carlos Santos loafers look incredibly comfortable for walking on those ancient cobblestones.
Bellissimo post, Marko!
